Useful Facebook Comments on your WordPress Website

Add useful Facebook comments to your WordPress Website

Lets face it getting people to comment can be a challenge especially with all the many hurdles they face just to place a comment you know what I am talking about such as the ever favorite ReCaptcha which 7 out of 10 time you cannot read and have to reload until you finally get one you can read or those simple question such as what is the colour of the sky? An even then once you place the answer something goes wrong and it does not accept it and then those times when you go through all that get the response wrong and it wipe out that wonderful 2 paragraph though you just tried to post…
There has been an option for some time to allow comments via Facebook but it had many issues the biggest of which was you lose all the SEO value provided by those comments and they stayed on Facebook and you lost out…

Well now you can avoid all that in one simple step by allowing your visitors to leave comments on your WordPress website using their most used social program Facebook wit his great plugin. The problems with using facebook for comments have been overcome in this plugins as it takes those comments down from facebook and places them into your database before displaying them on your site as well as taking all comments on your site and moving them up to Facebook.

Create useful Facebook Comments on your site with:

The plugin you want here is called:
SEO Facebook Comment 1.4.5.1

This plugin is fantastic in how it handles Facebook comments on both your website and on facebook, it even keeps the nice threaded look for you. Installing it is a breeze and I walk you though that below.

You can even keep your old commenting system & comments on the site if you like or remove them completely.

Installing this plugin take a few min but if you follow along it will be done in not time:

First: Go to your admin dashboard and under the plugins menu click on add new then search for SEO Facebook Comment

Now you need to install it and then activate it…. The look for a new menu item in the left called SEO facebook and click on it.. Once open you will get this area…

Here they have a convenient link for you to go to and create your Facebook App but in case you miss it here it is again…. http://www.plulz.com/how-to-create-a-facebook-app Make sure you are logged into the facebook account you want to create this app for… I will not duplicate their instructions as they are pretty comprehensive and simple… But if you like to go off on your own here is the link to facebook developers to create the app.. https://developers.facebook.com/apps

Once you have created the app which take all of about 5 min even if you have not yet registered as a developer then you need to locate the specific user ID for the Facebook page you want to share comments with.. Again they have a convient link to locate your ID but incase you miss it here is is again … http://www.plulz.com/how-to-get-my-facebook-user-id  or again if you want to head off on your own head here to get your Facebook user ID https://developers.facebook.com/tools/explorer/

Once all this is completed then you need to set a couple simple steps such as what width you want the comment box to be and the auto approve and if you want to hide the default commenting system or not.. Once that is done simply look at any post on your site to see how it look and you’re all done.

So now you can enjoy having your visitors who use Facebook make simple comments on your site and you still get all the SEO benefits and more..

John’s & Marcus Rant

Today’s recording (November 1st) marks the one year anniversary of Marcus co-hosting the show! Here’s to many more in the future!

Shout Outs:

Thank you to everyone who has continued to give us high ratings and praise on iTunes by providing a review, especially in the last few weeks. We really appreciate the support and are quite ecstatic that there are thousands of you out there that get great benefit from the content that we create. Keep the reviews coming! It helps the show to rank better within iTunes and let’s new WP enthusiasts know about the show with more prominence.

Listener Feedback / Audio Clips

Lyria looking for a sidebar plugin to subscribe to future posts and not use feedburner.

-You may want to check out Newsletter, a plugin that we’ve previously discussed on the show. (http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/newsletter/) It allows you to do both single and double opt-in newsletter subscriptions without the need of a third party service. It also handles unsubscribe requests automatically.

-Additionally there’s a plugin called “Easy Automatic Newsletter Lite” (http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/easy-automatic-newsletter/) that has many of the same functionality points and has added benefits of controlling the frequency in which new posts go out in newsletter form.

Andrew McGivern with some great show feedback and wants to know of a plugin to sync comments from one site to another..

-This is a tough one Andrew, as you would have to share the same SQL user table between two installations, not to mention the fact that you would have duplicate content on two different sites, possibly negating any positive gains that this functionality would give you. You bring up an interesting point in using Facebook, in which you could use Alex King’s new SOCIAL plugin (http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/social/) to act as a conduit for cross-pollinating your comments between WP and Facebook and Twitter.

Another suggestion is to try the premium plugin “WP-ROBOT” (http://marcuscouch.com/wprobot) as a way to grab both posts and comments and post to another WP installation, though it may not have the ability to continually monitor each post individually and update them one by one. Version 4 of WP Robot was just released with a ton of new features, but Marcus has not yet had the opportunity to review it in full to test it’s full capabilities and limitations.

You may want to try the FaceBook SEO plugin for comments and palce it on both sites with same app code. It was reviewed back a few episodes by me. http://www.johnoverall.com/retina-display-task-management-content-comments-and-more-on-episode-75-wordpress-plugins-a-to-z/

http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/seo-facebook-comments/

David from Perth, Australia has a new podcasting project using WordPress and is looking for a solution to facilitate a directory that podcasters can use to submit their own podcast information.

-Marcus suggests using DirectoryPress theme, which you can buy at http://marcuscouch.com/directorypress. (This is an affiliate link that helps to support your hosts)
The theme features both free and paid options for adding entries into the directory, robust child themes, payment gateways and plenty of methods in which to import mass content from CSV or other means. I love using these premiumpress themes not only for their functionality and free lifetime upgrades, but also for the amazing community and support forums that go along with it.

WP – Social Stats

http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wpsocialstats/

Wpsocialstats is a social analytics tool that tracks the performance of your site at Facebook, Twitter, Google+, Pinterest, LinkedIn and Stumbleupon.

Requires: 2.6 or higher
Compatible up to: 3.4.2
Last Updated: 2012-10-3
Downloads: 561
WP Social Stats is a social analytics plugin that tracks the performance of your blog or website posts on social networks. People love to share great content with their friends on social networks, but do you know which network is the most popular for your blog/website or what type of blog posts are shared the most? WPSocialstats helps you answer these questions so you focus on creating great content, the key to success for any blog or website.

With WP Social Stats you can:

  • Track number of times a post is shared on Facebook, Twitter, Google+ , Pinterest, LinkedIn and Stumbleupon
  • Data is presented in a table view, easy to read and analyze
  • Sort results per category or tag and see which type of posts are performing the best
  • Sort results per month
  • Track performance of your blog or website pages as well

Marcus’ Take:
While there are numerous ways to add and propagate social likes and tweets, there is often a large gap in how to associate that data within WordPress itself from a statistical standpoint. This plugin bridges the gap, allowing you to see sharing statistics for your posts directly in the WordPress dashboard. I found this to be a great improvement in determining what posts “go viral” and also identifying what users are sharing your post content online.

Safe Mode

http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/safe-mode

Makes it possible to enable safe mode for WordPress. In safe mode, plugins will not be loaded and the default theme (if installed) will be activated.

Requires: 3.0.1 or higher
Compatible up to: 3.4.2
Last Updated: 2012-10-19
Downloads: 73

This plugin enables safe mode for WordPress. This means:

  • No plugins will be loaded.
  • A default theme will be temporarily activated (if it is installed).

Why is this useful?

Whenever something’s wrong with a WordPress site, the first rule of thumb is to disable plugins and possibly revert to the default theme. Depending on the nature of the error, that is not always an option. The back end (dashboard) may also be down, you may not have FTP access to manually disable plugins or themes and so on.

Enter Safe Mode. Safe Mode will completely disable all plugins and the active theme temporarily for a single page view – ultimately enabling you to log in and remove the offending plugin. (This is not guaranteed to work in all scenarios, please read the disclaimer)

How does it work?

If your site crashes due to an upsetting plugin or theme, all you have to do is add a querystring parameter to the URL. That will temporarily disable all plugins for that single page view, as well as temporarily activate a default theme if such is installed.
Let’s say you’re the owner of http://www.example.com. To enable safe mode for one particular page, you add this to the URL: “?safe_mode=1”.
Bear in mind that you have to do this for every view. The querystring parameter isn’t carried on automatically. So, for instance:

When you go to plugin management, all plugins will seem to be deactivated (due to the way Safe Mode works), but you’ll still be able to explicitly deactivate each plugin. Just use the “Deactivate (safe mode)” option.

What is default themes?

By default theme, I’m referring to either Twenty Twelve, Twenty Eleven or Twenty Ten.
The plugin checks if any of these themes are installed (in that order), and if so, activates the first theme it encounters. Thus I highly recommend that you keep one of those themes installed at all times. If you don’t, safe mode will keep your current active theme, and that theme may just be the offender – leaving safe mode useless. Keep this in mind.

Marcus’ Take: There are many times in which a plugin can interact negatively. These can include WordPress core version updates, plugin updates, theme updates or any other scenario in which the code changes over time. When this happens, there is often a conflict which can literally stop a site in it’s tracks. This plugin helps to keep your site in “safe mode” with a simple trailing string on your URL, which lets you get to the root of the problem without having your site completely dead. It’s an easy way to get the site back up again if problems ever come up that seem to be out of your control.

EasyGram

Simply install the plugin on your WordPress site, activate and authorize your account connection to Instagram and then start importing your photos and creating galleries.

Where can I use it?
Easygram can be used with any WordPress install. As long as you have a site and as long as you have WordPress then Easygram will work for you.
Auto-import all your Instagram photos
With the above setup done, you can simply start creating your galleries using Easygram’s auto-import feature. Click the Instagram tab and you’ll be able to see your Instagram photos which you’ve taken.
Select Multiple Photos at a Time
Select multiple photos and include as many as you like in your galleries.

Marcus’ Take: This is an outstanding bridge built to let you access your mobile photos directly in your WordPress Media Gallery. It adds an “Instagram” section of your Media Gallery, allowing you to use the images in your post with just a few clicks.

You can also throttle usage when someone or a bot access the site too fast. It also will examine the plugins and theme and compare them to the files at the wordpress repository. Ultimate TinyMCE 3.3

The Lowdown

While I have not really been for for extending the editor inside WordPress I had run into this several time when working on client sites and about a month ago I added this plugin to my site because I need a couple things. I needed a simple way to add anchor tags and wanted to add hr bars to my posts. Instead of manually writing them into the posts I thought I would try this plugin to add it to the editor. Well along the way I discovered many of the other options of this plugin including the ability to add sub and superscripts, insert layers and more functional link inserter and editor and more. If you need to expand your posts try this plugin. Keep in mind it does require some setup but worth the time.

Social Login, Social Sharing & Social Commenting, with User Profile Data 3.1

The Lowdown:
If you have a site that you have people logging in for whatever reason and regularly signing up on your site then this is your plugin to simplify that process. It allows you to setup logging in via Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin, Google plus and more. It also adds social sharing buttons and allows visitors to share comments via their social logins instead of having to create one locally. One great part is it also creates a local account for them by sending them an optin email, in this way you can get them added to an email list or more depending on your site needs. It does require some setup for the different choices you make. well worth the time to setup and an excellent way to offer simple login to your website that is quick and secure.

This plugin will allow you to automatically show previews of external websites when a user hovers over a link in your posts. It’s designed to work “out-of-the-box” and no changes should be needed on your part to make it work. However, if you are familiar with CSS, you can apply “link previews” to links in other places in WordPress site by specifying any CSS selector that you want.

Marcus’ Take: This is a nice plugin to add some additional style to your site when displaying external links. It does run on the Web Shrinker platform, which is a paid service at a certain level of queries.

CP Reservation Calendar

Requires: 3.0.5 or higher
Compatible up to: 3.4.2
Last Updated: 2012-10-10

CP Reservation Calendar is a WordPress plugin which allows your website visitors to select dates – ex: check-in and check-out dates – for a reservation.
This calendar can be used for hotel bookings, tour bookings, car rentals, office rentals, jewels rentals, cellphone rentals, etc. It’s integrated with Paypal for receiving the reservation payments and has many other features(details below).

It can be configured in two modes: “complete day” or “partial day” bookings. Complete day means that the first and the last days booked are charged as full days while Partial Day means that they are charged as half-days only. Partial Day system is widely used by hotels and car rental systems: the customer is charged half a daily rate for both the arrival/pick-up day and the departure/drop-off day, thereby matching the number of nights actually spent in the hotel or the 24 hour days using the service.

Marcus’ Take: This is a fantastic reservation and booking system that can accept payments ahead of time. Awesome for tech support help, consultations, design, or whatever you want to use it for. Even something like hair salons or restaurants.

  • Will retrieve existing URL if one has already been created.
  • Click count appears on post menu
  • Available for standard posts and custom post types.
  • Optional filter for wp_shortlink
  • Built in cron job will fetch updated click counts every hour.

Marcus’ Take: Great replacement for URLs in the same manner as Pretty link, but under the YOURLS platform. Limited in what it can do to just the URL creation. It will not do keyword shortcuts or dynamic URL replacement though. This is a simple, one function URL shortener.

Bottom 3 plugins from the popular list # 649, 50 and 51 well it was going to be any until I realized that were either broken or of no real value to general users so I pulled 3 random ones from popular, sometimes I forget how hard it is to find a plugin when you do not have a goal wow there is some crap out there

The Bar Steward 1.2

The lowdown:
A nice simple way to clean up your tool bar of unwanted and unneeded links added by the following plugins.

  • Yoast WordPress SEO
  • CDN Synch Tool
  • NextGen Gallery
  • BackWPup
  • Social Metrics
  • Ultimate Security Checker

It works nice and simple and lazy

All in One Webmaster 8.0.0

The lowdown
This is an all in one place to add your different codes for the webmaster tools accounts out there from Google, Bing, Alexa, Blog catalog and Facebook insights. As well as add you analytics codes and quickcodes to the header or footer and to do manual submission of your site. While I do not see a use for it myself since I have other plugins already doing these functions someone else may find this useful

Exploit Scanner 1.3.1

The lowdown

This plugin is to help you find any issues on your website  and the posts and comments tables of your database for anything suspicious. It also examines your list of active plugins for unusual filenames. Simply upload and run a scan after a fe min it will tell you if you any issues you need to address. Keep in mind the final readout is not always bad stuff but what it sees as possible, it found several things on my test site that are known to be good.

No Image Link

http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/no-image-link/

Requires: 3.0.1 or higher
Compatible up to: 3.4.2
Last Updated: 2012-10-9

Defaults the Image Link option when adding a photo to none.

Marcus’ Take: This is a lazy plugin. Simple and easy to use. Install, activate and no longer be hassled by images that automatically link to themselves.

GEO Redirector

http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/geo-redirector/

This plugin will allow you to redirect your URLs according to the visitors geographical location. And you can manage redirect the visitor given radius inside or outside a specific area.

Requires: 3.0.1 or higher
Compatible up to: 3.4.2
Last Updated: 2012-10-7
Downloads: 89

Marcus’ Take: An outstanding plugin who’s time has come. This allows you to redirect to a specific landing page or content area based on where the visitor is from. Remember though, sometimes a viewers IP address might vary, depending on who their Internet service provider is. This literally provides you with a map and allows you to select the radius around that area and a destination URL to send them to. Transversely, you can also choose a specific radius and if they are NOT in the radius, it sends them to a URL of your choice as well.

Web Screenshots

http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/web-screenshots/

Displays Thumbnails of a given URL usings wordpress.com inofficial API. Use Shortcode [webscreenshot] with url and some optional params.

Requires: 3.0 or higher
Compatible up to: 3.4.2
Last Updated: 2012-10-5
Downloads: 41

Marcus’ Take: Most recently, I was involved in an affiliate project with one of the listeners of the show. We had over 300 different affiliate merchant sites to screenshot, edit, scale and re-upload. It has taken WEEKS to get done. This plugin would have saved us ALL of that work with a simple shortcode. You simply add the shortcode with the URL and the size (default is 250×250) and WordPress does it’s magic. The process is handled through the WP API, which is very unique to these types of plugins. Combined with a caching plugin, this is a very cool development in how WordPress can handle and manipulate real time data from other sites. The only drawback that I found was the lack of a custom ALT tag, which I’ve already informed the developer about.

This seemed like a interesting new way to track a to do list of things I need to do on several websites that need to be completed or a new things come up for clients websites. Once you create a todo task you can then assign it to a person then choose the type of task and set a priority to fix it. And finally determine if it is still open or closed. It does not publish it to the front end. Going to give this a shot at entering tasks for a week and see how it goes..

I used to use this utility called “Time Trade” for setting up appointment requests. This is a similar tool in BookFresh. I will warn you, this is not an entirely free plugin, as it does work within the BookFresh.com system. But overall I found this to be of good value when you’re in the need to add a schedule or appointment request function to your WordPress installation.

Marcus’ Take: In my ever nearing quest for a cool site for my new video show, I needed to have a way to get a slider like feel but be automated so I did not have to regularly update all the time (as it’s a daily show). This plugin is a perfect solution for getting the best of both worlds. The video opens up in a lightbox format, which gives the viewer instant, 1 click access to viewing the video content.

Minimum Word Count

http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/minimum-word-count/

Requires: 3.0 or higher
Compatible up to: 3.4.2
Last Updated: 2012-10-1
Downloads: 48

This plugin allows you to set a minimum word count required to publish a post. You have the option to exempt administrators from this requirement. As part of this plugin, a “Word Count” column is added to the post listing pages. Also, on the post editing pages, the “Word Count” field just below the content box is now changed to “Live Word Count” and updated as you type. If the current post is below the minimum word count setting, the count will turn red.

Features

  • Require a minimum word count to publish a post
  • Option to allow administrators to publish below the minimum
  • Adds a Word Count column to post listing pages
  • Changes ‘Word Count’ to ‘Live Word Count’ on post edit pages

Marcus’ Take:
This is a great tool for SEO and content, as it sets the word count at whatever minimum you choose. I also used this on a client site to prevent the writer from “accidentally posting” their drafts or scratchpads of just a few lines of text. It happens. This plugin helps make sure that everything that goes out is of a good content length.

Social Toolbar 2.1

The Lowdown:
While the links here lead to the free version my review is on the paid version.. The free version seems to offer much of what the paid has minus a few special treats including more customizations than the other. So what did I find..
I used this on the redesign of a clients website One thing I really liked here was that you can control what pages it will display on or simply let it have the run of your site. It also has just about every social network you could want built right in all you need to do is add you link. And if thats not enough you can add custom ones. They also have some great training info built right into the plugin not that I used it since I tend to just dive right in unless I get stuck. I had no problem with this plugin and liked the many ways of adding social networks and customizing the bar at the bottom.
About the only thing I thought might be nice was to have a way for it to auto fade out unless it was moused over. Maybe after a few seconds fade out and become transparent .. Might not be possible but a nice thought.
Well all was great until I started testing the new site on IE and found that on the pages to display the bar the layout broke in a very bad way.. Have let developer know about issue maybe he can see why. Well when I went to fix this it was fine then about an hour later it was back must be something in my theme so I had to leave this as it was not necessary to launch the site but will come back to it.

While this is a beta of their pre release of a new paid pro version, I was checking to see how it improves over the last time I did this. What I found was that this plugin is easier to use than before they have made it easier to understand the cron that has to be placed in the system as well as adding a new wpcron for those who do not understand nor want to learn about proper cron jobs. The only thing I found I was wishing for was a easy way to import over the site sizeable database of users directly into this plugin. what I do like about it is that it automatically creates a newsletter based upon the content created in the past few days to month depending on the time you select. It is a much better newsletter going out than before but still has some limitations on the format of the newsletter. other than these two items I think it is a great plugin and make the job of sending newsletter easy and lazy. The author has taken under advisement the access to users and looking at adding it as a feature in next release

CMS Dashboard Commander
You can check it out here http://wppro.ca/cmscommand This is a bit more than a plugin and of all the multisite managers I have tested in the past couple of months I have found this one to be at the top of the list. The best part for me was the number of sites you can manage if you get in on the beta it starts with 50 and you can add to that with a few simple tweets.

Just install the plugin they provide and then start managing sites it again is a similar platform what looks to be a customized version of wordpress, and the bonus here is that if you happen to work with others such as Joomla/Drupla or phbb you can manage them here also so it is pretty complete in that aspect. It does a pretty nice job of updating all sites

You can also mass post to all sites if you like as well as do backups and even clone a site which I will test soon. This worked great

Quickly and easily access and install your favourite plugins from WordPress.org, right from your dashboard.

This is a simple plugin that adds “Favorites” to the plugin installation screen in WordPress. Simply enter your WordPress.org username (or even someone else’s) and see a list of favorite plugins that can be easily installed.

Marcus’ Take: FINALLY! A social component for those of us who use WordPress plugins right within WordPress. What can I say, this is something I’ve been looking for since the Favorite feature started in the repository. Though I would like to see further development, like the most popular user’s favorites, etc. But this rocks anyway. I love the fact that I can now set up a favorite list and pick and choose what I want on client sites, and even have the list available for new items that I find. This is a developers dream if you also use the repository frequently. If you prefer to just listen to John and I, there’s probably nothing to see here!

Marcus’ Take: This was an ideal plugin to hide a category I had for a client site that was based on testimonials. It would also be great for hiding the reposting of twitter posts, etc from the main feed and still allow for integrated archive functionality.

WordPress Helpers (Piklist framework)

http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wp-helpers/

Requires: 3.3.2 or higher

WordPress Helpers opens up the missing settings you wish were in WordPress.
This plugin requires Piklist.
With WordPress Helpers you can easily:

  • Take control of the WordPress Admin Bar… including “Howdy”.
  • Show ID’s on edit screens for Posts, Pages, Categories, Tags, Users, Media, Custom Post Types and Custom Taxonomies.
  • Disable the theme switcher.
  • Remove the “Screen Options” tab.
  • Hide Dashboard widgets.
  • Set the default Dashboard columns.

Writing

  • Set the default Post editor (Visual or HTML).
  • Totally disable the Visual Editor.
  • Increase the height of the Excerpt box when writing a Post.
  • Disable Autosave.
  • Set the Post Per Page on the edit screen.

Reading

  • Set Excerpt length by characters or words.
  • Remove the “Private” and “Protected” title prefixes.
  • Disable RSS Feeds.
  • Add Featured Images to your RSS Feed.

Discussion

  • Do not allow comments on Pages.
  • Remove auto linking in comments.
  • Disable Self Pinging.

Appearance

  • Enhanced Body/Post Classes: Browser detect, Taxonomies (including hierarchy levels), post date, has post thumbnail, author information, logged in users, multisite, odd/even (post archives only), post excerpt.
  • Remove any/all default WordPress widgets.
  • Run any shortcode in a widget.
  • Remove WordPress version, Feed Links, RSD Link, wlwmanifest and relational links for the posts adjacent to the current post, from your theme header.

User Profiles

  • Remove the Admin color scheme option from the User Profiles.
  • Remove AIM, Yahoo IM, Jabber/Google Talk.

Marcus’ Take:
This is another great advancement in the realization that it is no longer just the developer that adds content and accesses a wordpress site. This tool helps to lock down and remove the things that would just confuse the client. They want a site that works and should not be distracted by all the internal functions and meta-news of the WordPress world. This plugin is like a secret boot disk to WordPress, allowing you access to settings that would have required at least 4-6 additional plugins to accomplish collectively.

Marcus Rants:

500 Errors

I was working on a client site and happened to be doing something that I haven’t yet had to do.. Create a new category. I decided to try this addition “in-post” and save some time. A second after I created the category, the whole site went to a 500 error. I refreshed.. Same thing. Switch browsers.. NOTHING. When times like this hit you as a designer or webmaster, its important to remember one important thing. DON’T PANIC! Sometimes WordPress is sensitive, like that old lamp you used to own with the electrical cord that had to be twisted in just the right way in order to get juice. But in this case, it’s a cord for every plugin you have installed!

So when this happens to you, work backwards and work from the root level. Head to your WordPress install via FTP. Rename your plugins folder to plugins-temp. See if that fixes it (it will trick WordPress and remove all active running plugins). If not, rename your .htaccess file (if you have one) to .htaccess-temp and then refresh after 10-15 seconds. Did that fix it? Great! Now rename your plugin folder back to just plain “plugins” and refresh. Still working? OK, then it’s something to do with a particular plugin interacting with your htaccess file.

In my case, this was a redirection plugin. There were existing 301 redirects in the .htaccess as well as a plugin in WordPress trying to 301 the same pages.

So in a nutshell.. 500 error.. reset your htaccess and rename your plugin folder. It’s a good first step to getting to the bottom of a problem.

Bulk Move 0.9

The Lowdown:
I needed a simple way to bulk move lots of posts from an older category to a newer one. The plugin turned out to be a very nice way to bulk move posts to a new category. As a warning once you move them there is no easy way to move them back so make sure you want to move them.

DM Albums 3.1.6

The Lowdown:
I needed a simple but nice looking photo album aside from the built in for wordpress. I needed something easy to use modify and displays nicely. This plugin does the trick. Creating albums is done in your posts page area, you manage them there also. it auto sizes to your display page and is nicely responsive for mobile devices. it places the picture in the center with a film strip along the bottom so navigation to other images is simple and when clicked it opens in a centered window filling the screen again with filmstrip navigation. All in all very nice here. I did run into one issue though and that was a problem with filmstrip appearing in Firefox browser and it simply required a fix to the CSS but it did take me a few to find the issue so dropped a point for extra work.

Developer Mode

http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/developer-mode/

Requires: 3.0 or higher
Compatible up to: 3.4.2
Last Updated: 2012-9-16
Downloads: 78

If you develop WordPress websites for your clients, this is the plugin for you! Developer Mode makes it possible to easily disable certain parts of the admin panel for your clients, while keeping full control over all admin panel functionality for yourself and other developers. For example, you can hide certain menu items for non-developer users and even hide certain plugins from the plugins overview page.

The Developer Mode plugin allows your clients to be presented with a clean WordPress admin interface with only the functionality they need – and nothing more. You don’t want to allow your clients to fiddle with plugins, but you probably don’t want them to mess with your Advanced Custom Fields or Option Tree settings either. Let Developer Mode do the dirty work for you, and clean up your client’s admin interface with just a few mouse clicks!

Marcus’ Take: Let’s face it: a big part of the WordPress admin panel is not suited for your clients. Some of your clients might not know enough about WordPress to have as many options as you as a developer need, and some parts of your website are just not meant to be tampered with by them. This is where the Developer Mode plugin steps in: it allows you to disable certain parts of the admin functionality in the admin panel, such as updating plugins, viewing menu items and disabling specific plugins.

Vimeo Channel Gallery

http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/vimeo-channel-gallery/

Requires: 2.8 or higher
Compatible up to: 3.4.2
Last Updated: 2012-9-16
Downloads: 113

Show a Vimeo video and a gallery of thumbnails for a Vimeo user channel. Vimeo Channel Gallery is a fork of YouTube Channel Gallery.

Features:

  • Display latest thumbnail videos from Vimeo user channel.
  • When you click on one of the thumbnails the video plays at the top.
  • This plugin uses the Vimeo IFrame player API that allows Vimeo to serve an HTML5 player rather than a Flash player for mobile devices that do not support Flash.
  • You can choose to use this plugin as a widget or as a shortcode.
  • You can use multiple instances of the plugin on the same page.

Marcus’ Take: Naturally I’ve been looking for ways to propagate my new video project across multiple networks. Vimeo is a great network that is getting a lot of traction for high quality video hosting. This plugin has tested nicely thus far and might be the winner over youtube as my platform of choice. This plugin provided a lot of different options and could be a great addition to a client site that requires a lot of video elements to be presented without having to constantly embed new posts manually. The automation was fast and effective.

Editorial support, very fast user interface to manually select and publish RSS streams to your WordPress site/blog.

Marcus’ Take: Though devoid of a proper description in the repository, this plugin will take the RSS feed from other sources and sites and post them as a draft on your wordpress installation. As a draft, you have the opportunity to edit and rewrite the posts as you see fit. I am using this to feed in WordPress related news to my new plugin site from about 20 different sources. After a healthy setup process, it worked like a charm. Even assigning custom post types and tags to specific feeds that I had indicated as such.

John’s & Marcus Rant:

I’m excited I have been asked to be a guest blogger on two great websites one for the Social Media camp site here in Victoria http://socialmediacamp.ca/ My first poste goes up there on the 21st or thera bouts and the second is to be at DIY WP Blog at http://diywpblog.com/ my first post there will be in a few days.. Plus I will be having a few guest bloggers coming to my website soon and if you would like to be one in the future simply drop me a line.

I really need to find a way to simply eliminate sleep from my schedule so I can get more done, you know with family life and work and hobbies it seems sleep just gets in the way. ( I am really feeling the need this past week to kill virtual monsters and demons in either WarCraft or Diablo3)

On the fun side of life I went to the Great Canadian Beer fest this past weekend one of the premier beer festivals in the west. We had some great microbreweries here from all over including some for the down south The best beer I tasted there was from Dead Frog Brewery called Pepper Lime Beer.. (now this was probably the last hot weekend of the year here but I am glad cause now my computer won’t need ice to keep running)

WordPress PopUp 4.3.2

The Lowdown:
This is by far the best popup plugin I have used so far, it is easy to get setup and uses custom posts types for its content so you get to add anything you want the same as any other post, this includes their use of shortcodes. It has several rules you can apply like specific pages only, if they arrive from someplace special, how many times have they seen it and more.

Worpit WordPress Site manager

This is a site manager software reasonably priced but since I was only testing I thought i would try for the 3 site trial by sending out the tweet. tweet went out but i did not get the additional 2 sites added to my account automatically..(well I was wrong here it took about 8 min for the additional sites to show up after the tweet) I did run into a couple of conflicting statements. If I had installed the plugin fist and signed up I should have been eligible for 3 websites according to the info in the plugin this from the plugin.
Worpit is completely free when you want to admin up to 3 WordPress websites on a 30 day test after that it drops back to one site – Sign Up for a Worpit WordPress admin account here.

Worpit Features [full details]

  • Manage all your WordPress sites in 1 place
  • One-click Updates for WordPress.org Plugins, Themes and WordPress Core
  • One-Click login to admin each WordPress website
  • Price Lock – the price you pay now, you always pay.
  • Fully Automated WordPress Installer Tool!
  • Complete Worpit Dashboard Access – no standard/pro/business tiers
  • Quality Premium WordPress addons only available inside Worpit (coming soon!)
  • Access to all future Worpit Dashboard updates!
  • Smooth scaling based on your needs

It seems though that since I went to their site first I am only allowed on site.. This should be consistent I think choose one or the other. I think it goes like this, if I sign up thought the plugin Woohoo I get a deal but if I sign up from the website then see the plugin I feel thats a rip. (again the authors corrected this oversight it seems that they had missed this when they made a switch in how they were making their offer)

I do like the update all plugins but did find it a bit confusing when it showed the main page and listed all plugins and the ones needing updating with an orange button labeled focus..( again they are reconsidering this labeling to find something more usable) This label did not make any sense to me so I pushed it and it switched to where it would allow to to update all plugins at once… I think it would be better labeled update all or manage all.. One thing I found here though was when I went into “focus” (should be manage all) I saw two boxes one where you can manage them by plugin name and one where you can manage them bit site name.. Only on the manage by site name can you select all. They may want to consider a select all button on the manage by plugin name. It did do a nice job of updating the plugins and since this site required 9 to be updated it was a pretty good test. they all updated and site did not break.

The next test was the cleanup which is why this was brought to my attention. This site required some pretty good clean up lots of spam comments unapproved junk and a database that needed optimized. I ran the optimize checker before running the cleanup just to see and it did show expected issues there. So I ran the clean up with the optimizer and then started this paragraph. Turns out it had it all done before I finished this paragraph very nice

It has a great future feature that will allow complete site backups but unfortunately the one site I choose to test this on was on a server without everything needed for this system. This looks to be one great feature and will love to test it when it arrives. Although it seems I won’t be able to since all my servers are missing SVN and one does not allow sql dump

Well when my additional sites arrived I decided to test two other wordpress sites on two different servers. I was able to see how it shows you overlaps in required updates and it started to make a bit more sense in its use as I worked through each item. It was nice to be able to update more than one site with just a couple of clicks but as I am fully aware make sure you visit the sites briefly after updates to make sure all went well. Because it does happen that plugins break sites.

Aside from the minor issues when I started using it and the misunderstanding about the extra site all is pretty nice on this site manager. I do think that they should make notice that if you send out the tweet that it will be a few minutes before the additional domains become available. and they should fix the conflicting info. ( Note the authors did solve this from the time I tested it and the time of this release)

Sharebar 1.2.4

The LowDown:
This plugin turns out to be a pretty nice way of encouraging folks to share your content. Since the bar floats down the page as they scroll it is always there just to the left ready for when they want to share.

Pressbox

http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/pressbox/

Integrates DropBox with your blog allowing you to post images and files directly from your DropBox. Requires PHP 5.2 and cURL.

The Pressbox plugin adds a new tab to the Media Upload screen that allows you to insert images and files from Dropbox into your posts. Additionally, the plugin provides a new shortcode that lets you add links or display images anywhere you want on your blog.

Plugin Author: Les Harris

Marcus’ Take: This solved a TON of time-wasting during uploads of multiple sites. It works directly in the Media Center, allowing you to access the latest of your images across all of your websites.

Gravity Forms PDF Extended

http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/gravity-forms-pdf-extended/

Gravity Forms PDF Extended allows you to save/view/download a PDF from the front- and back-end, and automate PDF creation on form submission.

Features

  • Save PDF File on user submission of a Gravity Form so it can be attached to a notification
  • Customise the PDF template without affecting the core Gravity Form Plugin
  • Create multiple PDF templates
  • View and download a PDF via the administrator interface
  • Simple function to output PDF via template / plugin

Marcus’ Take:
I used this for a restaurant client that wanted to have the ability to take orders via their web site. By utilizing the “send pdf upon form completion” it let me email the form results as a PDF to the network enabled printer in the restaurant’s kitchen. The printer was already being used as a fax, and because it was network enabled, it had it’s own email address and printed out the PDF attachment on receipt. This solved many things, as I was able to transform the mobile order page to be nothing but a Gravity form. The PDF sent was identical to their “fax in” form, with the exception of all the fields being typewritten. Great solution to a problem that integrated seamlessly to the client’s needs.

  • Select which areas of the site to show the popup (eg front page, posts, pages)
  • Select cookie lifetime
  • Works in all major browsers – IE7, IE8, IE9, Safari, Firefox, Chrome
  • Free popup templates available for download

Marcus’ Take:
I needed something to use for a site that wasn’t quite ready for prime time. This let me Get the word out that things were still under construction while still being able to get them on the “launch” email list. Good solution that has a lot of possibilities.
