FeedWordPress 2011.1019

  •             Version: 2011.1019
  •             Author: Charles Johnson
  •             Last Updated: 168 days ago
  •             Requires WordPress Version: 3.0 or higher
  •             Compatible up to: 3.2.1
  •             Downloaded: 547,723 times
  •             WordPress.org Plugin Page »
  •             Plugin Homepage »

What They Say:
FeedWordPress is an Atom/RSS aggregator for WordPress. It syndicates content from feeds that you choose into your WordPress weblog; the content it syndicates appears as a series of special posts in your WordPress posts database. If you syndicate several feeds then you can use WordPress’s posts database and templating engine as the back-end of an aggregation (“planet”) website. It was developed, originally, because I needed a more flexible replacement for Planet to use at Feminist Blogs.
FeedWordPress is designed with flexibility, ease of use, and ease of configuration in mind. You’ll need a working installation of WordPress or WordPress MU (version 3.0 or later), and also FTP or SFTP access to your web host. The ability to create cron jobs on your web host is helpful but not required. You don’t need to tweak any plain-text configuration files and you don’t need shell access to your web host to make it work. (Although, I should point out, web hosts that don’t offer shell access are bad web hosts.)

What I Say:
Nice and easy to setup for the most part it does take some time to configure up. What I wanted it for was to bring the facebook timline over to the website in a clean way. The gardest pat was finding the Facebook feed URL, here is a tip on how to get it  http://www.facebook.com/feeds/page.php?format=atom10&id=youorfacebook-page-id-number-not-name
It works pretty well and I like the way it imports the info over.

  •             Downloaded: 173,216 times
  •             WordPress.org Plugin Page »
  •             Plugin Homepage »

What They Say:
This plugin was born because there was a no other real alternative to enable content sparationd and some CMS like functionalities in WordPress. The main goal was, to enhance WordPress’s functionalities, to hide some unwanted categories, from defined parts of the blog.
Today, ACE can override your search results, your RSS feed listing, your category listing, your recent post, and recent post widgets and also your entry page, or even hide whole categories of posts from web crawlers if you want to. This is great, for SEO reasons, for content separation, for grouping information, and handle them as real sub pages.

What I Say:
Although this plugin is ancient by WordPress standards, I thought I would give it a whirl since it had been recommended to me. I found it to be an interesting plugin that will allow you to hide not only catagories from site section but also specific link and blogroll links. It seems to function well with no errors and pretty easy to get going.

WP-Blacklister

http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wp-blacklister/

Plugin tool for assembling lists of IP addresses, emails, and URLs from spam comments.

This plugin creates an admin paged called Blacklist under the Settings menu that contains 3 text boxes which are automatically populated with lists of all the IP addresses, urls, and email addresses of comments marked as spam. This makes it easy to include in your comment moderation/blacklist or to export for other uses.

Calendar_plugin

http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/calendar-plugin/

This plugin integrates google calender api to wordpress admin page.
There are a lot of different calendar options for WordPress, but why not team up with the big G for full functionality? I’ve tried this, and though a bit buggy in connecting and syncing data quickly, this is a great overall plugin for calendar collaboration.

Rating 3 out of 5

Pinterest Plugin

http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/pinterest-plugin/

Show the Pinterest “Pin It” button on top of your images, only when people move their mouse over the image.

This plugin doesn’t display the Pinterest “Pin It” button underneath your blog post like a few other plugins out there. Instead it shows the “Pin It” button on top of the image itself, when your readers move their mouse over the image. This makes it easier for your readers to select exactly which image they want to pin.

The plugin also sends your image alt text to Pinterest as default ‘Description.’
Pinterest sends more traffic than Youtube, Linkedin, Google+, Reddit and other social websites. That is why, if you want to attract traffic from Pinterest, you should install this plugin to your blog.

RP News Ticker 0.7

What They Say:
The plugin creates a shortcode to be used in a widget to display a nice horizontal newsticker which can be placed in a sidebar. Since 0.7: one can use a php tag or shortcode to insert it in the theme template, widgets or posts, all tuning moved to Settings Based upon liScroll.js by Gian Carlo Mingati. Tested in WordPress 3.0+ only, expected to be compatible from 2.6+. Demo: http://chernivtsi.ws (in Ukrainian).

What I Say:
I loved the sample on their site but I was unable to duplicate the sample and the instructions for use are very limited and I simply did not have the time to figure it out so I had to pass on this one..

News-Ticker 2.1.0

What They Say:
A JQuery based News Ticker Displays a sliding or fading list of post titles, rss reeds or comments and excerpts with links to post. Starting from ver.2.0 the ticker can also be used as a featured posts image gallery
You can display:

  • Most Popular Posts over the last x days (via WordPress.com Stats Plugin)
  • Most Commented Posts
  • Recent Posts
  • Recent Comments
  • Specific Posts
  • Number of Posts to display
  • Your default RSS feed, your Comments RSS or even an RSS feed from another site, like Twitter or your favorite news site.

You can set:

  • Category Filter
  • Ticker Length in characters

What I Say:
Unfortunately I had to abandon this one because it was simply not widget ready and I do not have the time to make it that way. It requires you to enter code directly into your template. But it would be great for someone to fork off of since it is pretty complete in many other ways.

And I have a new one for you:
News Tick-O-Matic 0.1

What They Say:
jQuery animated WordPress widget that displays the newest of news in a a silky smooth scrolling news ticker in the sidebar. Full documentation is available to delight and inform. Need help? Check out the excellent, free community support here on WordPress. Need a heaping’ helping’ of help? Premium support is available for at crazy low rates.

What I Say:
This one works pretty great in that all you need to do is install and then add widget and configure it there. The instructions were pretty simple and I had it running in a fem in. If you need just new then you simply create a new category and assign that category to it and you will be in great shape. I like the way it move from one story to the next and I imagine with some creative CSS you can make it great.

I think you’ve heard of WP-Cache or WP Super Cache, they are both top plugins for WordPress, which make your site faster and responsive. Forget about them – with DB Cache Reloaded your site will work much faster and will use less disk space for cached files. Your visitors will always get actual information in sidebars and server CPU loads will be as low as possible.

  • Last Updated: 6 days ago
  • Requires WordPress Version: 2.9.1 or higher
  • Compatible up to: 3.3.1
  • Downloaded: 128 times
  • WordPress.org Plugin Page »

What They Say:
The easy-to-use WordPress plug-in that recycles your blog posts into a monthly newsletter and sends it out automatically, every month!
Easy Automatic Newsletter plug-in does exactly what it is called. Instead of sweating bullets every time it’s time to make a newsletter, all you need to focus on with our plug-in is to keep blogging and tweeting great content. If you can write a blog post every week you will have enough content for your newsletter. If you write more than that, you’ll have a robust newsletter begging the question from recipients “How do you have time to do that?”
Let’s face it, not everyone you already know reads your blog. And in an age where recycling is good, don’t let great content be used for a single audience.

What I Say:
This plugin is great very simple to setup the only tech part is you have to create a proper cron job for it to run a pretty simple thing to do on most hosting providers and if yours does not have that then time to switch.
Formatting for newsletter was clean the only issue I had and I have contacted the author of the plugin for is to be able to shorten the stories posted in the newsletter. Richard contacted me back pretty quick and is working on some changes to the plugin to make it easier to use great response.
Turns out Richard was great and has already updated the plugin between the time I reviewed it last week and today’s show way to go Richard

You can choose the buttons to be displayed such as :

  • Twitter
  • FaceBook
  • LinkedIn
  • Viadeo
  • GoogleBuzz
  • Google+
  • StumbleUpon
  • Pinterest
  • Print

This plugin is under GPL licence.

What I Say:
Well I needed a new plugin for social buttons to replace the one we reviewed many episodes back seems it was having issues loading with the site I was working on so I needed to replace it and this is what I found.
The best part was it also included pinterest since that has become pretty popular it was all great until one issue for some reason it would not display at the top on any pages but worked fine with posts. as I like the design this is a minor issue at this time but still makes it down in it rating.

It adds a menu to the Admin Bar which gives you the ability to disable it on a single page or sitewide for a single browser session.
WP Custom Admin Bar supports Custom Roles.

What I say:

Simple easy and seems to work great for limiting the admin bar to other users..

My Calendar 1.10.12

What Thay Say:
My Calendar provides event management and numerous methods to display your events. The plug-in can support individual site calendars within WordPress Multi-User, or multiple calendars displayed by categories of or locations for events.
Basic Features:

  • Standard calendar grid or list views of events
  • Show events in monthly, weekly, or daily view.
  • Mini-calendar view for compact displays (as widget or as shortcode)
  • Widget to show todays events

and more….

What I Say:
I stumbled on this one by accident and found it to be a great event calendar that is simple. It is pretty easy to setup and works great if you just want to supply event listings and nothing else. Although it does have a payment module I may get to testing it one day.

This plugin is great it not only uploads to Amazon S3 but FTP, Google Storage, Sugar Snyc, MIcrosoft Azure, Rackspace and my Fav Dropbox only there is a limit of 150mg to Dropbox due to their API hopefully they change that in the future..

It not only does the backup but allows you to include or exclude different content such as tables, plugins themes and more. It can also be set to do regular maintenance on your database all in all this is a great plugin..

By using this simple to use plugin your can create a widget with six 125×125 affiliate ads side by side. If the area you place the widget is less than 250px after any padding the widget will display in a single row instead of side by side.

What I Say:
Pretty straight forward in it istall and use just install activte and the upload a couplr 125x images to media and then go to the configuration page and enter url for image and the link they jump to not too bad a simple 125 ad block manager but no stats.

WP Gift Certificate Reloaded Lite:

What They Say:
WP Gift Certificate Reloaded Lite is a plugin which allows you to manage and sell printable gift certificates on your website. You can sell them to your visitors, and accept payments via PayPal. It’s easy, install the plugin and open new feature for your customers!
How the plugin works?
FRONT END
The visitor view part of the plugin consists of simple form where your visitors can purchase gift certificates.
Front end workflow. Let’ imagine that I sell gift certificate for visiting museum, and you are the visitor who purchases the certificate.

  1. You fill up the form and click “Continue” button. Then system asks you to confirm your action. …

What I Say:
Mildly difficult to setup not completely clear on how visitors will access purchase of certs. It turned out to be a freemium version badly crippled that I could not get to function properly, I discovered this only after I hit the website to find out how to create a page or something for people in front end. I have no issue with freemium and in fact I encourage and promote them I do think they need to be more upfront about it though.

It does a great job manually creation of the cert not too sure about the rest may have to buy the premium..

Google Doc Embedder lets you embed several types of files into your WordPress pages using the Google Docs Viewer – allowing inline viewing (and optional downloading) of the following file types, with no Flash or PDF browser plug-ins required:

  • Adobe PDF
  • Microsoft Word (DOC/DOCX)
  • Microsoft PowerPoint (PPT/PPTX)

and more….

What I Say:
Trouble in paradise I could not seem to get this one to work at all….
Rating 1 Dragon

I had to revert to the first one which works with some minor issues but is usable at this moment there does not seem to be a great way to embed a full PowerPoint presentation directly in your site unless you use a service like SlideShare or Prezi.com

Yup old storageThe DropboxPlugin 0.105

What they Say:
The plugin allows browsing downloading and uploading of files to dropbox. Many more features have been added.
To access your dropbox you will need to set up a dropbox app in order to get a consumer key and a secret key.<br/>
1) Go to https://www.dropbox.com/developers/apps
2) Click “Create an App”
3) Add a name and description
4) Copy and paste the two codes in thee corresponding text boxes of the plugin options screen

To display the box use the shortcode: [dropbox]

What I Say:
This plugin works very it does require you to create an API app at drop box but even that is a painless process I found and only took a couple min to accomplish. It works great and if you are in need of a way to have instant file sharing with your website then this is the solution for you. If you do not yet have dropbox then you can sign up for it here http://db.tt/1giOopz its free and I sure can use the extra space when you sign up.

This weeks Bonus New Plugin

FG Joomla to WordPress 1.2.0

What they Say:
This plugin migrates sections, categories, posts, images and medias from Joomla to WordPress.
It has been tested with Joomla 1.5 and WordPress 3.3.1 on huge databases (15 000+ posts)
Major features include:

  • migrates Joomla sections as categories
  • migrates categories as sub-categories
  • migrates Joomla posts
  • uploads all the posts media in WP uploads directories (in option)
  • modifies the post content to keep the media links
  • resizes images according to the sizes defined in WP
  • defines the thumbnail to be the first post image
  • keeps the alt image attribute

What I say:
I used this on a brand new install of WordPress no plugins installed at all or even a theme change yet. It adds a new importer under the import menu. First go clean out all the default junk installed with WordPress i.e., sample post & page and junk plugins like Akisment, hello dolly. Enter proper joomla database info and hit import then go have a smoke then check for any items it did not get and copy them over other than it went very well. I like it much smoother than the other one I used to use..

Newstastic recent posts scroller

http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/newstastic-post-slider/
Author: David Henry
This little widget will display your posts from all or selected categories in a horizontal or vertical format, you can select a few options on what you’d like to show and set the width, height etc. This is a first release and the author welcomes feedback.

Marcus’ Take: This is a great solution for those designers looking for something to put on the bottom widget of the sidebar. This is a stylish plugin that provides a really nice sliding deck of posts.

Plugin Directory Stats

http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/plugin-directory-stats/
This plugin gets plugin’s download count and other stats from WordPress.ORG and allows you to show them on your blog using shortcode.

Marcus’ Take: While it may be a bit too much shop talk, I found this plugin to be a great solution for anyone out there looking to feature plugins on their site. Heck, maybe this one is just good for John and I, but this is one of the die-hards.

WPDBSpringClean
http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wpdbspringclean/

Scans your WordPress system and identifies and deletes unused database tables from uninstalled plugins.

Many plugins do not clean up their database tables after you uninstall them.
What happens most of the time is that the plugin files and folder is deleted but not the corresponding plugin database tables.

This where this plugin comes to the rescue. The WPDBSpringClean plugin identifies unused, WordPress DB tables which have been left over from old plugins you have uninstalled on your site and it then gives you the option of deleting these tables.

Marcus’ Take: Spring is coming, so what better time to do some cleaning of your WordPress site as well. This is a welcome addition to my sites. Once I ran it on one of my old sites, it seemed to have doubled the load speed! Check it out on your sites and see how it works for you!

Image Pro – Image resizing and media management done right 0.15

What they say:

First thing first: A video is worth 1000 words. Check out (2 minutes): http://www.mihaivalentin.com/image-pro-wordpress-image-management/

Goal of this plugin: Simplify the WordPress upload and image insert process as much as possible.

Using ImagePro, you can:

  • upload of multiple files directly from your desktop
  • perform smooth image resize (a perfect resize is created based on your resized picture in the editor)
  • easily manage the media collection (search, filter by file type)
  • drag and drop any image to the post and have it resized the way you want

What I say:

I was in need of a plugin to manage image upload size after the fact and in particular control the featured image size sine the slider I was using depended on that. This plugin made it easy to manage the image sizes and it also has a great little feature where it shows you all available images in you media library and you can scroll though them and then simply drag and drop them into your posts.

Rating 5 Dragons

MmmmmmmmmGenesis Featured Images

What they say:

Genesis Featured Images creates a option box to enable a default image for post thumbnails and/or featured images and a meta box to set a custom size for the featured image to be displayed. These default images will only appear any time a post, page or any custom post type does not have a featured image, or an image inside the post. So for those who write a lot of posts and want one image for the majority of your posts, this plugin works perfectly! Genesis Featured Images filters genesis_get_image() so anywhere you utilize genesis_get_image(), this plugin will provide a fallback option. Genesis Featured Images uses the WordPress Image Uploader and Library to upload the image to ensure that the proper thumbnails are created.

IMPORTANT: You must have Genesis 1.8 installed. Click here to purchase Genesis

What I say:

This is another great little simple image plugin. I need something to set a default featured image on a site I was setting up that had lots of back content but no featured image on many posts. This allows you to set a default image for just such an event. It also has a setting in the post area that allows you to specify the default featured image site on that post a great then when using something like the slider plugin.

Publish Posts Without Signup 0.1

What they say:

Plugin to allow guests of your blog create posts without signup or sign in. You have some options as: set how many posts can be created per ID daily, default user and category to create new posts, etc.

To start showing the form you must use the chartag [publish_posts_without_signup], put it right on the place you want the form appears.

What I say:

A great simple little plugin to allow letting your guest put content up for you. It has a moderation feature to prevent it from being posted automatically. Not sure yet how the spammers will deal with it but I will know in a couple of days.

Dynamic Registration Links

http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/dynamic-registration-links/
Automatically changes your WordPress site content links for unregistered users by dynamically changing the link target.

As an example this can be used for a download link – forcing site users to register and login on your site to download the file. This is highly beneficial for SEO purposes as you do not need to block entire site pages from unregistered users, just the link is altered – which allows search engines to still index your pages.

This is done dynamically through Javascript which picks up a specific class placed on any link on your site, add the class=”authenticatelink” on any link in content text in a widget, post, page, excerpt or even in your site comments. These links will now force login if user is not logged in, if a user is logged in the link will remain with its original link address.

Marcus’ Take:

Great plugin for anyone with a member site trying to keep the SEO juice, yet limit access to particular content.

All Authors Page

http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/all-author-page/
A effective, simple and easy way to show all your staff, content writers, experts, contributors etc. in one easy place for your customers

Need a simple page for the Authors and Contributors to your site? Tired of constantly updating and tweaking links to social media sites? Want to show of the experienced and amazing people on your staff?
This plugin adds a page called All Authors Page to your site and automagically adds every one with the selected roles to the page. Now there is a simple and easy way to show all your staff, content writers, experts, contributors etc. in one easy place. With easily inter-changeable role selection, automatic Gravatar pictures for any of your staff subscribed to Gravatar, and effortless & good looking social media buttons, it’s simply too accessible not to have it!

Marcus’ Take:

I’ve been looking for something like this for an online version of a magazine that I had developed for a client. This one is a great use of the “end credits” type functionality to give credit to your authors.

Ultimate Maintenance Mode

http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/ultimate-maintenance-mode/
The Ultimate Maintenance Mode plugin displays a screenshot of your website with an overlayed window and the reason your site is down.

Features:

  • Works with any WordPress theme
  • Allows you to work on your site while non logged in visitors see the Maintenance Mode page
  • Automatically Creates a Screenshot of your Website
  • Custom Message
  • Returns a 503 http status header so search engines know your site is down.
  • Simple and Easy to Use
  • Multisite Support
  • Translation Ready – i18n Support

Marcus’ Take:

Excellent improvement on the white screen of death that we all to often see in WordPress while upgrading or performing theme maintenance. This adds both style and functionality to the fray. Long overdue and a welcome plugin addition to all of my sites.

John’s & Marcus Rant: What to rant about?

Correction from last show, seems I misspoke on the P3 plugin when I said it had a setup issue, I must have been thinking of another plugin. I still stand by the 3 rating due to length of time running and when I went back to double check my work it actually crashed my site.  It does still give nice stats when it finally quits running.

Wow just realized that there are now over 18k+ plugins and when I started this show there was only just over 10k so I thought I would start something just for fun and include at least on plugin from the new batch at the WordPress Codex

404 Redirected 1.2

What they say:
404 Redirected allows WordPress admins to have control over their dead links and redirects from inside the admin panel. 404 Redirected records all URLs that users have visited and allows the admin to easily create 301 and 302 redirects to valid pages on their site. Redirects can also be created based on the best possible match for the URL the visitor was most likely trying to reach.
Features:

  • Get list of 404 URLs as they happen inside the admin panel
  • Easily redirect 404 URLs to existing pages or choose to ignore the 404 error
  • Provides the ability to automatically create redirects based on the URL the visitor was most likely trying to visit
  • Provide visitors with a list of suggested pages on the 404 page when a automatic redirect can not be made
  • Ability to suggest tag and category pages

What I have to say about it:
Recently updated of course the fly-out menus still driving me nuts and had to do a search though several to fin the setting for this plugin located under the setting tab.
It is pretty simple but time consuming for many reasons. While it does have a pretty good automated redirect it misses many and you have to pop in and manually redirect many link but it will probably be worth it in the long run. Also discovered something else that is removes any redirects not used.

We stand on guard for theeImage Store 3.0.1

What they say:

This plugin was created because there was a need in the WorPress community to have an images store that did not required the installation of multiple plugins. Enjoy!! and please support the plugin. :@)

The plugin fully integrated with the WordPress database it only creates a post_expire column on the posts table. so you will not find extra tables on your database(Cool!.. at least for me I hate extra tables).

What I Say:

Ok I had this great idea well one of many, if only I could clone myself I think I would own the world. Anyway the idea was to start sharing my work on the creation of differing headers and start to give them away. So I went looking for an easy way to accomplish this task.

This plugin offers so much promise but only delivers part of the promise about ¾ I would guess. The setup involves creating galleries and albums for your images then adding your images that is the easy part and the promise of ease. It can be run either as a store where folks pay to download or as a catalogue where they can see the images and favorite them. The problems I ran into was getting the images to display proper in the lightbox and figguring out how to download the images or offer them for download.

What I did see what this is great if you are not offering digital downloads but a wasy for folks to buy prints. It has the ability to create packages of difering types but I was looking for a way to manage my digital downloads, maybe after this matures it will work fine. I have left notes in thier form but have not seen answers yet.

Commission Junction Link Shortcode
http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/commission-junction-link-shortcode/

Description: This plugin allows you to customize and insert text links from the Commission Junction affiliate program into a post or page using a simple shortcode. This prevents the WordPress WYSIWYG editor from messing up the links and simplifies your HTML code. Inserting the shortcode [cj] with the parameters below will output the proper link HTML code in your published post or page.

Marcus’ Take: If you’ve ever put links in your WP installation for the sake of generating affiliate sales, this little plugin comes in handy. It will allow you to embed the links within a [cj] shortcode. Often wordpress has difficulty disseminating the link structure out of CJ, thus this plugin was born to solve a common problem within CJ.com links.

Darkroom Facebook Photo Gallery
http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/darkroom-facebook-photo-gallery/
Description: Why uploading your photos to both facebook and WordPress? With this plugin you can keep them where your friends are already liking them, and displaying them in your website with the best interface neither facebook or WordPress offer. Facebook Darkroom Photo Gallery is a fully animated jQuery photo gallery, inially styled as a darkroom photo drying line, with clothe pins and gravity-hung photos. Each photo features title, SEO keywords and description, as well as album titles and cool effects! Upload them from your mobile to Facbook as usual, and they will show in your WordPress (automated update using cron script).
See features below for a description of the level of customization that enables you to change this “Darkroom” concept/style into your own. This plugin is based on the Fotobook plugin by Aaron Harp and Chris Wright, and was possible thanks to the jQuery tutorial by Manoela Ilic.

Darkroom Features:

  • Option to hang the photos from different corners
  • Option to rotate the photos a fixed amount or using its gravity
  • Option to add random rotation to the photos
  • Option to change the color of overlay, hanging the photos from different corners, using your own clips, pins, or other image and adjust the point of grip, as well as the center of rotation/hanging-point of the photos, using their own gravity or a fixed rotation, and more.

Future features

*Better Internet Explorer compatibility (current version works better in modern browsers, e.g. Chrome, Firefox, Safari)

Options for sale

  • Fullscreen option (takes over the browser’s window making the effect cooler and animations smoother.
  • In-dashboard css, background, and pin photo editors so you can make your own theme with hanging photos!

Fotobook Features (from Fotobook Plugin)

  • Interfaces with Facebook’s API
  • Displays photo albums on a WordPress page
  • Import photos from mulitple Facebook accounts
  • Sidebar widgets for displaying random or recent photos & albums
  • Creates an album of photos that the user’s tagged in
  • Insert individual photos into posts/pages
  • Easy-to-use Ajax album management panel
  • Frontend validates as XHTML 1.0 Strict

Marcus’ Take: This is a pretty brainless way to get your images from Facebook into your wordpress blog. We’re all about lazy plugins, and this is a pretty cool one that you should absolutely check into if you are an avid Facebook photo poster.

What they Say:
This plugin creates a profile of your WordPress site’s plugins’ performance by measuring their impact on your site’s load time.  Often times, WordPress sites load slowly because of poorly configured plugins or because there are so many of them. By using the P3 plugin, you can narrow down anything causing slowness on your site.

What we say:
It can take a few for the scan to run so just go get another beer and you’ll be fine. This give some ver nice information on what is or may be causing an issue on your site. I ran it on mine and discovered a plugin that was running slow and slowing down the site turned it off since it was not essential to improve loading time.

What they say:
The Lazy Widget Loader plugin provides lazy loading for widgets to improve page loading. Use it on slow widgets, especially those where external data is loaded, like widgets from Facebook, Twitter, AdSense, …
What this plugin basically does is to postpone loading the content of those widgets you choose, so that their content is loaded after the main content of the page that is displayed.
You can choose which widgets should be loaded like that, by default the plugin does not “impose” itself on any widget. You may also choose to display a throbber while the content of a widget is loaded.

What we say:
Simple install no setting except a box to remove data if you deactivate it.
Then simply go to the widgets in question and apply the plugin.
I tried this plugin on my own site in the hopes I could improve an issue I have been having with extended virtual memory use and excessive resource use. Seems to have improved it a bit..

The Guardian Watches over all.WP Lead Management
http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wp-effective-lead-management/

WP Lead Management turns your WordPress into a fully operational Lead Management CRM and requires no setup.

WP Effective Lead Management system is a lead Management solution for WordPress websites to manage the leads or contact us Emails. This is kind of very tiny CRM for a sales person who follows up with leads. This best fits of someone who is looking for simple and effective solution. If you are small company with few sales guys, this works better, Doing a complete integration of other complex software to handle the leads is a overkill sometime.
Features of WP Effective Lead Management system:

  1. Displays a lead form in the site and administrator.
  2. All the administrators of the website can view the new leads. and they can pick and unpick the leads.
  3. The administrator who picks the lead can view the requirements of that lead but others can’t view it and also he is having an option to delete that particular lead but others cannot.
  4. When the client submits a lead a mail is sent to all administrators of the site.
  5. When the administrator picks the lead a status mail is sent to the client.
  6. The administrator who is already picked the lead then is having an option to unpick the lead if once he unpicks that lead is reset back so that others can pick it.
  7. Display leads information in the administrator based on the time and date.
  8. This plug-in provides an easiest way to handle the leads.
  9. Unlimited number of administrators can be added. 10.The form includes an simple javascript validation.

Marcus’ Take: This is a lead management system with too much back end involvement into wordpress. Most sales guys won’t figure out the WordPress interface to the point of getting their lead information. This is good concept but poor execution.

Hide Login
http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/hide-login/

Have a Secure Login Page! Allows you to create custom URLs for user’s login, logout and admin’s login page.

Must Have Plugin For Your Personal WordPress Blog

This plugin allows you to create custom URLs for logging in, logging out, administration and registering for your WordPress blog. Instead of advertising your login url on your homepage, you can create a url of your choice that can be easier to remember than wp-login.php, for example you could set your login url to http://www.myblog.com/login for an easy way to login to your website. You could also enable “Hide Mode” which will prevent users from being able to access ‘wp-login.php’ directly. You can then set your login url to something more cryptic. This won’t secure your website perfectly, but if someone does manage to crack your password, it can make it difficult for them to find where to actually login. This also prevents any bots that are used for malicious intents from accessing your wp-login.php file and attempting to break in.

Marcus’ Take: This is a pretty important function that closes one of the biggest holes in WordPress. WordPress is pretty easy to spot and “money with” on the back end to outsiders. This is just one more way to keep one step ahead. I also like the functionality that allows a custom login page for any secondary users.

Foursquare Venue

Foursquare Venue gives you the ability to display any venue’s latest stats on your WordPress site. Using either the widget or shortcode, you will be able to display:

  • People here now
  • Total check-ins
  • Current mayor (along with their picture and number of check-ins)

Marcus’ Take: This is a really cool plugin for business sites that encourage check-ins. I am working on a restaurant site currently. The site boasts two locations and encourages Foursquare at both. This plugin lets me add both location’s Foursquare info into the site for a live, real-time tally of checkins (both current and total), and the current mayor. This is easy to use and set up, but the layout that is output needs a lot of work. It spreads out and doesn’t always align properly.

Answer the call to greatness

WordCamp Victoria 2012 — Special Episode of WordPress Plugins from A to Z #57

Let the light shineThis is a special episode of the WordPress Plugins from A to Z Podcast, this contains the audio from my presentation at WordCamp Victoria 2012.

In an effort to help folks understand the simplicity of WordPress this presentation is called WordPress 101 and discusses how and what you can use WordPress for and what to look for during all your initial setup of your WordPress install.

While WordPress has its famous 5 minute install it still take a little bit past that to get it completely up and running. So enjoy the presentation and you can view the slides from the presentation here. Unfortunately some of the questions are a bit hard to here but I did try to repeat them to make them clear for the recording.

—–Johns Plugins——-

Comment Plugins:

While there are numerous plugins for enhancing comments I will be focusing here on plugins to manage comments.

Facebook Comments for WordPress 3.1.3

What they say:

This plugin integrates the Facebook commenting system (new, old or both) right into your website. If a reader is logged into Facebook while viewing any comment-enabled page or post, they’ll be able to leave a comment using their Facebook profile.

What we say:

This one necessitate creating a FaceBook app, so if your not real comfortable with the idea of monkeying around best to give this a pass. They do however give some decent instructions on how to create the app so if you can read and follow instructions you might give this a try.

The problem I have with this plugin is the total loss of control of my data, make no mistake comments on your website are part of your data and part of what help search engines index you. If however you like minimal work to maintain your comments this is great for you.

Rating: 2 Dragons – due to work involved in setting it up.

Disqus Comment System 2.70

What they say:

Disqus, pronounced “discuss”, is a service and tool for web comments and discussions. Disqus makes commenting easier and more interactive, while connecting websites and commenters across a thriving discussion community.

The Disqus for WordPress plugin seamlessly integrates using the Disqus API and by syncing with WordPress comments.

What we say:

First you will need to go to http://disqus.com/admin/register/ to create an account for your website if you do not already have one. A bit of a pain but seems pretty easy. Again it take total control away from you on handling your comments, it does give you some ways to moderate the comments but they are pretty much the same as in WordPress.

They would however like you to upgrade your free manager to a paid one that would include things like analytics and theme editor.. My questions is why do this when you can have all the same control directly in WordPress.

Rating: 2 Dragons due to work involved in getting it up and running.

IntenseDebate Comments 2.9.3

What they say:

IntenseDebate Comments enhance and encourage conversation on your blog or website. Custom integration with your WordPress admin panel makes moderation a piece of cake. Comment threading, reply-by-email, user accounts and reputations, comment voting, along with Twitter and friendfeed integrations enrich your readers’ experience and make more of the internet aware of your blog and comments which drives traffic to you!

What we say:

Again you need to sign up for a service.. Not a difficult process but again as far as I can tell you loose control of your data and it is maintained on their site. It does seem to work pretty nice and smooth for the most part.

Rating: 2 dragons due to work involved getting setup

Candy StripesCommentLuv 2.90.9.3

What they say:

This plugin will visit the site of the comment author while they type their comment and retrieve their last blog posts which they can choose to include at the bottom of their comment when they click submit.

It has been found to increase comments and the community spirit for the thousands of blogs that have installed it. With a simple install you will immediately start to find new and interesting blog posts from your own blog and community. You will even be able to build your list/network/community even more by offering your readers the opportunity to register to your site to unlock advanced features of the plugin like being able to choose from any of their 10 last posts when they comment or other features like dofollow links and more.

What we say:

I have actually run this one on my site for a while and found it to be pretty decent. It does not take my comments off my site, what it does do is reward commentators by adding links to their most recent posts from their websites. This one is not too bad to have although I had it turned off for a while while trying to control resource usage of my site.

Rating: 3 Dragons not too difficult to use.

Final thoughts on Commentating Systems:

In my humble opinion here it is never a good idea to relinquish control of your data to a third party. One big reason is you never know what they are going to do with it. I know the argument is that well they have said what their going to do in the Terms of Service, but keep in mind how well companies like Google, FaceBook and other have simply changed the Terms of Service to suite their needs to handle the data. Remember when you agreed to that terms of service you agreed to play the game with their bat, their ball on their field and that they can change the rules anytime they want for what ever reason to help themselves out of a jam or simply to cheat you out of something.

Ok off the soapbox now.. In the end you should simply maintain the built in comment system and enhance it, there are dozens of plugins for that which I will cover in an upcoming episode. There are ways to push your comments to FaceBook and pull back from their without loosing control.

Under the square——Marcus Plugins (Things that “slide”)———-

Sliding Drawer Content Area
http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wordpress-sliding-drawer-content-area/

Description: The WordPress Sliding Drawer Plugin instantly adds a jQuery powered Sliding Drawer content area to your site.

The WordPress Sliding Drawer Content Area plugin greatly increases the screen real estate of your wordpress site. The sliding content area is jQuery powered and can be configured to slide from the top, bottom, left or right. Everything in the plugin from the position, color and handle text is customizable and easy to setup. Once you setup the plugin, you’ll have up to four newly created widget areas that can take any content that a widget area can. A couple of great suggestions for the sliding drawer content area from 61 designs is to using it as a feedback/contact form or as a sliding media gallery for flickr/picasa. The sliding drawer plugin has been tested across all major browsers.

Marcus’ Take: Very cool way to add extra content in the header area. This has a lot of possibilities that I am still exploring but I love what I see so far.

Rating: 4 out of 5

WP-Social Slider
http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wp-social-slider
Description: WP Social Slider plugin will help you display social activities from facebook, twitter, google +1 in a slick sliding panel. Also you can show social share buttons.

Marcus’ Take: Pretty cool way to show what’s going on in your social streams without a lot of site clutter. This can be stylized in the CSS to merge with your own particular theme preferences. Good start to this plugin. Would love to see further integration with G+ and Facebook fan pages as well (Not just individual profiles).

Rating: 4 out of 5

HTML5 Slideshow Presentations
http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/html5-slideshow-presentations/

Description: With this plugin, You’ll be able to create a presentation in no time using WordPress’ familiar built-in toolset, and the best part is, You won’t need to upload to slideshare when you’re done. You’re hosting your own presentations and can share/present them anytime. The presentation template is based on html5slides by Luke Mahé and Marcin Wichary. This plugin was built with CSS3 and HTML5 and is intended to be used on modern browsers.

DEMO: http://j.ustin.co/yZe7Il

Marcus’ Take: This is a pretty amazing new method of showing off a presentation using WordPress. The slideshow type style is something that will become more and more prominent in WordPress as time progresses.
