Benefits – Benefits – Benefits

Having a review done by us or having an interview helps the traffic to the developers website, as was bought to our attention recently when we did an interview and reviewed a plugin for a developer who sent us snap shots of their traffic before and after the shows. The traffic stayed, so there are great benefits to being reviewed by WP Plugins A to Z. Submit Your Plugin Here.

Amber’s Rant:

Welcome to Episode 614 – Handing Out WordPress Plugins  We’ve got a couple of great in-depth plugins to cover for you, some recent news in both the WordPress World and the Tech World in general, and some awesome WordPress Tips!

First off, HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!! Jack Frost is officially doing his nightly dance across the rooftops and lawns! Hope everyone is keeping warm and dry out there!

A bit of an announcement for our producers out there today – starting from this show and moving forward, the show is gonna be here every other week. I don’t know if you guys have noticed, but we seem to be having life jumping up and down and demanding our attention about every other week causing us to cancel a bit more often then we like lately… so, we are giving up the boxing fight, laying down our gloves and giving in.

We will be keeping the show as every other week until life allows us to come back for our regular weekly show – though we will be here only every other week until further notice.

A few regular reminders before we start the show today….

Reminders:

  • Remember that the show starts at 12:30 PM Pacific Time, with a pre-stream starting around 12:15 PM Pacific Time. Pre-stream is where we twiddle with the dials and knobs and really just warm up our voices, so join in for some entertainment value!
  • Our show notes for each episode can be found at wppluginsatoz.com – the newest show notes will be up within 24 hours and on our front page!
  • Don’t forget that this is a value for value show, and that you are a big part of it’s creation! You are our producers, and we need you to help us produce! Get out there and hit some like buttons, share an episode or two, and let people know that you help to produce the longest running WordPress Plugins podcast!

That’s it for reminders, don’t forget to stick around until the end of the show for some possibly life altering advice!

...When you see this in the notes, it means we didn’t read this on the show. The only way to find this information out is to read our Show Notes!

…You can send any questions/suggestions or notes saying ‘hi’ over to me at amber@wppro.ca, or hit up our site wpppluginsatoz.com/contact – Be creative with the title so that the spammer eater doesn’t eat your note though!

Let’s start the show with this weeks Featured Artist:

Artist:

Greg’s Graphics (Greg Holdsworth)  — https://gregsgraphics.com

This is a really cute mish-mash Halloween costume on a kid! Gotta love the ghost witches! My favourite one from one of my humans in training was when she decided she was going to be a super-bumblebee-duck-vampire. Always awesome seeing what kids come up with for their Halloween costumes – and the WordPress logo makes me think about throwing memory cards and flash drives into the treat bucket…

Going through the Art Vaults is awesome, but we would love some new art! You can send it into us at https://wppluginsatoz.com/artwork/. You can also check out the art vaults yourself there too!

…We can NEVER have too much art!

Breaking News in the WordPress World at large!!

…If I missed something, shoot me a link at amber@wppro.ca – it may show up on the next show!

News this week:

WordPress Vulnerability Report – October 25
(https://solidwp.com/blog/wordpress-vulnerability-report-october-25/) – Hopefully the awesome looking site will be working when we try and show it on the show today! There was a Maintenance and Security release issued on October 12 for WordPress if you are not aware. The next major release version 6.4 is expected to be released on November 7.

There are 125 new vulnerabilities disclosed since the last report, 61 patches for plugins, 64 unpatched. The ones I most easily recognize are: Simple Calendar – Google Calendar Plugins, Custom post types, Custom Fields and more, Duplicate Theme, Auto Login New User After Registration, WhatsApp Share Button, PowerPress Podcasting plugin by Blubrry, Freesoul Deactivate Plugins – Plugin manager and cleanup, and Ultimate Addons for WPBakery Page Builder.

WordPress 6.4 RC1 released
(https://wptavern.com/wordpress-6-4-rc1-released) – WordPress 6.4 RC1 (First Release Candidate for WordPress 6.4) has been released as of October 17th! There are 40 additional closed Trac tickets since 6/4 Beta 4, dozens of GitHub commits, and commits for Twenty-Twenty-Four. As of now, the flagship font library feature has had to be punted down to 6.5 due to gaps in the Font API’s that couldn’t be resolved in time, though the upcoming release is still packed with new features and improvements. A few highlights include a new lightbox functionality, redesigned command palette, block hooks, expanded design tools, and a new default theme. RC1 is ready for the next round of testing, and WordPress 6.4 is still on track to be released on November 7th, 2023.

WordPress 6.4 disables attachment pages for new installations
(https://wptavern.com/wordpress-6-4-disables-attachment-pages-for-new-installations) –
The upcoming release of 6.4 is still on track for November 7, and will be disabling attachment pages for new installations. Up until now, WOrdPress automatically created attachment pages when users upload a file through the media upload system. It has been treated as a special post type that holds information about the file and each attachment is accessible under its own URL. SEO plugins have been redirecting attachment pages for years as they rarely have any significant purpose. There will be no changes to existing sites. They will continue to work as they always have, but new sites will have their attachment pages redirected to the attachment URL. Site admins who want to enable or disable attachment pages can use the new wp_attachment_pages_enabled database option to control attachment pages’ behaviour. You can learn a bit more about this through the link here in our show notes.

Kinsta launches free static site hosting for up to 100 websites, including WordPress
(https://wptavern.com/kinsta-launches-free-static-site-hosting-for-up-to-100-websites-including-wordpress)
– Kinsta launched its static site hosting product on October 18th, and they made a rather strong entrance into the market with a free tier that is competitive with established solutions from Vercel, Netlify, and GitHub Pages. Companies can host up to 100 static sites for free, including static WordPress sites, which Kinsta deploys from its global edge network of more than 300 locations. Kinsta’s free static hosting tier comes with 10 features and limitations, which you can look at by following the link here in our show notes. Customers can host pre-built sites or sites built with static site generator frameworks that use Node.js. There are quick start example repositories for many popular static site generators, including Astro, Cuttlebelle, Docusaurus, Eleventy, Gatsby, Nuxt, Qwik, React, React with Vite, and VuePress.

Automattic acquires Texts, an All-in-One Messaging App
(https://wptavern.com/automattic-acquires-texts-an-all-in-one-messaging-app) – Automattic has acquired Texts, which is an all-in-one messaging platform for $50 million. Texts is a newer company founded in 2020 that creates a centralized inbox for all major messaging platforms including iMessage, WhatsApp, Instagram, Telegram, Signal, Twitter, LinkedIn, Slack, and Discord. This purchase states that the company is moving “into a fourth market that’s integral to the modern web experience: messaging.” In response to an inquiry about the status of the iOS and Android mobile apps for Texts, a representative from Automattic said the company is currently testing an iOS beta with a subset of users. Android support is on the roadmap. The representative stated there are no plans to change pricing right now, though Automattic is considering the addition of a freemium plan in the future. They are also planning on more integrations down the road including Matrix, Tumblr, Snapchat, Google Messages, and Reddit.

LiteSpeed Cache 5.7 patches XSS vulnerability
(https://wptavern.com/litespeed-cache-5-7-patches-xss-vulnerability) – The LItSpeed Cache plugin provides all-in-one site acceleration capabilities, server-level caching, and a collection of optimization features. It is compatible with WordPress multisite, and popular plugins like WooCommerce, bbPress, and Yoast SEO. Wordfence security researcher István Márton discovered the XSS vulnerability and disclosed it to the LiteSpeed Cache Team on Autufst 14, 2023. The way this vulnerability works is as follows:

The LiteSpeed Cache plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via the ‘esi’ shortcode in versions up to, and including, 5.6 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping on user supplied attributes. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers with contributor-level and above permissions to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page.

It has been cautioned that previous versions of WordPress contained a vulnerability that allowed shortcodes supplied by unauthenticated commenters to be rendered in certain configurations. ALl versions since WordPress 5.9 were subjust to this, and if users don’t use a patched version of WordPress they will be vulnerable to unauthenticated attackers exploiting this Cross-Site Scripting vulnerability. You can find out more by following the link in our show notes.

State of the Word 2023 will broadcast live from Madrid on December 11
(https://wptavern.com/state-of-the-word-2023-will-broadcast-live-from-madrid-on-december-11) – WordPress co-founder Matt Mullenweg will be delivering his annual State of the Word (SOTW) address from Madrid before a live audience on December 11, at 15:00 UTC. Traditionally Mullenweg has used the State of the Word address to make important announcements, share progres, galvanize the contributor base, and recast the vision for WOrdPress. Perhaps we will see a demo of functionality that is coming down the line in Gutenberg! LIve attendees will need to reserve a ticket for their seats at the in-erson event. A live stream will be available for the vast majority of the WordPress world, and as always anyone will be able to submit questions for the live Q&A protion. Be sure to check out the link in our shownotes for more on this!

Why AI progress hitting the brakes is more likely than world domination
(https://thenextweb.com/news/ai-progress-hitting-brakes-more-likely-than-world-domination)
– This is an interesting article that explains how we are using so much data centre space right now, that we are more likely to hit a wall in space then we are to have AI take over. Before we can ever truly tap the true potential of AI, we are more likely to hit a wall for space needed first. The article points out how we are at an all time low for data centre space right now, causing the prices to rise, and this is causing a lot of unease among tech leaders. As it stands at this time, we are more likely to hit a physical constraint then we are to have AI take over the world. It’s a very interesting article, I highly recommend you have a look through it!

This plugin was created as a way to help customers find documentation  articles before submitting a support ticket. The goal is to reduce the  number of support tickets submitted by helping customers find and answer  themselves. Maybe you can find other uses as well!

WordPress Tips

We would love to hear some tid bit tips from some of our producers out there – what did you figure out by breaking something? Or what did you need to learn in order to help someone? You can send these tid bits into me at amber@wppro.ca

Making Sites

When learning something brand new to you, and you feel like you are just not getting it, don’t despair! I have found that even when you feel like you are not getting whatever it is at all, just keep plugging away a couple hours a day, and eventually your brainmeats will manage to absorb the information you are trying to beat into it – most of the time anyways.

There will always be some things that you just won’t get, and it’s not the end of the world when that happens. This industry in and of itself is so varied, you can’t learn it all – and even in this one branch of development, there are so many branches there is just no way that you can master them all. Having a basic understanding of most things and choosing 2 things to specialize in seems to be a grand way to go.

So if you are great with Gutenberg, but not overly great with page builders – make Gutenberg your speciality! There is always a way to make things work in your benefit when your brainmeats just cannot absorb some information cause it doesn’t work that way.

Beginners Tips

What happens when you are working on a project and you get sick and gotta shut down in order to get better?

Well, as human beings we get sick – especially when you have the human beings in training living with you. It happens, and there is just no way around it. Gotta go to the doctors, get the meds, and sleep in order to get better.

So what do you do about your project that you are now feeling stressed about – which of course will make it harder for you to get better faster?

You sleep, and during the hours you are unable to sleep, you work. And you work slowly. A great way to make sure you are fair to your clients, is cut down on the hours you charge your clients. Make it so that you are not charging them for the slow movement due to your being sick – after all if you are moving like molasses in December compared to your usual pace, it’s a little unfair to be charging them for the extra hours.

When you get sick, that does not mean that you can’t work, it just means that you will be working more slowly. And that’s okay! You don’t have to try and push through the illness too hard, ’cause that will just make it last longer. Just spend the time you can working, and you will be able to pull through it, get better faster, and feel less stressed because something got done.

I know my humans in training have certainly brought some doozies home from school that have caused me to get pretty sick – and I used to stress about not being able to work as usual. That caused me to be sick for longer and have less productivity. But once I accepted that I can only work for a few hours every day between the bodily shut down most illnesses require to heal from, I was less stressed, and I got better faster, thus getting back to my productivity faster.

It seems so simple – but it makes a world of difference figuring out what is actually worth stressing over. And being sick is not something worth stressing over. There’s always a way around it, always a way to make things work.

The Lowdown:

Ever since WP SiteSync stopped supporting their plugin, I have been keeping an eye out for a plugin that will do the same or at least similar thing for me. After all, when you post the same thing to two sites every time, having something to sync the posts for you makes it a whole lot easier, saving you that 5 minutes which eventually adds up.

Well, this brand new, out of the box free plugin does essentially the same thing! Although it’s a bit different in the way it goes about it’s job.

Once you download and activate it, you will see ‘Sync Posts’ in your left-hand menu. Clicking on this will bring you to the dashboard where you will see the following options:

Website URL:
Post Status:
Number of Posts:
Post Comments:
Author:

With WP SiteSync, you had to install the plugin on the two sites you were using, and the plugin worked only with itself, drawing the information from one site to another within the plugin.

The way this one works, is you install the plugin into whichever site you are wanting to pull the posts into – just the one site. From this dashboard, you put in the URL of the site you are wanting to pull from.

You choose what status the posts will have on this site you are pulling the posts into – you can have them immediately be published once they are downloaded, or keep them as pending, or have them as a draft.

Choosing the number of posts is useful – goes from 0 up to however many you want it seems – although it took over 5 minutes for me to pull in just 3 posts, so the higher the number the longer it seems to take.

For Post comments, this is whether or not you want the plugin to pull in the comments as well.

The options for the author is generated from the authors on the site you are on, and it does not offer an option to not fill this out, just choosing the top of the list available. I like that you need the post author, and it has to be an author on the site the plugin is installed in, because this stops the possibility of simply scooping posts from any old site, stealing content you have no right to.

Once you have filled all this out, click on ‘Start Syncing’.

The plugin will pull the most recently published posts by that author on the site you are pulling from, and insert them into your posts area on your site.

One thing I found interesting, it brings in the images more as a copy and paste. The images work, it just looks a little odd in your draft.

This also brings in the categories from the site – which could be bad if your two sites are not exactly the same. For myself, bringing in the categories was not overly helpful because I don’t have the exact same categories on my two sites, though I was able to easily uncheck the categories I do not check off in the second site, and it worked just fine.

The setup of the post in its entirety is brought in exactly the same, rather than placing the post into whatever templates you have going on in your second site too, so keep this in mind when using this plugin. Whatever posts you import will look exactly the same as whatever site you are bringing the posts in from. For example: the site I was importing from is a light themed site, and I was importing to a dark themed site. The post was light themed still when I imported it, and the layout did not follow the template I had on my second site. As this was a test, it wasn’t an issue, though it could be an issue for people using this who have two different types of templates on their two sites, or a light and dark themed site.

I like how simple and easy to use this plugin is, and I really like the way it is setup. Only having to install this on one site is very useful! For those, like myself, that publish their posts on more than one site, this will save you time and energy.

Definitely worth having a look at!

If you have questions you would like to have asked on the show, send them in to me at Amber@WPPro.ca – let’s see if we can stump my dad!

  • What kind of resources do data centers require to run?
  • Do you think it will be possible for more data centers to crop up, enough of them to continue the evolution of AI to the point of Andromeda AI?

Questions asked after closing credits:

  • Why do you think Boomers have better cybersecurity habits than Millennials and GenZ? Do you think it’s because they watched the development of the Internet, or do you think it’s because they grew up having to make their own entertainment rather than having it spoon fed to them through graphics all the time?
  • What kind of habits around cybersecurity would you recommend people get into in order to help themselves out?
