Having a review done by us or having an interview helps the traffic to the developers website, as was bought to our attention recently when we did an interview and reviewed a plugin for a developer who sent us snap shots of their traffic before and after the shows. John’s Intro:

Welcome to the week after the big party. Kinda seems like the hangover after a great New Year’s party. There is a bit of a letdown and you realize you need to pick up and move forward for the next 500.

Make sure to have a look at the new system for submitting art work for the show https://wppluginsatoz.com/artwork/. You can also view the art work from the past. Currently you can see all the submissions for Episode 500 here https://wppluginsatoz.com/show-art-submitted/ and you can even vote on the art work.

Just a reminder we are now in the 50th week of 2 weeks to flatten the curve from the Rona. The greatest Scam perpetrated on the entire world at once. Prepare now for the annual holiday of only 2 weeks to flatten the curve. Although it does seem a few places like Texas and Missouri are ending the 2 weeks to flatten the curve and open their world back up, let us hope everywhere else follows suit soon.

With great appreciation for the No Agenda Show for their inspiration of ideas and the occasional stolen sound clip.

This is a value for value show and I look forward to everyone providing some value back.

Before I get started, you will want to hang around to the end of the show for our Q & A segment with Amber…. and to those listening on the podcast, you may want to check out the YouTube version which has some great discussions before the show starts…

The first episode of our podcast is here https://www.johnoverall.com/inaugural-podcast-wordpress-plugins-a-to-z/ tune in near the end for some nostalgia about where the show has come from.

Ambers Rant:

This is #9 of 52 episodes for 2021. Its Episode 501, and we are diving in! No need to look before we leap either! More interesting when you don’t watch where you’re going. After all, look at the world right now! The driver of this bus doesn’t seem to be looking where he’s going at all! Probably distracted by his social media…

Speaking of Social Media, I suggest that you get AWAY from that social media, before you crash your own bus!! It’s as bad as cocaine man! Did you know that people are actually having to go to rehab for internet addictions? Although, if you don’t want to go to some fancy pants place for rehab, you could always just do it yourself! Simply do the following: Retreat from the world to under a blanket, curl up on the couch, listen to some shows with no news hours, or to books! Drinks, warm or cold – those help too.

And remember – don’t be afraid to tell your kids to bugger off for an hour – it’s totally allowed to demand they not bother you unless they are broken, dying, or bleeding for the entirety of the hour! Maybe help them to create their own zone out spaces, than walk away quietly while they are ‘arranging’ it – you will more than likely get about an hour all to yourself this way. Just don’t crumple any chip or cookie bags….

Remember, remove all social media and main stream news for your own mental health! Do this for an hour a day.

Rinse and repeat as often as needed.

We have some news from the world of WordPress for you today as well as some great plugins.

ClassicPress Options

ClassicPress is a fast growing fork of WordPress that is starting to come into its own. ClassicPress is focused on Business Websites, runs fast and is looking pretty good. There are a few plugins specifically for ClassicPress and all plugins for WordPress 4.9.9 work well on it. I do believe it has a future.

One thing I am looking forward to in the ClassicPress World is the expansion of the number of ClassicPress specific plugins and their own repository. Currently there are not a lot of ClassicPress specific plugins but I do know it is going to grow and I’ll have to expand this segment then. Who knows, it could take over the whole show.

This week for ClassicPress I have:

Description
A very nice, easy to use additional security plugin this one.

Once activated, you will find the set up under your settings menu.

You put in your Google Recaptcha if you have one; though if you don’t, no worries, this plugin will still create a honey pot for the hackers.

There are a few other things you are able to do with this plugin; you are able to choose where it is displayed, how the errors page displays to keep hackers from learning valid user account names, whether or not you track users IP addresses, and more.

You can also choose whether or not to get reports, which I always appreciate.

This is a nice little freebie, go and check this out!

Description
For a free plugin, this is almost overwhelming with it’s options! This is a fairly new plugin, less than 10 activation’s so far.

They claim to have the ability to to ‘sense human interaction’, without the captchas, hidden fields, silly questions, or anything like that. Simply ‘sense human interaction’, and stop the spammers from spamming in your comments box.

Their site, although reminding me of an early 90’s video game, is rather informative. And the plugin looks to be promising! I can’t speak from firsthand experience as we don’t really get a lot of commentators on the sandbox page, though I CAN say that it works in WordPress, and is a lot of fun to set up with all the options they give you. I’m not going to bother listing them here, because that would take me a while to list them off. You will have to go and check this plugin out yourself.

I can see this plugin going FAR if they are able to fully deliver on all that is promised!

I would love to hear back from someone out there who has given this a go on their site with a lot of commentators. Let me know how well this plugin ‘senses human interaction’!

Because I can’t fully test it on the comments, I can only give this a 4 – but I am really excited to see where this plugin goes!

Description
I feel like I may have covered this before – though I think it is more likely that I wanted to cover this, and just never got around to it.

This plugin is designed to redirect hackers to an FBI site – and it seems to work still, even though it has not been updated for quite a while.

One drawback, is that ANYone who tries to access important files like wp-config.php, or wp-config-sample.php, will be redirected to an FBI site.

So, for the newbie hackers, great scare! For your boss trying to get in and fix something gone wrong… could be bad…

Although this could be great for pranking someone!

You CAN change the redirect by doing the following:

“In the WordPress root of your website open the .htaccess file and change the existing url in a custom one”.

This could be awesome, but could also be soooo irritating – I will leave that up to you!

Totally free, still works even though it’s gotten a little old before it’s even been downloaded more than 50 times.

Go and check this out!

Listener Questions

Hi John.

I know this is more of a security and Elementor question, but I wanted to get your take on it as well.

I’m using the latest version of Elementor Pro on a couple of my sites, and the contact form is built using the Elementor form widget. I’ve had reCAPTCHA v3 set up through Google for several months now, and set up in Elementor’s settings. I’ve had Google analytics set up from the start.

When someone fills out the contact form, I get an email, and very shortly thereafter I can see the resulting hit on that page in Analytics.

All has been working perfectly, and still is. However…

In the last couple of weeks, I’ve gotten the same email from the form being filled out, but this time it’s from a spammer. Legitimate emails are still coming in.

Here’s where the mystery is. After I get one of those, Google Analytics DOESN’T show that the contact page was visited at all. It’s as though the spammer was able to “fill out” the form without being detected! I’m scratching my head as to how this is possible.

I’ve obviously updated plugins and WordPress as needed, but haven’t changed the form, or anything in GA or reCAPTCHA.

Any thoughts on what this might be, or what direction you would go to investigate? Is there is a more secure contact form system/plugin you’d recommend?

Thanks in advance.

Greg H

Questions and Answers –

*** Note if you have questions you would like asked, send them to Amber at WPPro.ca she will get them into this segment. ****

I THINK that when a domain goes up for sale, the content of the domain becomes copyright free – you can take it and do what you like with it.

However, can the content become copyright free so to speak, if neglected for an extended period of time, even if the domain is still being paid for?

Say there is an old site that’s been completely neglected, that you want to save; but it does not belong to you.

If you were to recreate it on your own domain, but give the original creator ALL of the credit for all of the information, would you still get into trouble for copyrighting?

Is there a way to do something like that, but not infringe upon copyright laws?

How do you set down copyright on a site? Do you just need to put down the word ‘copyright’ on the site?
