World of WordPress News and other interesting WordPress related posts:

WordPressfor iOS just got a big update as promised at Wordcamp San Francisco last week. It is a big improvement over the old app, with more of a twitter or Facebook app feel to it now with swiping the different sections of editing capabilities. I am a bit dismayed at the lack of a true WYSIWYG interface, reverting to HTML as the default. Still, it is a big lift from where the App was previously.

I have my review of it here https://www.johnoverall.com/the-new-wordpress-ios-app/

Insights 1.0.5

The Lowdown:
You know sometimes the old is still pretty good..
While some of the functionality of this plugin is provided in the WordPress core when you wish to add a link to a post not all of what this plugin does is available.
This plugin provides a great easy way to find links within your site as well as off site links to places such as Wikipedia. just a keyword or two and you’re on your way. This is a simple plugin that you just install it adds a new window to your post dashboard and all you do is choose a keyword or two and choose where to find info your blog, images, videos, Wikipedia, Google, news, blogs or books. then it is just a click away to add the link.

WordPress Post Tabs 1.3.1

The Lowdown:
Ok here’s the deal I was converting over a website that was done in old html and php on some proprietary system and they had the one page that used something like tabs. So I thought I would see how that could be done in WordPress. I found this plugin to be a great way of adding tabs to the site it was simple with just a short code to wrap the content into and then a little css to make the header look the way I wanted it to and it worked pretty smooth.

MU Plugin

  • Requires WordPress Version: 3.0 or higher
  • Compatible up to: 3.1.4

  • WordPress.org Plugin Page »

The Lowdown:
Ok here is the deal I have a project I am working on which is deploying a MU platform and they wanted to have multiple blogs but they all need to conform to the master one. So I needed a simple way to duplicate the master blog and of course I do what i always do and that is find a great plugin to solve the problem. This plugin is great for duplicating just about everything and a couple of unique settings but it was missing the one main thing I wanted and that was the ability to duplicate the main site menu since it will be shared across all 30 sub blogs I did not want to manually create it that many times. All in all pretty great though.. Although I have found a premium plugin that might do the task I will let you know about it as soon as I install and test it.

https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/div-layer-editor/

Requires: 3.0 or higher
Compatible up to: 3.3.2
Last Updated: 2012-6-7

This is the plugin for making changes to your themes. Edit any WordPress theme from the front of your website. Just click on a part of your website to edit it. Then save different versions of your themes as child themes.

Marcus’ Take:  This is a very interesting plugin that can be toggled off and on with the admin bar. When enabled, you can hover over different sections and components of your site and literally click to edit the CSS of that particular section. It lets you save different versions in case you screw something up or just want to run an A/B test. The issue I had was it didn’t always save with the changes I wanted every time. Pretty frustrating when you are in deep thought editing CSS and  you have to recreate that design ZEN all over again and try and remember what you just did. Looking forward to this being updated to have more horsepower or an alternate front-end CSS editing plugin.

E-mails the site owner if anyone reaches or attempts to login to the site. Also shows the user names they attempt to login with.

This is a Security focused plug-in, which will send an email to the Administrator of the WordPress site each time login page is reached.

If someone attempts to login, it will also send the user name they tried logging in with, as well as their IP address, User-Agent, Timestamp, and the Referral URL.

If you see multiple attempts to login at times you are not logged on to the site, this means someone is attempting to brute force their way into your site, and you should ban the offending IP address from your site. Especially if they are trying multiple names, or sending them rapidly, one after another.

Marcus’ Take: This is a great feature to check and see if there are hooligans trying to get in your site. Nice that it tells you the name they try and use as well.

 Facebook Page Photo Gallery 2.0.5

The Lowdown:

Ok in my quest to make my life easier and my clients life easier I have run into a problem with my favorite gallery plugin Nextgen.. So as I was looking for a replacement I came across this plugin. Here was my quandary, my client has employees doing the updates for their website and Facebook and other social connections. I realized that many times they all know how to use Facebook but have some difficulty learning something new like a photo gallery. So when I saw this I though hmm will it solve a couple issues. First the ability to get the photos to their website and next something easy for the employees to use. The only issue I ran into here was that you had to manually place the code for each individual album. They have a premium edition where you can fetch all albums and more but no ability to categorize.

I did come back to this one but bought the premium version and it solved all my issues except the automation maybe suggest that if it is even possible but it doe make handling the photo galleries easier.

FBAlbum for WordPress 1.0

The Lowdown:
Well when not happy with one try another so I decided to give this on a shot although it does require creating a Facebook app they are pretty easy to create especially since this past couple week has me creating several for Facebook integration of some sort or another. But alas this one was not to be either since it would only work with posts and only with personal albums what I was after was fan page albums.

Plugin-Check 0.1

Plugin Organizer 2.2.1

The Lowdown:
This is a great plugin for organizing the order in which your plugins load and run and the ability to even have them not load site-wide except on specific pages. This gives you total control over your plugins and if you’re having an issue with page load times or conflicts this may be your answer to curing that problem. You can arrange the plugin load on the plugin page by simply dragging and dropping the order. You can also arrange your plugins into groups and load by group. You can also selectively disable any plugin based on a specific url on your site. I may be delusional but I do believe my site loads a bit faster after I put this in there and played with the plugin load order a bit. If you use this let us know your experience..

You can now add passwords as many as you need on every protected page.
Why? Because you can protect page and give your client a personal password, not just a random password or everyone. If you are logged as admin or the page’s author, you won’t need to enter password. If you set a list of child pages, just change any password (parent page or any child) and all the password for the hierarchy will be updated!

Vitamin helps Google and other search engines to find all of your pages by robots.txt and sitemap files. It saves all information about images, styles or any other files, that was not found. If you enable fast 404 mode, you may speed up your site even if you have some problems on it.
Server cache is a mechanism for the temporary storage (caching) of HTML pages, to reduce server load and reduce loading lag. When somebody open your page, this page is sent to him. But there is also created a copy of it. When second visitor open same page, saved copy is send without slow rebuilding.

Browser cache is mechanism for the caching files like images in browser. If someone visit site, all images in design are saved into browser cache. Second visited page is loaded faster, because browser does not ask for images, that was loaded before. But it works only on better server or with Vitamin.

John’s  Rant:

Just some thoughts about never say never… I just relaunched my website with a cleaner easier to use interface and have added in a new email campaign system in the past I always opposed the off site mailing list providers mainly because I would lose a lot of control but I was recently brought back to a plugin I reviewed several episodes back and then sort of forgot about. So a quick shout to the guys at beAutomated Sean and Randy.. I was just about to go live with my site a couple of days ago and was listening to the podcast Your Website Engineer and catching up on episodes and happened to listen to one where he discussed with Sean and Randy about their plugin and it reminded me of all that it can do so I quickly revisited it and became a believer.. It looks like to can also use it for posts and pages include your own images and customize it in many ways.. You can also have specific categories auto expand, you can also set it to close any other open group when you open a new one. You can also exclude posts from showing based on age.

SEO friendly plugin that automatically parses links in content and forces a new window to be opened for external links.

WP Links is a SEO friendly external link handler to help with your on page SEO and increases your visitors time on site.
One of the ways you can increase your search engine ranking is by increasing the time a user spends browsing your website.
This plugin is intended to increase the time a user spends on your page by assisting you in HTML markup.
WP Links will scan your page for any external links and force links to open in a new tab.

Marcus’ Take: The plugin simply parses all links on your page on output and adds target=”_blank” to the anchor tag. Does the trick nicely and makes all external links open in a new window. Would be nice to have more options.

Adds shortcodes to easily create columns in your posts or pages.

Sometimes you just need to divide your page into different columns. With this plugin you just select a column shortcode and it will add the column to the page.

There are 9 different column widths available from which you can make all combinations:

  • half (1/2)
  • one third (1/3)
  • two third (2/3)
  • one fourth (1/4)
  • three fourth (3/4)
  • one fifth (1/5)
  • two fifth (2/5)
  • three fifth (3/5)
  • one sixth (1/6)

A preset stylesheet is included, which you can also overwrite to you liking in your theme’s stylesheet.

Marcus’ Take: This is a neat plugin that gives more column options than I’ve ever seen in any other column plugin. Great for that newspaper styling to your WordPress installation.

Gravity Forms RSS Add-On

Output Gravity Forms entries as an RSS feed on a per-form basis

Requires: 2.8 or higher
Compatible up to: 3.4.1
Last Updated: 2012-7-31

View all your Gravity Forms entries as an RSS feed

Generate RSS feeds for each Gravity Form form.

  • Go to Edit Forms
  • Click on Form Settings
  • Click on the Advanced tab
  • At the bottom of the Advanced tab, you will see a link “Go to RSS feed” – that’s the link!

You must save the form before the RSS feed will work

There’s some security, too.

In order to view the RSS feed, users will need to have the correct token (a kind of password). Without the correct token, the RSS feed will not work.

Marcus’ Take: Another great reason to use Gravity Forms. I really like the security aspect of this as well, making sure I have a token for security reasons. I actually tested this in Google Reader and it worked great.

ZigWidgetClass 0.3.2

The Lowdown:
Ok what I needed here was a specific instance of a text widget to get a css class without a lot of fuss, so after a quick search I found this plugin. This plugin worked out great and simple it was just a matter of adding the text widget and adding the class to the widget and then adjusting the class to what I wanted.

Pretty Link

The Lowdown:

What was happening here was I needed a way to track an off site URL that would get me some decent stats. So after looking around I came upon this plugin. I downloaded the free lite version and it worked out pretty nice although I had discovered it off the authors site or so it seems not sure so I asked.. I was not aware there was a pro version until after it was installed again as usual I have nothing against pro versions of plugins in fact I buy many of them. But I dislike it when it is not upfront that what they are describing in their post is a premium version and 3/4 of the plugin does not work until paid for. … So in its limited fashion it is pretty good probably better as pro but I am not purchasing it to track one link. I never did get a response from the developer…

Rating: 3 Dragons dropped to 2 for not being upfront.

upPrev Previous Post Animated Notification 1.4.0

The Lowdown:

This plugins I stumbled upon while looking for something else. What does it do well have you noticed those little boxes that load in the lower right hand corner showing another post on the site. Sort of like if you read the NY Times site and you see additional story box pop up. That is what this plugin does. You can set it to make the box appear after scrolling down the page from 0% to 100% although it is usually best to set it at about 75 to 90%. This plugin I added to what is to be my new theme as a way to promote additional info on my site to visitors. You can also customize what will appear in the box by using short code in your post although I think it can use some refinement in its use. Better yet have a way in the plugin to control what appears. at the moment all it does automatically is show the next posts in that particular category. However I still think it will be pretty useful.

From the author: @viljamis made an amazing jQuery slideshow plugin called ResponsiveSlides. you can find it at https://responsive-slides.viljamis.com/. From a responsive-web-design point of view it’s a fantastic, light-weight, easy-to-implement image slider (well, it’s a fader not technically a slider) that “just works”. I’ve turned up and just WordPress-ified it a bit.

Marcus’ Take: I needed a very small footprint for a mobile site that needed a slider. This was a great way to do it, with the plugin less than 1K of overall footprint, this one was what I ended up using.

WordPress 3.5 (tentative) scope coming together, release due December 5

**** Plugins Reviewed by John ****

Popularity Stats 0.0.8

The Lowdown:
Pretty simple and straight forward install and activate then check the setting on it and then look at the pretty graphs to see how your site is doing. The only issue I had was it seems to need jquery and was not loading it properly so I had to go and find something to manage my jquery. This however did not solve the issue guess it is simply too old so I had to file this one under the it was a good idea at the time.
Rating: Well since I tossed this none.. Or One..

White Label CMS 1.4.6

The Lowdown:
This is a pretty nice way of customizing your WordPress install from changing out the WordPress logo in the admin dashboard to hiding the unnecessary stuff for your clients like the nag bar when updates need to be done. You can add your own welcome panel for when your users login where you can supply contact info or a message. You can hide some dashboard panels as well as adding custom css for the admin area. You can also modify some menu items.

EU Cookie Law 1.0

The Lowdown:
I pretty much just stumbled across this and tough it might be useful for our European listeners or anyone else who would like to notify their visitors that they are being tracked by cookies. It seems a law went into effect in the European Union that says sites must let visitors know that cookies are being used and if they continue to use the site they agree to that. Simply install then customize the acceptance time and your own message and let her fly.

Compatible up to: 3.4.1
Last Updated: 2012-7-16

Drop Shadow Boxes provides an easy way to highlight important content on your posts and pages. Includes a shortcode builder with a preview so you can test your box before adding it. It will work on the latest versions of all browsers. Some older browsers may not display the shadows – but they will display the box with the content. Please see the following page for examples to see how it performs on your browser: https://www.stevenhenty.com/products/wordpress-plugins/drop-shadow-boxes/examples/

Instructions

The plugin itself doesn’t require any configuration. There isn’t a setting page, just a shortcode builder which you can access from the media toolbar while you’re editing the post/page by clicking on the box icon next to the upload/insert media button.

Shortcode Reference

If you prefer not to use the shortcode builder, or if you’d like to modify an existing drop shadow box here’s the shortcode reference guide.
Example usage:

Auto Image Resizer Lite

https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/the-auto-image-resizer
This Plugin reduces all uploaded images to the maximal used image dimensions of your WordPress website.

Requires: 3.3 or higher
Compatible up to: 3.5
Last Updated: 2012-7-14
Downloads: 260

The “Auto Image Resizer” is a state of the art WordPress Plugin which reduces your uploaded images to the maximal used image dimensions of your WordPress website.
If the uploaders (author, member, whoever) browsers supports html5, gears, flash or silverlight the images will be resized directly on the client otherwise the server will do that. So the plugin works in every case regardless of the clients browser or OS

Marcus’ Take: This really helped out with a graphic intense client site that had a lot of scaled up images embedded as mere thumbs in a post. This plugin scaled the size of everything, resizing to a more manageable and load-worthy image.

Now I have a question.
I would like to create my own webpage as much as possible as I am very curious how it’s done and I love to be creative. My webpage is for my photography business and that’s where I have a question.
Could you recommend certain Themes and/or plugins which are a must? Perhaps also Twitter/FB/G+/P etc Widgets. And how can I post something on my blog which then is automatically pushed to my FB/G+/Twitter accounts?
Thanx a lot for your support. And again I love the show. But not Diablo :D

Ad Injection 1.2.0.15

The lowdown:
This plugin is a pretty nice way of adding Google ads to your website. the only issue i had was in the installation and configuration of the plugin. It required some deciphering to understand how to place all the code and setting up how many ads would; appear and when. All in all a pretty good plugin though once you figure out the installations of it all. I do like the way you can float the ads left or right but it has one flaw I think in that it will only allow you to float all or none. It does have some nice features for filtering the ads by ip, keyword, referrer such as search engines. You can also limit ads to appear only in certain categories or with certain authors. Lots of ways to limit ad showing.

JQuery Expanding Box 1

The Lowdown:
I needed a simple way to create expanding boxes for an FAQ page and instead of coding jquery I thought I would see if there was a plugin ready to go and here it it is. It turns out this is a very nice plugin for handling that on a couple of pages when you do not want to code everything. It uses short codes to handle the placement of the expansion of content and you can format it in any way you like. All in all a nice little plugin. It did require a small bit to understand the full use of the short codes but they do offer you some starter samples to get you going.

Wordfence Security 3.0.8

The Lowdown:
This plugin was introduced to me by a client who had it recommended to him after his site was hacked. I have now installed it on several sites and am finding it pretty useful. It has a premium version that will scan your plugin files and theme files against the repository. It does scan the core files against the repository it will send you alerts and it even has some firewall rules you can implement. It will tell you if someone is trying to use your password retrieval page as well as lock out their IP address. It will look at live traffic and all in all this is a pretty nice security plugin.

A WordPress plugin/Dashboard Widget that allows you to connect to any database and edit the contents.

This plugin is a dashboard widget to allow you to connect to any MySQL database of your choice (as long as your hosting allows) and search, edit, add and delete records in an easy to use interface. Ideal if you have built a site referencing another database and you want to allow other editors/administrators of the site to alter, update, delete, add and correct entries.

Marcus’ Take: A really great platform for the do it all webmaster. This lets you edit any database that you have credentials for. I was searching for a plugin that I could edit my ad server output and found this as a result. It gave me everything I asked for and more.

Replace Featured Image with Video is a simple plugin to replace the featured image in your wordpress post or page with a video. Supports Youtube, Dailymotion, Vimeo and many other sites that provide embedd code.. just don’t forget to edit the embedd code to the size of your featured image. BONUS: This plugin will override any existing featured image so removal or deletion is not necessary.

Marcus’ Take: In a nutshell, this will replace the featured image in your wordpress website with a video. I have been looking for a way to add videos into a theme automatically, as I would have embedded images from the featured images inserted dynamically. This cross-theme solution was my lazy way out of programming the entire theme core over.

Simple wordpress plugin that embeds a counter in your blog and shows the number of visits your website’s pages and posts has. Enables you to display how many times a post/page had been viewed.

Marcus’ Take: Simple and easy way to add a counter on your posts for popularity reasons. I sought this out for a client project that needed an old school counter. This was an easy way to get the counter embedded without going through a third party counter source.

Scripts n Styles 3.2

The Lowdown:
While polishing off a major project I ran into an issue that I hoped would have a plugin solution instead of having to go into the css one more time. The problem was needing to make a custom on a couple of posts but only for the text sure easy enough to do in css but hey I am the plugin guy after all. So I went looking and this is what I found.
Now I had high hopes but it turns out I was not able to focus this on a per post basis so I had to go back to the css to write what I wanted but it does have some great potential for site-wide css and scripts and it has something interesting called hoops that may come in handy. It allows an admin to allow certain html usage that is often stripped out by WordPress to prevent less leveled users from messing thins up. Plus a few other tools that may be fun.

Well scratch all that just as I was about to toss i discovered how to make it work and it is pretty sweet how it applied something to a specific page. Seems that I almost the box on the post/page that allows you to enter something for that specific post experiment with some other scripts and wow they hit it out of the park here I think what a time save when you only need to customize a single page or two.

WP-Cufon 1.6.10

The Lowdown:
So you need some custom fonts and you cant find what you want at Google fonts or fonts.com or any other place this may be your solution. Well you need to go here and convert your font https://cufon.shoqolate.com/generate/ then install this plugin and upload a couple files to your site. In particular you need to upload the font you just turned into a .js script. Setting and assigning it is pretty much the same as any font you can either assign by main body types ie H1 or p tags or assign to specific spots via custom css using the plugin before. I did find this one a bit more work to use that other ways I have talked about in the past for webfonts.

Ride em cowboy>>>>>>>>>>Self Promotion From John an Marcus<<<<<<<<<<<<

Johns WordPress training classes starting soon, almost ready with seminars online training and for those in Victoria classes that will starting on a regular basis here… As well as WordPress Emergency WordPress support you know when you see the ever favorite White Screen of Death. Marcus Offer SEO listen for details.

John’s  Rant:

I have recently started seeing some real pain in the ass emails for what I consider stupid shit. I received an email this past week from some twit who was asking me to remove some very old links from an old website. Seems once upon a time I had used articles from a article directory on a niche site I built a couple of years back. Now that Google is getting all the paranoid to help clean up the web these folks who had done some of their marketing via these articles are scanning the web and making lame threats to get folks to remove the links like this but monkey who had sent me this email. I did remove his content but I also sent him a worded email about how you can get better results by asking and not making false threats like a lawsuit because I was linking to his site. Seems I was correct in remembering that the courts have upheld linking to a website that is publicly available cannot be controlled. After all this it does dawn on me that if you work for the dark side you have some major opportunities to destroy your competition through negative SEO though.

Now that that fun is over on the plus side I have been pretty busy this week seems when it rains it pours. Just as I thought I had hit a wall of slowdown lots of great folks started asking for some work to be done on their sites. Good timing also as I am about to launch a new major project I was wondering if I would be bored for a few days but no longer The work is lining up again thanks everyone and a few of you even listen to the show so thanks.

Also I have been seeing an increase in articles about how you should avoid Free WordPress themes. Something to think about..

Plus the spammers of domain sales have hit an all time low.. I own a domain called tamethewildweb.com which is due for renewal and they are trying to sell me my own domain name at a reasonable price…

Also as a warning to others if you are planning to move to a new host don’t tell the old one until you move. Ran into an issue helping a client move this week when as a nice guy he told the old host he was planning to move and they lock his account before we could get al his files and now he has to get them to unlock everything thus delaying the move.

Some notes on Managewp.com seems it is actually pretty nice, listen to the show for all the details. I had 30 min before show so set it up and configured 5 sites This is something I think would be great if you have similar sites, but it does have the ability to control site by site. Plus you can clean your database as well as spam comments plus deal with comments for approval.
Something interesting, on one site it did the update and crashed then when I did the plugins it righted itself. Probably because I did WordPress update before plugins but because I was doing plugins from this dashboard I was not locked out until I fixed issue

Plus 3.4 downloads now over 3mil

Shout Outs:

Oliver over in Denmark  –Thanks for the great email encouragement and comments… Look forward to you dropping us a Speakpipe message.. You will be getting a response to your questions shortly and next show I’ll share with rest of listeners.

SEO Facebook Comment 1.4.5.1

The Lowdown:
This is a pretty nice facebook integration of your comments, it still leaves all you original comments in place as well as your regular commenting system. You do have to go and create a Facebook app to use it but that it not that difficult to accomplish. I found the setup to be pretty straight forward. From what the author says this is different in that is plus facebook to your database and then displays it all and not just in an iframe so you will get the seo benefit of the comments. It also give the commenter the option to post to facebook or not, plus when making a comment if you manage many pages you can choose who to be when creating the comment.

And The Winner Is… 1.1.1

The Lowdown:
So I had a client that wanted to run a contest where they would read about it in print then have to go to the website and answer a trivia question from the print publication and then get entered to win a prize. They would get entered right or wrong but they still wanted to direct them. I have come up with a solution involving Gravity forms but they discovered this plugin and asked me to use it instead so here is my impression of it.

What it is designed to do is change any post into a contest where all the comments become entries and then the plugin will do a random selection of the winner at the end date of contest. Set up is easy It seems to work out ok and has an easy to select the winner so we are running it and if I run into any issues will report back.

Content Scheduler 0.9.8

The lowdown:

I have actually been using this plugin on another client’s site for sometime now and had to use it again for the one above. The reason of course was to stop publishing of the contest post without having to get in there and remember to do that in case they cannot get in and select winner on the end date and had to come in a couple days late.  I have found this to be working pretty nicely and does a nice job of stopping posts publication either by making it a draft or private.

Title Split Testing for WordPress

https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/title-split-testing-for-wordpress/

If your headline sucks, no one will read your article. Split test titles to find out which ones attract the most readers.

Newspaper editors have known for generations that a great headline sells papers. If the headline sucks, then it doesn’t matter how good the rest of the article is, because no one will read it.
Top newspapers like The Huffington Post now apply this principle to their online publications by testing different headlines for the same story, live on their website.
However, if your not a multi-million dollar news corporation, you can’t afford to develop proprietary testing systems. That’s why we created the Title Split Testing Plugin for WordPress so that you can do the same simple tests for FREE.
It enables you to create a number of different titles for each article, and randomly display different titles to different users to find out which title achieves the highest click-thorugh rates. After a few hours of testing you can then select the best title to be shown to all visitors. It also helps you to learn what type of titles get the best reaction from your readers. Do they like short titles or long titles, funny titles or serious titles. Take the guess work out of your article titles and use this plugin to measure real user behaviour.

Marcus’ Take: This is a great and simple way to split test your titles to see which is the most compelling from a traffic and conversion standpoint.

Maintenance Checklist
https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/maintenance-checklist/

Introduction

When supporting WordPress websites, a necessary evil is the tedious tasks of on-going maintenance. Tasks that fall under on-going maintenance are backups, spam & trash comment removal, database optimization, and much more.
What Maintenance Checklist provides is an easy to understand checklist for things that need to be completed on your WordPress site. These tasks will keep your WordPress website running at optimal performance.

Who can benefit from this plugin

Bloggers
With the default installation providing you a checklist of crucial tasks, you can see what needs to be done for your blog to keep it running perfectly. All you need to do is check off the task once you completed it.
Developers
With the “Add Task” feature, you can add tasks for tracking. You may have tons of sites to maintain with each site having special maintenance needs. Just add the task to that site, choose how often it needs to be done, and the Maintenance Checklist Plugin will remind you to do it.

Features

  • Track tasks and check them off when completed.
  • Automatic un-check when task needs to be completed.
  • Add custom tasks for tracking.
  • Delete any tasks.
  • The “Feel Good Engine”. When all tasks have been completed, we make you feel good
  • for all your hard work!

Marcus’ Take: great way to centralize your tasks. Would be a lot better if this could output or feed from RSS, giving you a full scope of your tasks on all sites.

https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wp-retina-2x/

This plugin creates the image files required by the Retina (high-DPI) displays and it displays them to your visitors accordingly. Your website will now look beautiful and smooth on every device.

In the case the resolution of the original images are not high enough, you will see a warning in the Media Library where you will be able to re-upload bigger images.
It handles two different methods (for now) to serves the images to your visitors. Pick the one that works best with your hosting and environment.

Marcus’ Take: Really cool “developing technology” that you might want to try with your retina display devices.

Thanks to Stefan:
As always it was a pleasure to me to listen to your show ! Gordon Drayson asked for a plugin to update many WP installations. I have programmed a bot for that “job”. A video can be seen on https://www.dont-call-it-seo.com/wordpress-updater-bot (unfortunately in german)

Smart Slug 1.4.1

The Lowdown:
Simple install and activate no settings all it does is remove the simple words like and, to, the from your slug when it is created. a very nice and lazy plugin. It does have an expandable list of words you can add to or take away from.
Adds a nice piece to SEO I do believe. Just a simple lazy plugin.
Ranking 4 Dragons.

WP E-commerce Expanding Categories 0.1.1

The Lowdown:
Ok this is a great addition to any wp e-commerce install if you have multiple categories and subcategories and even sub-sub categories. What it does is collapse the widget listing in your sidebar and allow for it to be expanded at a click. you know the old collapsible menus. This is a nice feature and was badly needed for my clients site which and a couple dozen sub and sub-sub cats and made a very ugly side bar menu.

Advanced Access Manager 1.6.6

The Lowdown:
This is a pretty robust access manager plugin. I was in need of such a device to allow subscribers access to one certain part of the site but it can also be used to limit access by other roles to areas of the site you do not want them to be. I did have some difficulty in configuring one site and getting to properly add a new role and limit what I wanted to limit. In the end I did get it to work but I did have to do a little work on understanding the roles and which plugins get what role when installed and and figuring out how to access some roles for limitation. While I liked this plugin I am still on the lookout for something more simple to use.

Site PIN
https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/site-pin/

Prevent careless visitors by locking your site down with a PIN

Requires: 3.0 or higher
Compatible up to: 3.3.2
Last Updated: 2012-6-18
Downloads: 16
Author: Marcus Downing

Whenever a site is under development, or its content should remain private, you want to prevent to general public from reading it – whether deliberately or by accident.

A common way to do this is with HTTP authorization, but this has some problems and is often confusing for the viewer/client.

Site PIN solves these problems by replacing authorization with a simple PIN. This has the following advantages:

• Everybody knows what a PIN is, and it’s clearly not the same as a password.
• Logging into WordPress bypasses the PIN, so you can’t lock yourself out
• It’s just a WordPress plugin, so no server configuration is necessary.
• You can change or remove the PIN from WordPress admin.

Marcus’ Take: This is a really quick way to get your clients to see a stage site that may be in development without all the crazy setup of HTTP authorization by just using a PIN. Perfect solution for what I was looking for in a client stage site.

Twitter Cards
https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/twitter-cards/

Twitter cards make it possible for you to attach media experiences to Tweets that link to your content. Simply add a few lines of HTML to your webpages, and users who Tweet links to your content will have a “card” added to the Tweet that’s visible to all of their followers.
As a developer, Twitter cards can…

  • Give you control of how your content is displayed with Tweets
  • Drive traffic to your site
  • Increase the number of people following your Twitter accounts through content attribution

.
Marcus’ Take:
This is a really cool plugin that lets you take advantage of twitter in a whole new way. I highly recommend this plugin for just about everyone who integrates twitter into their site’s user experience.

John’s Rant

A Ramble about what a great place Victoria is , Social Media Camp Victoria and of course Diablo3. The sad state of the top 5 or 7 or 10 plugins depending on what article you read. Seems they all have the same thing to say. Never going outside the box. Guess I will be doing my article soon of the real top five or actually 15 that I put on every site. Or even an up and coming top list of plugin failures.

Golden Horseshoe Up my Yohoo**** Plugins Reviewed by John ****

WP AdCenter (Premium Plugin)
The Plugin site at WPAdcenter.com
The Authors Site https://kooc.co.uk/ where they have a few other plugins

The Lowdown:
After install head over to its menu The only setting to make is paypal address seems it does not offer the sandbox top bad. The you need to set up your zones, packages and campaigns. Then set up at least one advertiser so you can test it out. The one problem I ran into was lack of documentation until I went duh!! Check the zip folder for info and there is a link to complete online documentation on how to use it. It uses widgets to place your ad block a nice feature or get the code and place that. It is either php code or short code nice feature.
Adding the ads was pretty easy after that and so was setting up the payment page now just sit back and let the cash roll in.

I have a coupe plugins from the same authors Sean & Randy over at beAutomated.com
First is one that seem like allot of fun more than anything else.
beCounted 1.0.2

The Lowdown:
Ok what can I say it can also be used for serious stats presentation but I found it to be much more for fun than anything else. simply install activate and add your stats and credit line. It can be good fun.

Now onto a serious note for a plugin
Benchmark Email Lite 2.3
Last updated June 5th
Author: beAutomated

The Lowdown:
First you will need an account at Benchmark email https://benchmarkemail.com wwhere you get a 30 day free trial after that it costs not sure how much did not examin thier services.
I had a little trouble locating my API key at benchmark but the instructions from the plugin where pretty good only missing one line look for small link to generate your API key.
I do like the one feature I noticed in tier plug ins and that is to limit what page to show it on.
It works very nice and if you have more than one list you choose it when setting up the widget plus a couple other base settings. All in all pretty nice plugin that has a widget that conforms to your theme quite nicely.  And if you want to place elsewhere they have the code ready to go for you. And you can send any post as an email right from the posts edit area. Where you can schedule it or send now. It send a pretty nice email but I would want to edit up what it send I am sure that can be done somewhere.

And finally one for WP e-commerce since I have recently completed that site I thought I would start sharing the plugins used
WPEC Personalize

The Lowdown:
Ok this plugin is pretty simple in essence of course you need wp e-commerce installed before you can use this. Ok here is the deal in wpec you can set a spot for your clients to personalize the product but it is simple one big text box. what this plugin does is allow you to create single line or text box and even double up on them and to determine which products they go to. This is great like this store which is an embroidery shop and sells things like name badges and sometimes it is one name other times it is multiple names. All in all pretty good.

The Multi Use Tool**** Plugins Reviewed by Marcus ****

wpTextResize

Requires: 3.2 or higher
Compatible up to: 3.3.2
Last Updated: 2012-6-4

wpTextResizeControls is an easy to use template tag to generate Increase, Decrease, reset font size controls for body text on a WordPress site. Just add wpTextResizeControls(0) to your template for the controls to be automatically styled, or wpTextResizeControls(1) to manually style. When manually styling, wpTextResizeControls is the container, and increaseFont, resetFont, and decreaseFont are all anchors you can target.

Marcus’ Take: This was a real easy plugin to use when trying to redesign an old client site that only needed tweaks with the typestyles. Rather than mess with the entire CSS and stylesheet structure, I opted to use this plugin instead. It took a few minutes to clear the cache and make sure the plgin qas working, but it did it’s job well and works just as promised.

This plugin add a new metabox in posts, pages and custom post type. In this metabox you can insert name of users (comma-separed) enabled to view it. If a post haven’t users enabled and it has a parent, it is enabled for users for parent posts and pages.

Marcus’ Take: This was the perfect solution for an intranet site I was working with that was limited on the specific user TYPES that I would use to read a post. This let me break it down into individual teams instead. This let me call out individual people to see a particular post. Quite a nifty advancement.
