Benefits – Benefits – Benefits

Having a review done by us or having an interview helps the traffic to the developers website, as was bought to our attention recently when we did an interview and reviewed a plugin for a developer who sent us snap shots of their traffic before and after the shows. The traffic stayed, so there are great benefits to being reviewed by WP Plugins A to Z. Submit Your Plugin Here.

John’s Intro:

This is a value for value show and I look forward to everyone providing some value back.

Before I get started, you will want to hang around to the end of the show for our Q & A segment with Amber…. and to those listening on the podcast, you may want to check out the YouTube version which has some great discussions before the show starts…

Amber’s Rant:

This is #23 of 52 episodes for 2022!

I hope everyone out there is doing well and keeping healthy – remember, just because the cold is starting to go away finally, that doesn’t mean you should stop taking your vitamin C. Allergy season and spring time colds are upon us – and they suck.

Also, sunshine is awesome! If you can, find some time to head out into the sunshine with friends and family! Always good for the heart and soul!

Winter is leaving… Summer is coming…
(Winter is coming from Game of Thrones spoof for those who don’t get it like my husband)

We have some news from the world of WordPress for you today as well as some great plugins.

News this week:

WordPress Vulnerability Report – June 1, 2022 – This list for this week seems to have lesser known plugins. Some of the ones that look familiar to me are Inline Google Maps, CaPa Protect, WPlite, Cross-Linker. There are more, be sure to check it out. No Theme vulnerabilities this week.

WordPress turns 19 – WooHoo! WordPress can legally buy some booze now! This article talks about the history of WordPress and the changes that have come over time to bring it to where it is now.

Gutenberg 13.3 introduces experimental table of contents block – This seems to be designed for long form content. It automatically detects heading blocks within the content and will display them with anchor links that jump to each section. Really cool!

Community team removed red tape from regional WordCamp Applications – The red tape being talked about here refers to the proposal writings, which will no longer need to be written, and you can directly apply to organize a camp for your region using the regular WordCamp application form. This will make it easier to bring WordCamps to your area!

LottieFiles releases official WordPress Plugin – LottiFiles is a company that hosts thousands of Lottie animations, and helps designers create and test their animations. This may be something you will want to check out if this is your area of expertise!

Backdoor baked into premium school management plugin for WordPress – This is a little bit older of an article, though I have only just now seen it. The plugin School Management by Weblizar was designed as a complete management solution for schools, and security researchers have discovered a backdoor being used. This is done through PHP, and was found by JetPack. It has been worked on to be fixed, and there is an update, so if this is a plugin you use, be sure to update if you have not already.

What happens when you combine psychedelics with cybernetics? – What happens, is some really super cool videos! This is an interesting article talking about an individual who combines the two into Cyberdelic, and creates videos! Really cool, absolutely worth watching!

The extras – for even more extra news, check out our Facebook, or Twitter page!

This is the extra news stuff that someone out there might find interesting. To read more, you can head on over to the show notes or newsletter and check it out! If you find something to add for next show, send me a link at amber@wppro.ca

New ChromeLoader malware surge threatens browsers worldwide – ChromeLoader is a browser hijacker that can modify the victims web browser settings to show search results that promote unwanted software, fake giveaways and surveys, and adult games and dating sites. Not cool for the younglins, be sure to check this out!

New method to kill cyberattacks in less than a second – Thanks to Cardiff University, one can now use Artificial Intelligence to prevent up to 92% of files on a computer from being corrupted, with it taking just 0.3 seconds on average for a piece of malware to be wiped out. Pretty cool article!

Web Trackers caught intercepting online forms even before users hit submit – Study reveals users’ email addresses are exfiltrated to tracking, marketing, and analytics domains before such info is submitted and without prior consent. This is a pretty awesome study, worth taking a read through.

Hackers have found a new way to smuggle malware onto your device – Isn’t that just lovely? The new way – through a PDF file. Give this a read, it goes through how this works.

What’s new in Chrome 102, available now – Well, there are new enhancements for web apps, new keyboard shortcuts for tabs, and useful info about new online stores. If you are interested in delving deeper, read on!

Long lost @ symbol gets new life obscuring malicious URLs – Apparently, if you mouse over the url’s of those odd-ball emails, you will see things that start out with an @ symbol. Most browsers will open these links, although some like Microsofts Internet Explorer refuses. Read on to find out more!

Phishing websites now use chatbots to steal your credentials – So the hackers are getting lazy. Makes sense, the rest of the pro’s out there are using these chat bots, so why not the hackers too? These bots are guiding users through the process of handing over their login credentials – read on to find out all the nitty gritty details!

Microsoft Teams, Windows 11 hacked on first day of Pwn2Own – During the FIRST DAY of Pwn2Own Vancouver 2022, contestants won $800,000 after successfully exploiting 16 zero-day bugs to hack multiple products, including Microsoft’s Windows 11 operating system and the Teams communication platform.

How to write software with mathematical perfection – Leslie Lamport revolutionized how computers talk to each other. Now he’s working on how engineers talk to their machines. Great article to check out, absolutely worth your time.

ClassicPress Options

ClassicPress DOES have a future – we just don’t have the time to help ClassicPress get themselves out there right now.

As the ClassicPress World expands the number of ClassicPress specific plugins in their own repository we see them growing. There are a few plugins specifically for ClassicPress currently, and all the plugins for WordPress 4.9.9 work well.

If anyone out there is using ClassicPress and would like to send in some reviews or news, we will gladly add it into this section! You can do so anonymously or let the world know your name – we will respect your choice!

ClassicPress News:

Sadly, the number of plugins in the repository has dropped from 81 to 75. However, there is still a fair amount of recent conversations occurring in the forum, check them out to see what is being discussed using the link below.

The Lowdown:

If you are in need of a simple invoicing plugin for your site this one fits the bill pretty well.

Amber’s Plugin

Quick note for any who are using ‘cut the lights’ – if you recently updated your WordPress to 6.0, you might think that ‘cut the lights’ isn’t working. It IS, though you need to go to ‘cut the lights’ dashboard and choose ‘disable’, save changes, than ‘enable’, save changes. Kinda like turning it off and on again. It still works, just a little glitchy with the newest version of WordPress. ;)

Event Registration pro Calendar

https://wordpress.org/plugins/event-registration-pro-calendar/

Version:1.0.14
Requires:4.8 or higher
Compatible up to:5.3.17
Released:01 March 2018
Downloads:4378
Last Updated:27 November 2019
Ratings:

(1 star out of 5)

The Lowdown:

This plugin was designed with visitors to the site in mind. It’s a calendar where events can be made by the visitor, as well as the site owner. You will find the dashboard for this plugin on the left hand menu under ‘Event Registration Pro’.

There is a bit of a learning curve though – I played around with it for a bit, and found myself feeling confused a couple of times. I think a walk through, or tutorial may be useful for those not wanting to deal with confusion while figuring this out.

This plugin has some great points even though it has not been updated for 2 years now; there is a lot of personalization options for your viewers, a lot detail options, and you are able to see reports of previous months.

Despite the positives, I felt pretty ‘meh’ about this plugin. It looks alright though not awesome, the set up is great though a bit hard to wrap your head around easily.

With this plugin you can integrate the invoice plugin into your WooCommerce store so you can create invoices and quotes though your store.

WP Event Manager – Easily Build your Calendar of Events!

https://wordpress.org/plugins/wp-event-manager/

Version:3.1.43

Last Updated:22 February 2024
Ratings:
4.4
(4.4 star out of 5)

The Lowdown:

I thought this plugin was designed for your site users to use, though it turns out it is just for the site owner to use to create events.

The set up is great, very easy to use, looks great, plays well with others, and offers to build the various pages needed to make this go properly for you.

This could be a fantastic plugin for those who need to create events on their site for their users to view.

The Lowdown:

A nice easy way to customize your login page. Change all the important bits to personalize it for your site.

Amber’s Plugin

Events Manager

https://wordpress.org/plugins/events-manager/

Version:6.4.7.3
Requires:5.2 or higher
Compatible up to:6.5.2
Released:06 August 2008
Downloads:4699374
Last Updated:09 April 2024
Ratings:
4.2
(4.2 star out of 5)

The Lowdown:

Once activated, you will find the dashboard for this under ‘Events’ in the left hand menu. This plugin was designed for event creation with both site owners and site users in mind. It takes a little getting used to and a bit of building out of pages to get them the way you like them, though the amount of personalization available in this is pretty awesome.

This seems to play well with others, and you have the option to make it possible for just signed in users to create events, or simply guests. There is a lot of possibility with this plugin, though I think it would take a bit to learn it all.

If you have questions you would like to have asked on the show, send them in to me at Amber@WPPro.ca and we will answer to the best of our ability!

  • What could cause a compressed Zip 7 file to become corrupted?
  • Say you add something to an external hard drive in a compressed file. You check it, and it’s fine, unzips no problem. Later on, you come back to try and unzip it from that external hard drive, and it is now corrupted. What could cause that?
  • Say you have been using an external hard drive for a while, and it’s all good. Then one day, you go to use it, and it says that the hard drive is corrupted. What causes external hard drives to fail?
    • You try a different, newer external hard drive. It says that this one is also corrupted. Would this be a coincidence do you think or could there be something going on with your computer corrupting these hard drives?
