Listener Feedback / Audio Clips

Lyria looking for a sidebar plugin to subscribe to future posts and not use feedburner.

-You may want to check out Newsletter, a plugin that we’ve previously discussed on the show. (https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/newsletter/) It allows you to do both single and double opt-in newsletter subscriptions without the need of a third party service. It also handles unsubscribe requests automatically.

-Additionally there’s a plugin called “Easy Automatic Newsletter Lite” (https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/easy-automatic-newsletter/) that has many of the same functionality points and has added benefits of controlling the frequency in which new posts go out in newsletter form.

Andrew McGivern with some great show feedback and wants to know of a plugin to sync comments from one site to another..

-This is a tough one Andrew, as you would have to share the same SQL user table between two installations, not to mention the fact that you would have duplicate content on two different sites, possibly negating any positive gains that this functionality would give you. You bring up an interesting point in using Facebook, in which you could use Alex King’s new SOCIAL plugin (https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/social/) to act as a conduit for cross-pollinating your comments between WP and Facebook and Twitter.

Another suggestion is to try the premium plugin “WP-ROBOT” (https://marcuscouch.com/wprobot) as a way to grab both posts and comments and post to another WP installation, though it may not have the ability to continually monitor each post individually and update them one by one. Version 4 of WP Robot was just released with a ton of new features, but Marcus has not yet had the opportunity to review it in full to test it’s full capabilities and limitations.

You may want to try the FaceBook SEO plugin for comments and palce it on both sites with same app code. It was reviewed back a few episodes by me. https://www.johnoverall.com/retina-display-task-management-content-comments-and-more-on-episode-75-wordpress-plugins-a-to-z/

https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/seo-facebook-comments/

David from Perth, Australia has a new podcasting project using WordPress and is looking for a solution to facilitate a directory that podcasters can use to submit their own podcast information.

-Marcus suggests using DirectoryPress theme, which you can buy at https://marcuscouch.com/directorypress. (This is an affiliate link that helps to support your hosts)
The theme features both free and paid options for adding entries into the directory, robust child themes, payment gateways and plenty of methods in which to import mass content from CSV or other means. I love using these premiumpress themes not only for their functionality and free lifetime upgrades, but also for the amazing community and support forums that go along with it.

This should add a box to the post/page edit area not o the Dashboard for your admin. So let me ask a quick question how many people actually spend much time on the dashboard page and do any work there aside from look at stats?

WP – Social Stats

https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wpsocialstats/

Wpsocialstats is a social analytics tool that tracks the performance of your site at Facebook, Twitter, Google+, Pinterest, LinkedIn and Stumbleupon.

Requires: 2.6 or higher
Compatible up to: 3.4.2
Last Updated: 2012-10-3
Downloads: 561
WP Social Stats is a social analytics plugin that tracks the performance of your blog or website posts on social networks. People love to share great content with their friends on social networks, but do you know which network is the most popular for your blog/website or what type of blog posts are shared the most? WPSocialstats helps you answer these questions so you focus on creating great content, the key to success for any blog or website.

With WP Social Stats you can:

  • Track number of times a post is shared on Facebook, Twitter, Google+ , Pinterest, LinkedIn and Stumbleupon
  • Data is presented in a table view, easy to read and analyze
  • Sort results per category or tag and see which type of posts are performing the best
  • Sort results per month
  • Track performance of your blog or website pages as well

Marcus’ Take:
While there are numerous ways to add and propagate social likes and tweets, there is often a large gap in how to associate that data within WordPress itself from a statistical standpoint. This plugin bridges the gap, allowing you to see sharing statistics for your posts directly in the WordPress dashboard. I found this to be a great improvement in determining what posts “go viral” and also identifying what users are sharing your post content online.

Safe Mode

https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/safe-mode

Makes it possible to enable safe mode for WordPress. In safe mode, plugins will not be loaded and the default theme (if installed) will be activated.

Requires: 3.0.1 or higher
Compatible up to: 3.4.2
Last Updated: 2012-10-19
Downloads: 73

This plugin enables safe mode for WordPress. This means:

  • No plugins will be loaded.
  • A default theme will be temporarily activated (if it is installed).

Why is this useful?

Whenever something’s wrong with a WordPress site, the first rule of thumb is to disable plugins and possibly revert to the default theme. Depending on the nature of the error, that is not always an option. The back end (dashboard) may also be down, you may not have FTP access to manually disable plugins or themes and so on.

Enter Safe Mode. Safe Mode will completely disable all plugins and the active theme temporarily for a single page view – ultimately enabling you to log in and remove the offending plugin. (This is not guaranteed to work in all scenarios, please read the disclaimer)

How does it work?

If your site crashes due to an upsetting plugin or theme, all you have to do is add a querystring parameter to the URL. That will temporarily disable all plugins for that single page view, as well as temporarily activate a default theme if such is installed.
Let’s say you’re the owner of https://www.example.com. To enable safe mode for one particular page, you add this to the URL: “?safe_mode=1”.
Bear in mind that you have to do this for every view. The querystring parameter isn’t carried on automatically. So, for instance:

When you go to plugin management, all plugins will seem to be deactivated (due to the way Safe Mode works), but you’ll still be able to explicitly deactivate each plugin. Just use the “Deactivate (safe mode)” option.

What is default themes?

By default theme, I’m referring to either Twenty Twelve, Twenty Eleven or Twenty Ten.
The plugin checks if any of these themes are installed (in that order), and if so, activates the first theme it encounters. Thus I highly recommend that you keep one of those themes installed at all times. If you don’t, safe mode will keep your current active theme, and that theme may just be the offender – leaving safe mode useless. Keep this in mind.

Marcus’ Take: There are many times in which a plugin can interact negatively. These can include WordPress core version updates, plugin updates, theme updates or any other scenario in which the code changes over time. When this happens, there is often a conflict which can literally stop a site in it’s tracks. This plugin helps to keep your site in “safe mode” with a simple trailing string on your URL, which lets you get to the root of the problem without having your site completely dead. It’s an easy way to get the site back up again if problems ever come up that seem to be out of your control.

EasyGram

https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/easygram/
A WordPress plugin that allows you to create amazing blog posts or galleries for your WordPress website that include your Instagram photos.

Requires: 3.3 or higher
Compatible up to: 3.4.2
Last Updated: 2012-10-26
Downloads: 387

Simply install the plugin on your WordPress site, activate and authorize your account connection to Instagram and then start importing your photos and creating galleries.

Where can I use it?
Easygram can be used with any WordPress install. As long as you have a site and as long as you have WordPress then Easygram will work for you.
Auto-import all your Instagram photos
With the above setup done, you can simply start creating your galleries using Easygram’s auto-import feature. Click the Instagram tab and you’ll be able to see your Instagram photos which you’ve taken.
Select Multiple Photos at a Time
Select multiple photos and include as many as you like in your galleries.

Marcus’ Take: This is an outstanding bridge built to let you access your mobile photos directly in your WordPress Media Gallery. It adds an “Instagram” section of your Media Gallery, allowing you to use the images in your post with just a few clicks.

Marcus’ Take: In my ever nearing quest for a cool site for my new video show, I needed to have a way to get a slider like feel but be automated so I did not have to regularly update all the time (as it’s a daily show). This plugin is a perfect solution for getting the best of both worlds. The video opens up in a lightbox format, which gives the viewer instant, 1 click access to viewing the video content.

Minimum Word Count

https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/minimum-word-count/

Requires: 3.0 or higher
Compatible up to: 3.4.2
Last Updated: 2012-10-1
Downloads: 48

This plugin allows you to set a minimum word count required to publish a post. You have the option to exempt administrators from this requirement. As part of this plugin, a “Word Count” column is added to the post listing pages. Also, on the post editing pages, the “Word Count” field just below the content box is now changed to “Live Word Count” and updated as you type. If the current post is below the minimum word count setting, the count will turn red.

Features

  • Require a minimum word count to publish a post
  • Option to allow administrators to publish below the minimum
  • Adds a Word Count column to post listing pages
  • Changes ‘Word Count’ to ‘Live Word Count’ on post edit pages

Marcus’ Take:
This is a great tool for SEO and content, as it sets the word count at whatever minimum you choose. I also used this on a client site to prevent the writer from “accidentally posting” their drafts or scratchpads of just a few lines of text. It happens. This plugin helps make sure that everything that goes out is of a good content length.

Marcus Rants:

500 Errors

I was working on a client site and happened to be doing something that I haven’t yet had to do.. Create a new category. I decided to try this addition “in-post” and save some time. A second after I created the category, the whole site went to a 500 error. I refreshed.. Same thing. Switch browsers.. NOTHING. When times like this hit you as a designer or webmaster, its important to remember one important thing. DON’T PANIC! Sometimes WordPress is sensitive, like that old lamp you used to own with the electrical cord that had to be twisted in just the right way in order to get juice. But in this case, it’s a cord for every plugin you have installed!

So when this happens to you, work backwards and work from the root level. Head to your WordPress install via FTP. Rename your plugins folder to plugins-temp. See if that fixes it (it will trick WordPress and remove all active running plugins). If not, rename your .htaccess file (if you have one) to .htaccess-temp and then refresh after 10-15 seconds. Did that fix it? Great! Now rename your plugin folder back to just plain “plugins” and refresh. Still working? OK, then it’s something to do with a particular plugin interacting with your htaccess file.

In my case, this was a redirection plugin. There were existing 301 redirects in the .htaccess as well as a plugin in WordPress trying to 301 the same pages.

So in a nutshell.. 500 error.. reset your htaccess and rename your plugin folder. It’s a good first step to getting to the bottom of a problem.

Bulk Move 0.9

The Lowdown:
I needed a simple way to bulk move lots of posts from an older category to a newer one. The plugin turned out to be a very nice way to bulk move posts to a new category. As a warning once you move them there is no easy way to move them back so make sure you want to move them.

DM Albums 3.1.6

The Lowdown:
I needed a simple but nice looking photo album aside from the built in for wordpress. I needed something easy to use modify and displays nicely. This plugin does the trick. Creating albums is done in your posts page area, you manage them there also. it auto sizes to your display page and is nicely responsive for mobile devices. it places the picture in the center with a film strip along the bottom so navigation to other images is simple and when clicked it opens in a centered window filling the screen again with filmstrip navigation. All in all very nice here. I did run into one issue though and that was a problem with filmstrip appearing in Firefox browser and it simply required a fix to the CSS but it did take me a few to find the issue so dropped a point for extra work.

Developer Mode

https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/developer-mode/

Requires: 3.0 or higher
Compatible up to: 3.4.2
Last Updated: 2012-9-16
Downloads: 78

If you develop WordPress websites for your clients, this is the plugin for you! Developer Mode makes it possible to easily disable certain parts of the admin panel for your clients, while keeping full control over all admin panel functionality for yourself and other developers. For example, you can hide certain menu items for non-developer users and even hide certain plugins from the plugins overview page.

The Developer Mode plugin allows your clients to be presented with a clean WordPress admin interface with only the functionality they need – and nothing more. You don’t want to allow your clients to fiddle with plugins, but you probably don’t want them to mess with your Advanced Custom Fields or Option Tree settings either. Let Developer Mode do the dirty work for you, and clean up your client’s admin interface with just a few mouse clicks!

Marcus’ Take: Let’s face it: a big part of the WordPress admin panel is not suited for your clients. Some of your clients might not know enough about WordPress to have as many options as you as a developer need, and some parts of your website are just not meant to be tampered with by them. This is where the Developer Mode plugin steps in: it allows you to disable certain parts of the admin functionality in the admin panel, such as updating plugins, viewing menu items and disabling specific plugins.

Show a Vimeo video and a gallery of thumbnails for a Vimeo user channel. Vimeo Channel Gallery is a fork of YouTube Channel Gallery.

Features:

  • Display latest thumbnail videos from Vimeo user channel.
  • When you click on one of the thumbnails the video plays at the top.
  • This plugin uses the Vimeo IFrame player API that allows Vimeo to serve an HTML5 player rather than a Flash player for mobile devices that do not support Flash.
  • You can choose to use this plugin as a widget or as a shortcode.
  • You can use multiple instances of the plugin on the same page.

Marcus’ Take: Naturally I’ve been looking for ways to propagate my new video project across multiple networks. Vimeo is a great network that is getting a lot of traction for high quality video hosting. This plugin has tested nicely thus far and might be the winner over youtube as my platform of choice. This plugin provided a lot of different options and could be a great addition to a client site that requires a lot of video elements to be presented without having to constantly embed new posts manually. The automation was fast and effective.

Marcus’ Take: Though devoid of a proper description in the repository, this plugin will take the RSS feed from other sources and sites and post them as a draft on your wordpress installation. As a draft, you have the opportunity to edit and rewrite the posts as you see fit. I am using this to feed in WordPress related news to my new plugin site from about 20 different sources. After a healthy setup process, it worked like a charm. Even assigning custom post types and tags to specific feeds that I had indicated as such.

Tweet My Post 1.7.21

The Lowdown:
So my usual standby plugin for sending tweets has been discontinued and I had to find a new one and this is it. While this plugin does require you to create a twitter app that is not too difficult a task. Once installed and you have your app ready it produces a nice extra box in your post creation area that allows you to check out what is about to be tweeted. this may very well become my new standard.. Although not automatic like I would like it is close since it is right there in your posts window. Unfortunately I do not get to use this on my site but will on others seems I am running something that conflicts with it.. When on it kills almost all my jquery and java not sure why am probably sure it is me since I run so much stuff. eventually I will solve and will report when i do.  So what do I what I always do find another one

WP Tweet Button 2.1.3

The Lowdown:
This one provides several options for the tweet and the ability to add a tweet this button with customizations on a per post basis. It was actually working with my mess of plugins so away I went. I also discovered that it will work on automation as well as allow you to make custom changes to the tweet going out as well as placing the Twitter user name as a referral that someone might want to follow if they tweet it out.

Open, Web Analytics
https://www.openwebanalytics.com/

The Lowdown:
Since I have jumped so high on what I am trying to do now I thought it would be nice to track where my visitors are going on my site and follow their path live. So I went looking for something better than what I was using for tracking. This is the closest I have come so far. It track’s just about everything.. It is an opensource project that is cross platform and since of course WordPress is somewhat popular they have created it as a plugin for wordpress. Simply make sure you download the WordPress plugin version and then upload it to your site like any other plugin turn it on and go. It has a live view function and you can see where people are going where they went and how long they spent on each page. The Idea of course I am working on directing folks though my site with better visual clues. and I think this will help.

One click solution for make your blog/website empty. Delete all your posts, pages, media(images, videos, etc) , tags and categories.

Marcus’ Take: For me, I always set up dummy content to my stage sites as a placeholder. Once the site is complete and it’s time to migrate, it’s always a chore to have to manually delete everything. This is a great one to use to make all your site content go away with one click. A true time saver.

Static Pages

https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/static-pages/

Requires: 3.2 or higher
Compatible up to: 3.5
Last Updated: 2012-8-11
Downloads: 193

Automatically wrap a WordPress Theme around a static HTML page. Add the look and feel of WordPress to legacy HTML files.

The Static Pages plugin takes any existing html file and wraps it with a WordPress theme. Legacy html files can take advantage of all of the WordPress features such as sidebars, widgets and shortcodes.
The plugin works only with HTML type files with the extension of .htm, .html, or .shtml. It extracts the title of the page, the content and any javascript in the header and throws away the rest. It then creates a fake post which it displays in the currently active theme. The legacy web page will appear as a WordPress page using the theme formatting with the theme headers, sidebars and footers.

After installing the plugin it is necessary to alter or add an .htaccess file to the area in your site where the static pages reside. The plugin generates the correct .htaccess directives and you can find them on the plugin’s settings page. You can add the lines to the WordPress generated .htaccess after the WordPress section.

The plugin leaves all of the original file’s BODY intact. If the original static page contained headings, menus, sidebars, etc, they will remain and be wrapped in the WordPress theme. Server Side includes (SSI) will, however, be ignored by PHP.

Marcus’ Take: I used this plugin to wrap an older client site page into WordPress. The client page was an aspx gateway form html page. Rather than trying to reinvent the wheel and re-encode this into WordPress, I used this plugin instead. It worked great

Compatible up to: 3.4.1

Post Word Count adds a sortable column to the admin’s post manager, displaying the word count for each post.

Marcus’ Take: We often create new drafts in WordPress every time we get an idea to blog. The problem is that there is no easy way to see which drafts you’ve already started working on. This plugin allows the functionality to sort all of your posts, including drafts, by the post’s word count. This should be a part of the next WP Core upgrade. Why have we not had this all along?

WordPressfor iOS just got a big update as promised at Wordcamp San Francisco last week. It is a big improvement over the old app, with more of a twitter or Facebook app feel to it now with swiping the different sections of editing capabilities. I am a bit dismayed at the lack of a true WYSIWYG interface, reverting to HTML as the default. Still, it is a big lift from where the App was previously.

I have my review of it here https://www.johnoverall.com/the-new-wordpress-ios-app/

Insights 1.0.5

The Lowdown:
You know sometimes the old is still pretty good..
While some of the functionality of this plugin is provided in the WordPress core when you wish to add a link to a post not all of what this plugin does is available.
This plugin provides a great easy way to find links within your site as well as off site links to places such as Wikipedia. just a keyword or two and you’re on your way. This is a simple plugin that you just install it adds a new window to your post dashboard and all you do is choose a keyword or two and choose where to find info your blog, images, videos, Wikipedia, Google, news, blogs or books. then it is just a click away to add the link.

WordPress Post Tabs 1.3.1

The Lowdown:
Ok here’s the deal I was converting over a website that was done in old html and php on some proprietary system and they had the one page that used something like tabs. So I thought I would see how that could be done in WordPress. I found this plugin to be a great way of adding tabs to the site it was simple with just a short code to wrap the content into and then a little css to make the header look the way I wanted it to and it worked pretty smooth.

The Lowdown:
Ok here is the deal I have a project I am working on which is deploying a MU platform and they wanted to have multiple blogs but they all need to conform to the master one. So I needed a simple way to duplicate the master blog and of course I do what i always do and that is find a great plugin to solve the problem. This plugin is great for duplicating just about everything and a couple of unique settings but it was missing the one main thing I wanted and that was the ability to duplicate the main site menu since it will be shared across all 30 sub blogs I did not want to manually create it that many times. All in all pretty great though.. Although I have found a premium plugin that might do the task I will let you know about it as soon as I install and test it.

This is the plugin for making changes to your themes. Edit any WordPress theme from the front of your website. Just click on a part of your website to edit it. Then save different versions of your themes as child themes.

Marcus’ Take:  This is a very interesting plugin that can be toggled off and on with the admin bar. When enabled, you can hover over different sections and components of your site and literally click to edit the CSS of that particular section. It lets you save different versions in case you screw something up or just want to run an A/B test. The issue I had was it didn’t always save with the changes I wanted every time. Pretty frustrating when you are in deep thought editing CSS and  you have to recreate that design ZEN all over again and try and remember what you just did. Looking forward to this being updated to have more horsepower or an alternate front-end CSS editing plugin.

E-mails the site owner if anyone reaches or attempts to login to the site. Also shows the user names they attempt to login with.

This is a Security focused plug-in, which will send an email to the Administrator of the WordPress site each time login page is reached.

If someone attempts to login, it will also send the user name they tried logging in with, as well as their IP address, User-Agent, Timestamp, and the Referral URL.

If you see multiple attempts to login at times you are not logged on to the site, this means someone is attempting to brute force their way into your site, and you should ban the offending IP address from your site. Especially if they are trying multiple names, or sending them rapidly, one after another.

Marcus’ Take: This is a great feature to check and see if there are hooligans trying to get in your site. Nice that it tells you the name they try and use as well.

Just some thoughts about never say never… I just relaunched my website with a cleaner easier to use interface and have added in a new email campaign system in the past I always opposed the off site mailing list providers mainly because I would lose a lot of control but I was recently brought back to a plugin I reviewed several episodes back and then sort of forgot about. So a quick shout to the guys at beAutomated Sean and Randy.. I was just about to go live with my site a couple of days ago and was listening to the podcast Your Website Engineer and catching up on episodes and happened to listen to one where he discussed with Sean and Randy about their plugin and it reminded me of all that it can do so I quickly revisited it and became a believer.. In my larger quest to get a cleaner looking site on one that was using allot of categories for navigation of a custom menu I needed a way to make it look cleaner. I found this to work pretty nice and look very clean into the theme. Expansion very clean and it allows you to exclude categories and also specific posts. It looks like to can also use it for posts and pages include your own images and customize it in many ways.. You can also have specific categories auto expand, you can also set it to close any other open group when you open a new one. You can also exclude posts from showing based on age.

I liked it but that theme was not what I wanted for my new site look. So I cam across this plugin which allows you to use that great generat box on any Genesis theme and to place the box in places the original theme did not have without any coding. Plus this plugin make customizing the look and feel of the box simpler without the need for allot of CSS changes. SEO friendly plugin that automatically parses links in content and forces a new window to be opened for external links.

WP Links is a SEO friendly external link handler to help with your on page SEO and increases your visitors time on site.
One of the ways you can increase your search engine ranking is by increasing the time a user spends browsing your website.
This plugin is intended to increase the time a user spends on your page by assisting you in HTML markup.
WP Links will scan your page for any external links and force links to open in a new tab.

Marcus’ Take: The plugin simply parses all links on your page on output and adds target=”_blank” to the anchor tag. Does the trick nicely and makes all external links open in a new window. Would be nice to have more options.

Adds shortcodes to easily create columns in your posts or pages.

Sometimes you just need to divide your page into different columns. With this plugin you just select a column shortcode and it will add the column to the page.

There are 9 different column widths available from which you can make all combinations:

  • half (1/2)
  • one third (1/3)
  • two third (2/3)
  • one fourth (1/4)
  • three fourth (3/4)
  • one fifth (1/5)
  • two fifth (2/5)
  • three fifth (3/5)
  • one sixth (1/6)

A preset stylesheet is included, which you can also overwrite to you liking in your theme’s stylesheet.

Marcus’ Take: This is a neat plugin that gives more column options than I’ve ever seen in any other column plugin. Great for that newspaper styling to your WordPress installation.

Gravity Forms RSS Add-On

Output Gravity Forms entries as an RSS feed on a per-form basis

Requires: 2.8 or higher
Compatible up to: 3.4.1
Last Updated: 2012-7-31

View all your Gravity Forms entries as an RSS feed

Generate RSS feeds for each Gravity Form form.

  • Go to Edit Forms
  • Click on Form Settings
  • Click on the Advanced tab
  • At the bottom of the Advanced tab, you will see a link “Go to RSS feed” – that’s the link!

You must save the form before the RSS feed will work

There’s some security, too.

In order to view the RSS feed, users will need to have the correct token (a kind of password). Without the correct token, the RSS feed will not work.

Marcus’ Take: Another great reason to use Gravity Forms. I really like the security aspect of this as well, making sure I have a token for security reasons. I actually tested this in Google Reader and it worked great.

ZigWidgetClass 0.3.2

The Lowdown:
Ok what I needed here was a specific instance of a text widget to get a css class without a lot of fuss, so after a quick search I found this plugin. This plugin worked out great and simple it was just a matter of adding the text widget and adding the class to the widget and then adjusting the class to what I wanted.

Pretty Link

The Lowdown:

What was happening here was I needed a way to track an off site URL that would get me some decent stats. So after looking around I came upon this plugin. I downloaded the free lite version and it worked out pretty nice although I had discovered it off the authors site or so it seems not sure so I asked.. I was not aware there was a pro version until after it was installed again as usual I have nothing against pro versions of plugins in fact I buy many of them. But I dislike it when it is not upfront that what they are describing in their post is a premium version and 3/4 of the plugin does not work until paid for. … So in its limited fashion it is pretty good probably better as pro but I am not purchasing it to track one link. I never did get a response from the developer…

Rating: 3 Dragons dropped to 2 for not being upfront.

upPrev Previous Post Animated Notification 1.4.0

The Lowdown:

This plugins I stumbled upon while looking for something else. What does it do well have you noticed those little boxes that load in the lower right hand corner showing another post on the site. Sort of like if you read the NY Times site and you see additional story box pop up. That is what this plugin does. You can set it to make the box appear after scrolling down the page from 0% to 100% although it is usually best to set it at about 75 to 90%. This plugin I added to what is to be my new theme as a way to promote additional info on my site to visitors. You can also customize what will appear in the box by using short code in your post although I think it can use some refinement in its use. Better yet have a way in the plugin to control what appears. at the moment all it does automatically is show the next posts in that particular category. However I still think it will be pretty useful.

John’s  Rant:

I have recently started seeing some real pain in the ass emails for what I consider stupid shit. I received an email this past week from some twit who was asking me to remove some very old links from an old website. Seems once upon a time I had used articles from a article directory on a niche site I built a couple of years back. Now that Google is getting all the paranoid to help clean up the web these folks who had done some of their marketing via these articles are scanning the web and making lame threats to get folks to remove the links like this but monkey who had sent me this email. I did remove his content but I also sent him a worded email about how you can get better results by asking and not making false threats like a lawsuit because I was linking to his site. Seems I was correct in remembering that the courts have upheld linking to a website that is publicly available cannot be controlled. After all this it does dawn on me that if you work for the dark side you have some major opportunities to destroy your competition through negative SEO though.

Now that that fun is over on the plus side I have been pretty busy this week seems when it rains it pours. Just as I thought I had hit a wall of slowdown lots of great folks started asking for some work to be done on their sites. Good timing also as I am about to launch a new major project I was wondering if I would be bored for a few days but no longer The work is lining up again thanks everyone and a few of you even listen to the show so thanks.

Also I have been seeing an increase in articles about how you should avoid Free WordPress themes. Something to think about..

Plus the spammers of domain sales have hit an all time low.. I own a domain called tamethewildweb.com which is due for renewal and they are trying to sell me my own domain name at a reasonable price…

Also as a warning to others if you are planning to move to a new host don’t tell the old one until you move. Ran into an issue helping a client move this week when as a nice guy he told the old host he was planning to move and they lock his account before we could get al his files and now he has to get them to unlock everything thus delaying the move.

Some notes on Managewp.com seems it is actually pretty nice, listen to the show for all the details. I had 30 min before show so set it up and configured 5 sites This is something I think would be great if you have similar sites, but it does have the ability to control site by site. Plus you can clean your database as well as spam comments plus deal with comments for approval.
Something interesting, on one site it did the update and crashed then when I did the plugins it righted itself. Probably because I did WordPress update before plugins but because I was doing plugins from this dashboard I was not locked out until I fixed issue

Plus 3.4 downloads now over 3mil

Shout Outs:

Oliver over in Denmark  –Thanks for the great email encouragement and comments… Look forward to you dropping us a Speakpipe message.. You will be getting a response to your questions shortly and next show I’ll share with rest of listeners.

SEO Facebook Comment 1.4.5.1

The Lowdown:
This is a pretty nice facebook integration of your comments, it still leaves all you original comments in place as well as your regular commenting system. You do have to go and create a Facebook app to use it but that it not that difficult to accomplish. I found the setup to be pretty straight forward. From what the author says this is different in that is plus facebook to your database and then displays it all and not just in an iframe so you will get the seo benefit of the comments. It also give the commenter the option to post to facebook or not, plus when making a comment if you manage many pages you can choose who to be when creating the comment.

And The Winner Is… 1.1.1

The Lowdown:
So I had a client that wanted to run a contest where they would read about it in print then have to go to the website and answer a trivia question from the print publication and then get entered to win a prize. They would get entered right or wrong but they still wanted to direct them. I have come up with a solution involving Gravity forms but they discovered this plugin and asked me to use it instead so here is my impression of it.

What it is designed to do is change any post into a contest where all the comments become entries and then the plugin will do a random selection of the winner at the end date of contest. Set up is easy It seems to work out ok and has an easy to select the winner so we are running it and if I run into any issues will report back.
Rating 3 Dragons

Content Scheduler 0.9.8

The lowdown:

I have actually been using this plugin on another client’s site for sometime now and had to use it again for the one above. The reason of course was to stop publishing of the contest post without having to get in there and remember to do that in case they cannot get in and select winner on the end date and had to come in a couple days late.  I have found this to be working pretty nicely and does a nice job of stopping posts publication either by making it a draft or private.

Title Split Testing for WordPress

https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/title-split-testing-for-wordpress/

If your headline sucks, no one will read your article. Split test titles to find out which ones attract the most readers.

Newspaper editors have known for generations that a great headline sells papers. If the headline sucks, then it doesn’t matter how good the rest of the article is, because no one will read it.
Top newspapers like The Huffington Post now apply this principle to their online publications by testing different headlines for the same story, live on their website.
However, if your not a multi-million dollar news corporation, you can’t afford to develop proprietary testing systems. That’s why we created the Title Split Testing Plugin for WordPress so that you can do the same simple tests for FREE.
It enables you to create a number of different titles for each article, and randomly display different titles to different users to find out which title achieves the highest click-thorugh rates. After a few hours of testing you can then select the best title to be shown to all visitors. It also helps you to learn what type of titles get the best reaction from your readers. Do they like short titles or long titles, funny titles or serious titles. Take the guess work out of your article titles and use this plugin to measure real user behaviour.

Marcus’ Take: This is a great and simple way to split test your titles to see which is the most compelling from a traffic and conversion standpoint.

Maintenance Checklist
https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/maintenance-checklist/

Introduction

When supporting WordPress websites, a necessary evil is the tedious tasks of on-going maintenance. Tasks that fall under on-going maintenance are backups, spam & trash comment removal, database optimization, and much more.
What Maintenance Checklist provides is an easy to understand checklist for things that need to be completed on your WordPress site. These tasks will keep your WordPress website running at optimal performance.

Who can benefit from this plugin

Bloggers
With the default installation providing you a checklist of crucial tasks, you can see what needs to be done for your blog to keep it running perfectly. All you need to do is check off the task once you completed it.
Developers
With the “Add Task” feature, you can add tasks for tracking. You may have tons of sites to maintain with each site having special maintenance needs. Just add the task to that site, choose how often it needs to be done, and the Maintenance Checklist Plugin will remind you to do it.

Features

  • Track tasks and check them off when completed.
  • Automatic un-check when task needs to be completed.
  • Add custom tasks for tracking.
  • Delete any tasks.
  • The “Feel Good Engine”. When all tasks have been completed, we make you feel good
  • for all your hard work!

Marcus’ Take: great way to centralize your tasks. Would be a lot better if this could output or feed from RSS, giving you a full scope of your tasks on all sites.

WP-Retina 2X
https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wp-retina-2x/

This plugin creates the image files required by the Retina (high-DPI) displays and it displays them to your visitors accordingly. Your website will now look beautiful and smooth on every device.

In the case the resolution of the original images are not high enough, you will see a warning in the Media Library where you will be able to re-upload bigger images.
It handles two different methods (for now) to serves the images to your visitors. Pick the one that works best with your hosting and environment.

Marcus’ Take: Really cool “developing technology” that you might want to try with your retina display devices.

John’s & Marcus Rant: What to rant about?

WooHoo I won WordPress 3.4 dropped day after last show on June 13 damn I guess I can still guess the week if not the day. Was sure a quick trip from RC# to release. Wanting to see how fast it would download I went to get a screenshot of counter when I loaded the page it showed 5090 at 12:05pm PST and in the 1 min it took for my screen capture program to load it went to 6593 My bet is 13 million by podcast recording time –second shot on day of podcast a week later.
.

Wohoo this is big seems to be a big problem for update to WordPress 3.4 if you get an error Fatal error: Call to undefined method dbrc_wpdb::delete() in wp-includes/option.php on line 370 go here https://www.techbeast.net/2012/06/13/wordpress-3-4-fatal-error-upgrading-database/

I have also done a short article on this on the WPPlugins site since the very first site I updated had this happen to it.

Smart Slug 1.4.1

The Lowdown:
Simple install and activate no settings all it does is remove the simple words like and, to, the from your slug when it is created. a very nice and lazy plugin. It does have an expandable list of words you can add to or take away from.
Adds a nice piece to SEO I do believe. Just a simple lazy plugin.
Ranking 4 Dragons.

WP E-commerce Expanding Categories 0.1.1

The Lowdown:
Ok this is a great addition to any wp e-commerce install if you have multiple categories and subcategories and even sub-sub categories. What it does is collapse the widget listing in your sidebar and allow for it to be expanded at a click. you know the old collapsible menus. This is a nice feature and was badly needed for my clients site which and a couple dozen sub and sub-sub cats and made a very ugly side bar menu.

Advanced Access Manager 1.6.6

The Lowdown:
This is a pretty robust access manager plugin. I was in need of such a device to allow subscribers access to one certain part of the site but it can also be used to limit access by other roles to areas of the site you do not want them to be. I did have some difficulty in configuring one site and getting to properly add a new role and limit what I wanted to limit. In the end I did get it to work but I did have to do a little work on understanding the roles and which plugins get what role when installed and and figuring out how to access some roles for limitation. While I liked this plugin I am still on the lookout for something more simple to use.

Site PIN
https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/site-pin/

Prevent careless visitors by locking your site down with a PIN

Requires: 3.0 or higher
Compatible up to: 3.3.2
Last Updated: 2012-6-18
Downloads: 16
Author: Marcus Downing

Whenever a site is under development, or its content should remain private, you want to prevent to general public from reading it – whether deliberately or by accident.

A common way to do this is with HTTP authorization, but this has some problems and is often confusing for the viewer/client.

Site PIN solves these problems by replacing authorization with a simple PIN. This has the following advantages:

• Everybody knows what a PIN is, and it’s clearly not the same as a password.
• Logging into WordPress bypasses the PIN, so you can’t lock yourself out
• It’s just a WordPress plugin, so no server configuration is necessary.
• You can change or remove the PIN from WordPress admin.

Marcus’ Take: This is a really quick way to get your clients to see a stage site that may be in development without all the crazy setup of HTTP authorization by just using a PIN. Perfect solution for what I was looking for in a client stage site.

Twitter Cards
https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/twitter-cards/

Twitter cards make it possible for you to attach media experiences to Tweets that link to your content. Simply add a few lines of HTML to your webpages, and users who Tweet links to your content will have a “card” added to the Tweet that’s visible to all of their followers.
As a developer, Twitter cards can…

  • Give you control of how your content is displayed with Tweets
  • Drive traffic to your site
  • Increase the number of people following your Twitter accounts through content attribution

.
Marcus’ Take:
This is a really cool plugin that lets you take advantage of twitter in a whole new way. I highly recommend this plugin for just about everyone who integrates twitter into their site’s user experience.

WP AdCenter (Premium Plugin)
The Plugin site at WPAdcenter.com
The Authors Site https://kooc.co.uk/ where they have a few other plugins

The Lowdown:
After install head over to its menu The only setting to make is paypal address seems it does not offer the sandbox top bad. The you need to set up your zones, packages and campaigns. Then set up at least one advertiser so you can test it out. The one problem I ran into was lack of documentation until I went duh!! Check the zip folder for info and there is a link to complete online documentation on how to use it. It uses widgets to place your ad block a nice feature or get the code and place that. It is either php code or short code nice feature.
Adding the ads was pretty easy after that and so was setting up the payment page now just sit back and let the cash roll in.

I have a coupe plugins from the same authors Sean & Randy over at beAutomated.com
First is one that seem like allot of fun more than anything else.
beCounted 1.0.2

Now onto a serious note for a plugin
Benchmark Email Lite 2.3
Last updated June 5th
Author: beAutomated

The Lowdown:
First you will need an account at Benchmark email https://benchmarkemail.com wwhere you get a 30 day free trial after that it costs not sure how much did not examin thier services.
I had a little trouble locating my API key at benchmark but the instructions from the plugin where pretty good only missing one line look for small link to generate your API key.
I do like the one feature I noticed in tier plug ins and that is to limit what page to show it on.
It works very nice and if you have more than one list you choose it when setting up the widget plus a couple other base settings. All in all pretty nice plugin that has a widget that conforms to your theme quite nicely.  And if you want to place elsewhere they have the code ready to go for you. And you can send any post as an email right from the posts edit area. Where you can schedule it or send now. It send a pretty nice email but I would want to edit up what it send I am sure that can be done somewhere.

And finally one for WP e-commerce since I have recently completed that site I thought I would start sharing the plugins used
WPEC Personalize

The Lowdown:
Ok this plugin is pretty simple in essence of course you need wp e-commerce installed before you can use this. Ok here is the deal in wpec you can set a spot for your clients to personalize the product but it is simple one big text box. what this plugin does is allow you to create single line or text box and even double up on them and to determine which products they go to. This is great like this store which is an embroidery shop and sells things like name badges and sometimes it is one name other times it is multiple names. All in all pretty good.

wpTextResizeControls is an easy to use template tag to generate Increase, Decrease, reset font size controls for body text on a WordPress site. Just add wpTextResizeControls(0) to your template for the controls to be automatically styled, or wpTextResizeControls(1) to manually style. When manually styling, wpTextResizeControls is the container, and increaseFont, resetFont, and decreaseFont are all anchors you can target.

Marcus’ Take: This was a real easy plugin to use when trying to redesign an old client site that only needed tweaks with the typestyles. Rather than mess with the entire CSS and stylesheet structure, I opted to use this plugin instead. It took a few minutes to clear the cache and make sure the plgin qas working, but it did it’s job well and works just as promised.

This plugin add a new metabox in posts, pages and custom post type. In this metabox you can insert name of users (comma-separed) enabled to view it. If a post haven’t users enabled and it has a parent, it is enabled for users for parent posts and pages.

Marcus’ Take: This was the perfect solution for an intranet site I was working with that was limited on the specific user TYPES that I would use to read a post. This let me break it down into individual teams instead. This let me call out individual people to see a particular post. Quite a nifty advancement.
