Benefits – Benefits – Benefits

Having a review done by us or having an interview helps the traffic to the developers website, as was bought to our attention recently when we did an interview and reviewed a plugin for a developer who sent us snap shots of their traffic before and after the shows. The traffic stayed, so there are great benefits to being reviewed by WP Plugins A to Z. Submit Your Plugin Here.

John’s Intro:

This is a value for value show and I look forward to everyone providing some value back. Before I get started, you will want to hang around to the end of the show for our Q & A segment with Amber…. and to those listening on the podcast, you may want to check out the YouTube version which has some great discussions before the show starts…

Amber’s Rant:

This is #22 of 52 episodes for 2022! There are so many 2’s for this episode! Episode 562, 22nd show of 52 shows for the year, year 2022, SO MANY 2’s!

Once again, I shall bring a little info forward on numerology: 2 represents both grace and power, is cooperative, always aiming to bring peace and balance back to a relationship or situation. Two is also very sensitive, and is considered to be the strongest representation of intuition of all the numbers. The number also represents balance – perhaps today will be a well balanced day!

Remember to balance your work and social life, and to balance your life between socials, news, family and friends! Two is a great number to keep in mind when thinking about your plans for the weekend.

Winter is leaving… Summer is coming…
(Winter is coming from Game of Thrones spoof for those who don’t get it like my husband)

We have some news from the world of WordPress for you today as well as some great plugins.

News this week:

WordPress Vulnerability Report – May 18, 2022 – The list of plugins to worry about is nice and short this week, here are a few that I think are easily recognizable: Donations, QP Fundraising Donation and Crowdfunding Platform, LiveSync for WordPress, Five Minute Webshop.

There are also 2 WordPress Themes to be aware of: Discy, and Ask Me. Be sure to keep an eye on these and regularly update.

Hackers are exploiting WordPress tools to hawk scams – As of May 12, cybersecurity research has disclosed a massive campaign that’s responsible for injecting malicious JavaScript code into compromised WordPress websites that redirects visitors to scam pages and other malicious websites to generate illegitimate traffic. The common issue shared: malicious JavaScript had been injected within their website’s files and the database, including legitimate core WordPress files. The JavaScript is activated on every page load, allowing the attacker to redirect the website visitors to a destination of their choice.

Software Freedom Conservancy receives court ruling affirming GPL as both copyright license and contractual agreement – The Software Freedom Conservancy (SFC), a non-profit that provides infrastructure support for free and open source software projects, has received a favourable ruling in its ‘right to repair lawsuit against Vizio’, an American TV manufacturer. The SFC stated that Vizio has ‘repeated failures to fulfill even the basic requirements of the General Public License (GPL)’, after the company refused to procide the source code for software with copyleft licenses that it bundles with its products. This has been going on for a bit, and I think its a good thing that this was passed. The ‘Right To Repair’ motion should be passed for everything in my opinion.

Online Meetup: WordPress NYC to host series on Modern, Privacy-Respecting Analytics and leveraging first-party data – WordPress NYC has a new interesting new six-part series on analytics beginning this week on Thursday, May 19 (today!) at 7 pm EDT. The episode to kick off the series is called ‘The Product & Marketing Data Landscape’. Attendees will get an overview of the current WordPress analytics landscape. Subsequent episodes will cover how to make a tracking plan, how to migrate to open source tracking options (while respecting privacy), and how to leverage WordPress data to improve user experiences. Worth checking out!

WordSesh 2022 kicked off this last Monday on May 16, featuring a world-class speaker lineup and hands-on workshops – The live, virtual conference for WordPress professionals runs from May 16 – May 20 this year. This particular edition is jam-packed with a diverse selection of industry experts – many who have been building high impact projects with WordPress for years! If you haven’t had an opportunity to check it out yet, might be worth a glance!

WooCommerce calls for early testing on custom order table migrations – WooCommerce announced its plan to produce an MVP of custom order tables by Q3, a long-awaited improvement that promises significant performance gains for stores. The plugin’s development team is now calling for developers, agencies, and hosting companies to test migration to its first implementation of customer order tables. If you fit one of these labels, help out if you have the time!

Play-to-earn sells the dream of gaming for cash – so why isn’t everyone playing? – GameFi dangles an enticing carrot in front of all the gamer’s and budding gamer’s out there! Problem is that play-to-earn shows signs of plateauing before it enters the mainstream due to a few things – being paid in Crypto for one thing, another is that there has been a drop of users. This is no good for a sustainable market – need to have more income coming in than going out. There is more, check the article out to find out more!

The extras for even more extra news, check out our Facebook, or Twitter page!

This is the extra news stuff that someone out there might find interesting. To read more, you can head on over to the show notes or newsletter and check it out! If you find something to add for next show, send me a link at amber@wppro.ca

Google Chrome – crucial new security warning for 3.2 billion users – On May 12, Google confirmed that billions of users of the most popular web browser on the planet are affected by the latest security vulnerabilities and should complete the update released on May 10. There were 9 vulnerabilities, 13 security fixes. This article will walk you through it all.

How to bypass the Microsoft Account requirement during setup – Despite Microsofts attempt to make it more difficult to create local accounts during the setup of the Windows Operating System, there are still ways around it. This article talks about 2 great ways to get around it!

Microsoft: Sysrv botnet targets Windows, Linux servers with new exploits – This new variant that has been tracked as Sysrv-K has been upgraded with more capabilities including scanning for unpatched WordPress and Spring deployments. This thing is exploiting vulnerabilities in the Spring Framework and WordPress to ensnare and deploy cryptomining malware on vulnerable Windows and Linux servers. This article walks you through it.

6 reasons to quit Chrome and switch to Vivaldi, the enthusiast’s browser – There are a lot of reasons currently to migrate away from Chrome, and here is Vivaldi’s argument on why you should go over to them. Not sure if they have cookies – but this article makes some decent reasons!

We’re in the age of hybrid working: how to make it work for your team – This article is great! If you work with a team and are doing the hybrid thing, this offers you tips and help on how to make it work just as well as it once did when everyone was sitting in the same office all together.

Researchers invent iPhone malware that works even if your phone is off – Oh great… Apple’s Bluetooth firmware has ‘no protection against modification’ – this is something worth looking into if you are an Apple user.

National bank hit by ransomware trolls hackers with dick pics – After suffering a ransomware attack by Hive operation, the Bank of Zambia made it clear they were not going to pay by posting a picture of male genitalia and telling the hackers to s… well, use your imagination. This happened last week – read on to find out more!!

Spanish police dismantle phishing gang that emptied bank accounts – Spanish police have announced the arrest of 13 people and the launch of investigations on another seven for their participation in a phishing ring that stole online bank credentials. This article goes through what happened.

How to protect your data when ransomware strikes – This is a great article that walks you through what to do when ransomware is attacking. It starts out by explaining what ransomware is, and a bit of its history, and how it works.

Researchers expose inner workings of billion-dollar wizard spider cybercrime gang – Cybercriminal group known as the Wizard Spider has had their inner workings exposed!! Mostly their efforts go into hacking European and US businesses, with a special cracking tool used by some of their attackers to breach high-value targets. Only some of the money they get is put back into the developing of new tools and getting new talent. Want to know more? Read on my friends!

US warns against North Korean hackers posing as IT freelancers – This is not something new I don’t think, though it is likely picking up. Software and mobile app developers from the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) are posing as ‘non-DPRK nationals’ in hopes of landing freelance employment in an attempt to enable the regime’s malicious cyber intrusions. The Lowdown:

Okay, I honestly wasn’t sure if this was a plugin that would really be worth the time to check out – but I was very pleasantly surprised!

What this plugin does, is it creates a menu bar at the top of your plugins page that has the options of:

All, Active, Inactive, Update Available, Drop-ins, Auto-updates Disabled

This reminds me a lot of the plugin ‘New Plugins’ by Cube Color. Same kind of menu at the top, only this one makes it much easier to find the activated or not activated plugins to work with.

I really like this plugin, it works well and plays nice with others – and it is totally free! I would snatch it up while you can!

Toggle Admin Toolbar

https://wordpress.org/plugins/toggle-admin-toolbar/

Version:
Requires: or higher
Compatible up to:
Released:01 January 1970
Downloads:
Last Updated:01 January 1970
Ratings:

(0 star out of 5)

The Lowdown:

This is a pretty useful plugin. You will find it under ‘settings’, then ‘Toggle Toolbar’. This will take you to the settings page for the plugin where you can choose whether or not the toggle button will stay visible or not, and you even get to choose the colour the button will be for re-opening the admin bar! I chose hot pink myself.

This is for when you are working on a site, and you want to see what the site will look like without the admin bar showing, though you don’t want to go in and change the settings within the site, removing the toolbar entirely – then having to go back and turn the thing back on.

The button they are referring to looks like a little hamburger menu option, and it hangs out on the right hand upper corner area of your site.

Great shortcut to make it just a little easier on you!

I know I have worked on a few sites where they did not like seeing the admin toolbar on the site while it was being worked on – though I personally prefer the toolbar while I am working, so I had to go in, turn the toolbar on, then remember to turn the toolbar off when I was done. Not overly hard, just irritating.

I highly recommend this plugin! Makes life just that little bit easier! Also, hot pink buttons are cool.

If you are in need of a simple Google Map on your site this is a great plugin for that. Just install, add you API key, create the map, add some markers and then place it with a short code.

Requires: or higher
Compatible up to:
Released:01 January 1970

Last Updated:01 January 1970
Ratings:

(0 star out of 5)

The Lowdown:

This plugin was created to take your Google Fonts, and host them locally so that your site can be more fully GDPR friendly! Another plugin I wasn’t really expecting to be very awesome has completely surprised me!

Once activated, you will find the dashboard under ‘Settings’, then ‘Google Fonts’. On here you will see listed the various Google Fonts, how many files using this font are pulling from Google Servers, and you will have the option to ‘Host Locally’ via an easy to use button.

Once you press the ‘Host Locally’ button, the settings will be saved; Looking at the list you will still see the font you have just hosted locally, though to the right of it you will now see under ‘Status’ ‘loaded, served from your server’.

Very useful plugin if you are using Google Fonts!

I have purchased a domain name and am looking to set up both a website and use my domain for my email. My questions are:

Do I have to make my domain appear online to just start with using the email?
Are there many steps or is it difficult for a layman person with little to no experience to set up the email themselves?

  • When you are being hacked, will ‘unplugging’ from the internet work to stop them from getting to you, or are they able to reconnect to your computer and enforce an internet connection via WIFI against your will?
  • If your site has been hacked, how likely is it that your computer itself will be easily accessed through your site?
    • If easily accessed, how does that work?
  • Sent in by a listener:
