WP-Font-Resizer 0.1

The Lowdown:

Well as we all know at least those of us getting older that sometime font sizes matter and it would be nice to simply enlarge them if only temporarily. Well that is exactly what this one does in a simple way. Just install activate and it places a plus-minus button lower left of your page which people can adjust the font size for your site. It simply work but I think it would be nice to determine where it goes.

An Enhanced UI for Post management 0.2

The Lowdown:

I was looking for an easy way to srt posts in particular I was asked about a way to sort posts by recent edits and discovered this great one for doing some advanced sorting of your posts. It make doing the search easier and allow combining a couple of filters to find what you want.

This has so much potential for organizing your content in your admin listings. you can add several columns to view and if you get the addon which is 25 euros you can even sort them. This is a great plugin for adding those columns and if you would like some info on customizing it yourself see this post. http://wordpress.org/support/topic/sort-admin-editphp-post-list-by-modified-instead-of-published?replies=4

Automatic Post Date Filler
Requires: 3.0 or higher

Compatible up to: 3.6

Last Updated: 2013-7-16

Automatic Post Date Filler has a lot of intriguing uses, especially for someone like me who adds scheduled content to over 70 different WordPress installs on a monthly basis. The plugin works by setting a custom date and time for scheduled posts. Sort of like a smart playlist, it uses variables like “Current Date + X days” or “Time from the Furthest Scheduled Post + X Minutes” to determine how you would like the system to automatically schedule your next post. This is a fantastic “on deck” model to handle scheduled posts, making sure that all posts are as evenly spaced out as possible when published. It’s also great to prevent a mass post dump from happening all at once by automatically applying the scheduling limitation rules. It also provides an alternative button in your post editor, “Publish Immediately” which will override the scheduling filters and publish without any time alterations.

WP HashGrid

Compatible up to: 3.5.3-alpha

Last Updated: 2013-7-16

Downloads: 67

WP Hashgrid is a pure design and developer tool that acts as a grid overlay to your WordPress site. Implementing the hashgrid.js script to overlay a CSS-customizable grid, this plugin helps to keep things centered and in alignment. In the old days I used to print a grid on clear transparency sheets and tape them to the monitor for modifying and finalizing layouts. My, how far we’ve come! This is a good plugin to do either a full build from the ground up or simply to do an occasional spot check of your designs before launch.

Better User Profile Fields

Requires: 3.0.1 or higher

Compatible up to: 3.5.2

Last Updated: 2013-7-16

Downloads: 55

Better User Profile Fields is something that incorporates a multitude of Social networking profiles into the standard WordPress user profile including Facebook, Twitter, Google+, Deviant Art and Tumblr. It can also use this data to populate different elements of your theme or content as well, simply by inserting PHP. For example, to add the Twitter profile URL of the user you would use get_author_meta(‘twitter’). Anyone who is a regular listener to WordPress Plugins A-Z knows that for years I have been screaming out for better usage of user profiles and the fields that we populate in them. This has all the elements to be a great plugin with a lot of great integration possibilities within themes and widgets. Something that has been lacking in WordPress for quite some time.

Navception 1.0.0

The Lowdown:

I think I may have found something great here. A plugin that allows you to place menus into menus.. The idea here is that there are times when I am creating menus for a website and I have to add the same sub menu to different menus and i have to recreate them several times.. Well with this plugin you simply create it once and then add it as a menu item whenever you need it. It seems to work pretty smoothly and without fail I highly recommend this if you are doing lots of menus.

Fluid Notification Bar 1.1

Foobar Lite Notification Bars 1.1

The lowdown:

This plugin does have a premium version that is real great and highly recommended but for this I will focus on the free version.

You can add any that you want and then you can easily colourize the bar and give it some simple stylings, you can also do a little tweaking to the jquery and even simply stop it for a bit if need be.

Now if you go for the premium version you have even more controls over it such as what page to show it on better colour controls, plus you can have multiple Foobars and they are supposed to be coming out with stats tracking soon for your bars..

CSV to SortTable

Requires: 3.2.1 or higher

Compatible up to: 3.5.2

Last Updated: 2013-7-11

Downloads: 3,553

CSV to SortTable has been recently updated, and it’s turning into the kind of plugin that may have more usage than the developer even intended. The plugin functions by calling an external CSV file from a URL of your choosing and transforms it into a sortable HTML table. It’s simple to do on a per post basis in the form of an easy shortcode, such as [csv src=http://example.com/myfile.csv], showing the direct path to the file. There are other shortcode options as well, like hiding/showing the top or bottom rows, etc. I tested this on a few different CSV files with great success. The tables all looked great right out of the gate with little modification. So how does this plugin work and what can be expanded from it? Well I tried a few scenarios. The first thing that I did was try to make changes to an already uploaded CSV file to see if it would update on the fly. It did. So we know that it updates the file in real-time. This can be good and bad. Good because it always has the newest data. Bad because it’s always trying to download and convert that file on the fly. The load time wasn’t worth abandoning the plugin over, so I tried a few more “hacks” to see if I could expand the range even further. I took the same CSV file and saved it to a local dropbox folder. Then I went to the Dropbox site to get a private link to the csv file. This worked! I imported straight from Dropbox. The one issue I had is that I then went back and made a few changes to the file and re-saved in Dropbox. Even after editing and re-synching the folder, the new revisions did not “take” with the plugin. It could be a cache issue or something on the end of Dropbox, but it’s a good idea for the developer to think about using services like Google Drive and Dropbox to feed the CSV source path. I would love the ability to edit files on the fly and have them self-update into pricing or product tables in near real-time. It’s almost perfect and certainly works well as intended. It would be nice to connect a few more pipes to it though.

LateralPress is an interesting java based design plugin that allows you to display an animated scrolling timeline of content relative to the post date and a custom post type modifier. I found this plugin to be quite visually appealing. However the JavaScript time did take a while to load in the test application that I tried on a staging site. While posts set up for previous posts to be included in this plugin’s display is a tedious process, the results are rather difficult to compete with when it comes to final output. I think this would be an excellent plugin for people who would like to tell a story with their content over an evolutionary period of time. It adds a lot of visual appeal to what would otherwise be a boring about us or bio page on your WordPress installation.

Invoice King Pro

Requires: 3.0.1 or higher

Compatible up to: 3.5.2

Last Updated: 2013-7-16

Downloads: 160

Invoice King Pro helps you to send out invoices and estimates to clients within your WordPress installation. This is especially intriguing to me as I already spend $40 a month on FreshBooks to handle my client invoicing and cost estimates. IKP features different “themes” for each invoice and estimates which vary in look and feel when printed. Custom themes have been pre-configured and are available as add-ons to the plugin for an additional $5 per “theme”. You begin your setup process by adding all of the custom fields that you intend to use in the invoicing process. Once complete, you enter your client contact information into the system and start the billing! When you have an invoice or estimate to send, it emails to your client the PDF document automatically with the pre-defined mail credentials and reply-to that you set up. So if your client replies to the invoice, it goes straight into your inbox. Once payment is made from the client, you can easily mark the invoice paid and fire off a receipt to the client in the same manner. While this seems to be a robust plugin on the surface, there are a lot of opportunities for improvement. A payment gateway or direct link to PayPal with forwarding invoice information would be an outstanding addition. There is still a long way to go to match FreshBooks or similar services, but this is a really great, bold attempt at cracking the glass by using WordPress. How about modding this so we can all install it on our client’s web sites and it invoices it from there? Perhaps add a countdown timer to shutting down the site if the invoice isn’t paid? LOL. I’m kidding, right?

I was contacted about this plugin and asked to give it a check out so here goes..

you can get the plugin at the above link

as easy as every other plugin to install and what does it do for you.. Since I am one of those crazy guys who goes to the instructions usually after I have had a play with it, I did similar here.

installed the plugin, turns out you need to authentic with their service and its pretty painless just enter an email and a password and your authenticated very nice feature to make it so easy.. Then what.. Well make sure you hit the verify in the email sent to you..

Well I guess I was expecting something to happen magically like a button appear or a widget be available for the sidebar but I could not seem to locate it at first.. I did finally figure out it is in the editor window where you can add it to a particular post or page.. The instructions should be a bit more clear on this

I was disappointed however to find that the only way to create an account on their website was though facebook.. I abandoned it at that point since i am not a fan of running my signup stuff though facebook or any other social service. if I cannot use my own email and password i generally pass on accounts these days.

the plugin however looks to provide some nice insights into social feelings for your posts or pages.. Will have to run it for a while to see where it leads.

Admin Block Country 1.0

The lowdown;

This is one I just discovered after a bunch of work on another site recently that was being hammered by certain countries.. You do have to install an additional plugin with this to make it work but it walks you though that very simple process.. Then just pick the countries you wish to block and you have blocked access for those countries to your admin area.. This may lighten the load on your site for attempted hack attempts since a dis-appropriate amount stems from a few countries.

YouTube Analytics Dashboard allows you to view your YouTube video analytic views and statistics right in your WordPress dashboard. This helps to prevent going back and forth to your YouTube account and would also allow you the means to use this for clients. Permitting more data in the dashboard gives your client the reinforcement that their WordPress based domain is a web property and WordPress can be the “transparency conduit” for all other social arms out there, including YouTube. It also allows you to have access restrictions based on user role, so if you only want admins to see the data, it’s completely configurable with just a simple drop down. I love the direction that this plugin is going in and welcome more statistical and analytical based plugins from other developers to follow in the same manner. The more we can use the user dashboard to display external information, the better.

Contact Us Page – Contact People is a very intense plugin by Steve Truman at A3 Revolution Software for displaying the contact information of people or fixed business locations from around the world. It does so with a very intuitive contact “blocks” like feature that is displayed on a grid overlay. Both individuals and departments can be featured as well as overall companies. Google maps are optional add-ins that can be enabled to show the main location and pins of each individual profile location on a map. You have the option to show as little or as much as you’d like in each individual profile. Another nice feature is that the plugin allows for direct e-mail submission from site visitors to each contact profile. It does so without displaying an e-mail address online, helping to prevent spam. It is also mobile optimized and can be design modified from a single column to a five column layout.

WordPress Landing Pages was recently updated and is something that I will be testing again extensively over the next few weeks. A/B testing I should say! This plugin from David Wells and Hudson Atwell. It allows you to create specific offer or call to action pages that are meant to generate leads or sales with one page of marketing material. This plugin helps to aid in the setup in creating landing pages through WordPress with a step by step start procedure. The beauty of this plugin is that it also gives you the ability to A/B test, in other words test one page vs a second page and monitor the results for the best success rate. Being completely integrated is a true blessing, as are some of the other modules that they have available as a paid add-in. They have many free add-ins as well that provide extra enhancements like Gravity Forms integration and Exit Pop-Ups. For my two cents, this is a plugin worth checking out if you are doing any kind of Pay-Per-Click ads on Google and have a WordPress site.

This plugin allows you the ability to create a private storage area for your customers that includes private files, invoices, and even a notification/message option that let’s you send a message one-on-one. As someone who uses heavy-duty project management systems that cost upwards of $400 a month, I can tell you that this plugin has some really good options for those with just a few clients or are on a tight company budget. This could also be good as a pseudo-intranet solution within a company or work groups. Worth checking out if you have the need.

p5 : Plenty of Perishable Passwords for Protected Posts lets the author assign multiple disposable passwords for an individual post, page or custom post type. Passwords can also have the option of an expiration. This is something that I will personally test out with some project sites where I would like to show off landing pages or specialized design templates within a content area of my main site. It could also be used for limited time offers that expire with the page content including a video and lead capture form. No matter what your usage or application would be, this seems like an interesting plugin to try if you need multiple people to view a private password protected content item.

The lowdown:

Ok I was not too sure about this from the description it seemed like some sort of popup so I thought I would give it a test run, well it turned out to be a bit more it has a widget you can create with pre populate info and a box above posts you could place an ad in and it also has a centralized popup you can create so while the name is not very descriptive and the instructions are lacking it looks like it might be useful.

Viper’s Video Quicktags 6.4.5

The Lowdown:

I initially thought it was just a simple easy lazy way to get youtube videos into your posts but it does so much more, in the master setting you can adjust the default size and even some playback colours although that did not seem to work so well on YouTube videos I tested on. Still it was a pretty easy way to insert videos in the posts..

AdSense Click-Fraud Monitoring 1.2

The Lowdown:

Now while I have not been able to fully test this one I did install to see its functionality, it seems to be pretty well done to help you keep from getting banned on google adsense. when can happen and when it does you may never get back into the program as they are heartless and seem like they let the computer answer everything.

JSJ Gallery Slideshow by Jorge Silva-Jetter provides an alternative to the core image gallery functions of WordPress. JSJ substitutes the off-the-rack gallery with a jQuery gallery that’s feature packed with transitions and fades. Full timing options can be adjusted to allow for either smooth or fast transition between images. The best part of the plugin is that it’s retro-active with your current galleries. If you already have existing WordPress galleries in your site, this will transform them to the new style without having to change a single line of code. I like this plugin for those instances where a highly animated presentation is required in a site design. It isn’t hard to implement and the results look quite appealing. Worth investigating further if you want a dynamic way to spice up your existing site galleries with a more dramatic flair.

Disable Author Pages allows you The opportunity to disable the standard ../author URL designation and instead redirect to a dedicated page. This is something that I’ve always thought WordPress lacked when it came to providing attribution to the author. This plugin allows for a completely new page to be created that contains an author’s bio, social networking channels, and even the most recent feed items from a multitude of sources around the Internet. This plugin is a big improvement over the off the rack options provided by your standard WordPress installation.

Show Once as it’s namesake implies, let’s you use a shortcode that shows content only once to a visitor. For example it shows one-time messages to users that requires a “dismiss” or “agreed” button to be hit. It can be used as a new user welcome message for first time site visitors or even as agreements to terms and conditions. You can also incorporate direct post IDs into the shortcode so that pull from your existing post content, such as [ShowOnce post=420] would output post id#420, or [ShowOnce post=33,212,420] would output the contents of posts ids 33, 212 and 420. When you add something like date qualifiers it can display from only certain start points, display until a certain end point, or display between a range of dates. Acknowledgements are assigned as required through the shortcode as well. [ShowOnce post=420 show=dismiss style=2 from=10/11/13 to=12/11/13] Will display contents of ShowOnce custom post id 420 and will not be removed until the user clicks the “dismiss” link that uses custom css style id 2 (which you would have to have created yourself) from the date specified forward, with no end date. Wow, this one does a ton. I am still wrapping my head around all the possibilities that this could conjure up, especially when considering you use other posts for the content. This would allow you to use other shortcodes and layouts to populate the item being shown once. Very clever idea and well worth checking out.

The Lowdown:

Well recently I was asked about auctions for WordPress and since I had not seen anything I stuck it in my mind and well I saw this while perusing new plugins and thought I would check it out.

While it is simple and straightforward it will do if you only have a few things to sell at an auction at this moment there does not seem to be a way to allow others to create auctions. But it is something I think I will be watching as time goes by to see how they improve it and what they will include in a premium version.. Yes I can see that coming.

About the Author Advanced 0.2.3

The Lowdown:

This is a great little widget that allows you to display your author information in a sidebar. There is a couple caveats to it though.. First it will only show on the front page with a minor code edit to the widget file look in their support section for that answer.. next it will only show the author of the current page so if you have multiple authors then it will change it will also only show them if they are a siteadmin seems limiting there but still it does a nice job..

The ‘Delete All Comments’ plugin is built to delete all comments (Approved,Pending) from wordpress database easily.

Marcus’ Take: This was something I needed to do to purge out an old client site, sort of like the Roto-Rooter man with a toilet snake, sometimes you just dont want to get in there, or at least be stuck with a thousand clicks to get the task done. This is a simple click once and nuke it all solution to get rid of all pending and approved comments all in one shot.

Quickly shows the template used for current page, number of queries, and execution time for PHP code.

A fast/small debugger integrated into the WordPress Admin Bar, made for identifying the template used for displaying current page. It was built for fast debugging old projects or other people’s work. It adds some other potentially useful informations in the dropdown list: * the current theme (useful for child themes) * total queries on current page * execution time

Marcus’ Take: This was a nice idea that is actually rather clunky and poorly displayed. I love the data but would rather see this in the posts count screen. I like it just for the aspects of looking at new posts, but that’s about it.

Inline Preview is an intriguing plugin developed by Christopher Finke that places a preview window next to the editor rather than opening a new tab to view your post. I really like this feature a lot. It also has an “auto-update” cycle in which you can continually see a nearly real-time preview of your work as you create it. I see plugins like this continuing to enhance the writing experience of the WordPress editor. It really helps to keep the writing flow going without the distraction of losing post preview tabs among the 20 or so you probably have open at the time.

WCK – Custom Fields and Custom Post Types Creator 1.0.1

The Lowdown:

Well it has come to me again to create a custom post type for a client who needs a page for adding numerous items. While I could have made a simple template for the items it would not have made inputting the data easy, since there are hundreds of items to be inputted. So I thought a custom post type would do the trick and while I could have gone the hard route and simply written the necessary co0de I decided to see if improvements had been made since the last time i tried a plugins for custom posts types..

Well of course they had and even the ones I had used in the past have improved I came across this one which seemed to make it even easier even allowing you to simply create the necessary meta boxes for your custom posts type.

They also have a premium version that will allow you to do some more tweaks like front end publishing and additional options.

Ajax Edit Comments allows users to edit their own comments for a limited time. Administrators can edit all comments on the front-end. Some of the notable features include: setting a time limit on when comments can be edited, users can request that their comments be deleted, the ability to trash and move comments from the front-end comment form, a light box like popup that enables quick and easy comment editing,

Jeffs’ Take: This plugin is awesome and if I had my way, I’d have something like it installed on every WordPress site. By default, most WordPress sites don’t allow anonymous users to edit their comments. This one does, and then some. I’ve used this plugin on WPTavern for a few years and it’s still chugging along. If you choose not to use this plugin, I ask you to at least consider installing something that enables users to edit their own comments.

This plugin displays the most basic of quicktag buttons on your comment forms, using the Quicktag API built into WordPress (as of 3.3).

You can turn these on and off for bbPress or comments on the discussions page. Please note, the plugin defaults to off, so you have to go turn them on. Auto-activating isn’t nice, as it may conflict with other plugins.

Jeffs’ Take:  When my original comment quicktags plugin stopped working, I set out for an alternative and was lucky enough to come across this Basic Comment Quicktags plugin. Using the built in Quicktags API that was added in WordPress 3.3, this enables commenters to be able to use basic text formatting such as blockquotes, italicize, linking, and bold. If you know what you’re doing, you can add more but according to Mika, when she polled her users, these tags were the ones most often used.
