John’s Rant: What to rant about?

WordPress 4.3 dropped today.. a great into article https://www.wpbeginner.com/news/whats-new-in-wordpress-4-3/
My thoughts on the customizer and how it slows down the design process.
They did add something nice that many theme developers had already taken care of and that is the ability to add a site favicon simply and easily.

Stay tuned after the plugins for the section on this weeks issue.

https://wordpress.org/plugins/fb-group-feed/

A plugin to display Facebook group post/feed on your web page, post or in a widget. Facebook offers a lot of social plugins to hook to your web site. All these are thought tolarated towards your personal profile and/or FB-page you own or manage. Few (if any) are specifically for Facebook “groups” so here is a plugin to fix this. Now you can share post made at your Facebook group on your web site and just as easily as from your profile!Rating: 5 out of 5

John’s discussion this week about a project.

So this weeks challenge was around what to do with a hacked WordPress website. It seems as WordPress has become the XP of the internet and so many people are now using it and there are so many levels of sites out there, I am seeing more and more hacked websites.

This week was no different having repaired 4 different sites this past week and each having its own set of challenges and each hacked just a little different that the other. The specifics on how they were hacked I am not going into as that just takes too much time but suffice it to say it was due to insecure plugins and themes.

How you can prevent yourself from becoming a victim and if you do is what this discussion is about.

List of things to maintain on your site:
1. Keep WordPress Core up to date
2. keep all plugins up to date
3. keep Theme up to date
4. removed all unused plugins and themes
5. Make regular backups rec daily and weekly so you have 2 sets, keeping min 4 daily and 3 weekly
6. monitor site with a plugin such as wp file monitor plus

now as good as this helps you may still become a victim and if you do first thing to do is not panic and next is to determine when it was hacked and see if you have a clean backup. If you do restore, then go in and fix the hole so it cant be used. If not prepare for a 2 to 6 hour excursion though your site to save it.

You will need to start by finding the main hacked file then follow it though your site looking for other compromised files. The hackers are very good at leaving files all over the place as one they gain access to your site they infect numerous files throughout the site leaving themselves little doors to come back in.

This process can sometimes be done with scanners but i have found scanners to only be about 75% effective and the other 25% required manual checking of directories for unusual file names, files with incorrect sizes and dates.

Sometimes you can do simple things like replacing the core files in mass, simply delete the wp-admin, wp-includes and the root files all but your wp-config.php and htaccess and replace them. It is best to delete them and replace than simply overwriting as the hackers love to hide their back doors several layers deep in the admin or includes folder.

Once done you may have to manually search your wp-content folder.

All in all you need to prepare to sit down for a while to get the mess cleaned up.

Hopefully this may help someone save some time in the future.
