Benefits – Benefits – Benefits

Having a review done by us or having an interview helps the traffic to the developers website, as was bought to our attention recently when we did an interview and reviewed a plugin for a developer who sent us snap shots of their traffic before and after the shows. The traffic stayed, so there are great benefits to being reviewed by WP Plugins A to Z. Submit Your Plugin Here.

John’s Intro:

Yes we are coming into the Holiday Season and the two weeks from now until the New year are notoriously slow and yes we will be doing a show on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve but they will be a little different. You will need to tune to find out more.

With great appreciation for the No Agenda Show for their inspiration of ideas and the occasional stolen sound clip.

This is a value for value show and I look forward to everyone providing some value back.

Before I get started, you will want to hang around to the end of the show for our Q & A segment with Amber…. and to those listening on the podcast, you may want to check out the YouTube version which has some great discussions before the show starts…

Ambers Rant:

Before I get into my ranty bit, I just wanted to say thank you to everyone that sent me well wishes! That was awesome. Thank you! I wasn’t sick with the Rona or anything, just my daughters usual this time of year sick passed on to me – Now, onto the rant!

This is #49 50 of 53 52 episodes for 2020. Its Episode 490 and things on this show are moving and shaking into a whole new shape. We have reached week 49 50 of the year 2020, and we are now 39 weeks into the Rona! I noticed that for this show, we have A LOT of 9’s going on. That’s supposed to be a good thing though! 9 is a power number! Also, bunch of awesome celestial things going on right now, so maybe we will catch some of that good vibe celestial stuff – and of course pass it on to you, our listeners!

The world has gone nuts – keep the insanity at bay by creating that place I keep talking about! A little place where you can TUNE OUT for a while! It can be anywhere – a blanket thrown over your couch to build a fort, in your bed with your door closed and a ‘Do Not Disturb’ sign or a sock on your door, or even your car! Get into a space all your own, throw on some music and grab a book, or even throw on an audio book and grab a drink! Kick back, and breathe. Try to get there at least once a week, more if you can.

If you have kids, Duct tape is your friend! No, just kidding. Velcro.
Honestly though, just have them give you a WHOLE hour, where they’re only to bother you if they are broken dying or bleeding. It makes a huge difference! And remove all internet AND radio with news hours while zoning out. Try to let go of everything outside of your control, and work on pestering those around you to do the same.

Rinse and repeat as often as needed.

ClassicPress Options

ClassicPress is a fast growing fork of WordPress that is starting to come into its own. ClassicPress is focused on Business Websites, runs fast and is looking pretty good. There are a few plugins specifically for ClassicPress and all plugins for WordPress 4.9.9 work well on it. I do believe it has a future.

One thing I am looking forward to in the ClassicPress World is the expansion of the number of ClassicPress specific plugins and their own repository. Currently there are not a lot of ClassicPress specific plugins but I do know it is going to grow and I’ll have to expand this segment then. Who knows, it could take over the whole show.

This week for ClassicPress I have:

The Lowdown:

This is a great plugin to use for tracking events on your site. It comes in real handy for the developers to insure when something gets broke by “your client” you do not get the blame and you can properly justify those extra billing hours to fix it.

The plugin shows when they login what they turn on or off and any updates made ect. A great plugin to check out.

Disable User Enumeration

https://wordpress.org/plugins/disabling-user-enumeration/

Version:
Requires: or higher
Compatible up to:
Released:01 January 1970
Downloads:
Last Updated:01 January 1970
Ratings:

(0 star out of 5)

Description

User Enumeration is something I only recently learned about, and this plugin I hope does exactly what it says it does.
It is designed to stop the Username-Harvesting that some seem to enjoy doing.

This only works against those that are NOT logged in, so there is no worry that your users will accidentally get screwed over. And this plugin doesn’t have any settings to bother with, you just plug it in, activate it, and off it goes!

They offer up a way to check if your site has User Enumeration going on with this link: https://selectedfirms.co/wp-json/wp/v2/users Which is pretty helpful, I think.

This could be especially useful if you have a site that has multiple users, or a chat community going on.

Best Image Gallery & Responsive Photo Gallery – FooGallery

Version:

Compatible up to:
Released:01 January 1970
Downloads:
Last Updated:01 January 1970
Ratings:

(0 star out of 5)

The Lowdown:

Some titles are just too convoluted for a plugin, however this is a pretty good plugin as far as image galleries go. It’s pretty easy to use and performs pretty well. A couple settings are locked away for the premium version but for the most part you should be ok with this one.

Debug Bar

Version:
Requires: or higher
Compatible up to:
Released:01 January 1970
Downloads:
Last Updated:01 January 1970
Ratings:

(0 star out of 5)

Description

This plugin is pretty nifty. You plug it in and activate it, and you wind up with a little added-on bar on your admin page that offers up information! To be honest, it took me a little to figure out where the bar pops up – which is right at the top in smallish writing. Very unobtrusive. Although when you click on it, it brings you to a whole new page area, where you can look at things in detail.

It also tracks PHP Warnings and Notices to make them easier to find.

When SAVEQUERIES is enabled the mysql queries are tracked and displayed.

There are a couple of codes they give you to add in the options to your wp-config.php. Very awesome!
( define( ‘WP_DEBUG’, true );
define( ‘SAVEQUERIES’, true ); )

This is a totally free plugin that seems very useful! I would recommend anyone who is in developing at least check this out and see if it helps you out at all. And I would love to hear back about it!

I personally find it very useful.

WP Recipe Maker

Version:
Requires: or higher
Compatible up to:
Released:01 January 1970
Downloads:
Last Updated:01 January 1970
Ratings:

(0 star out of 5)

The Lowdown:

This is their upgraded plugin or replacement, as it were, for what used to be WP Ultimate Recipe which is a plugin I installed at ‘The Tavern’ last summer not knowing they had a replacement coming.

This new one is not too bad, it has made some change in how it functions and creates recipes which I am getting used to. I am glad I discovered the change before I got too many recipes in my site so was not to difficult to convert over.

They do have a conversion preocess if you want to leave another recipe plugin.

All in all a pretty good plugin

BBQ Firewall

https://wordpress.org/plugins/block-bad-queries/

Version:
Requires: or higher
Compatible up to:
Released:01 January 1970
Downloads:
Last Updated:01 January 1970
Ratings:

(0 star out of 5)

Description

From the creator of Black Hole for Bad Bots and working in tandem with it, we have this lightweight firewall that protects you against a huge long list of things. BBQ Firewall – or Block Bad Queries Firewall.

I appreciate that it runs silently in the background, and that there is nothing really needed for the set up. Just plug’n’play.

This plugin does not collect or store any data, does not set any cookies, and does not connect to any 3rd party locations.
There is nothing to set up, so there is no place in the settings to add your email or any other information; this means you won’t be getting any periodic reports or anything like that.

There IS a pro version of this, though the free version seems to cover everything a general user needs.
Go check this out.

What is Syntax highlighting in WordPress and why would I want to add it? (I found it in a podcast here: https://podbay.fm/p/wp-the-podcast-or-wordpress-business-and-marketing-tips-for-the-wordpress-web-design-professional/e/1595253648)

What is the difference between a good and a bad back up?

How do you install a backup if the backup is needed to bring the site back to life?

After you have figured out what plugin has ‘broken’ your site and have disabled it, what’s the next step? Do you just delete it? Or is there a way to figure out why it broke your site and can you fix it?
